4. I have seen him live a couple of times over in Paris. Just playing in a quintet doing standards. He knows his way around changes very well, Not just noodling [No fusion licks there] Not a fake book in sight [ Dont see that very often these days in small gigs] I dont think a lot of the videos going around these days do him any justice. He must be doing something right, gets a lot of work. I can not see him doing a day job for a while.. Garry
 5. I have seen this guy, and he can play a bit! Nice chops solo on the second track, 'Raju' from Bassist Hadrien Feraud ... http://www.myspace.com/johnmclaughlinofficial Or his my space site. 10. All i know about this Bass, 3/4 size, From China, I have had it 7 years from new. Issues Neck has at somepoint has started to come away from Body. This has not stopped me using it.... But of course has resulted in higher / heavier action..[ good for me , but not a novice ] A couple of small chips on the body, but nothing major. The neck could be reset by yourself if you know what you are doing. But i would suggest going to a repairer, then you could have a good set up. Not sure the cost of this, but not a major job. This would be a good starter upright, or if you are still finding your way about. £100.00 Can do Paypal. And would have to be picked up... Or maybe i could meet..[ not sure about that yet ] Welcome to try at any time. I am at Canvey Island, Near Benfleet Essex. Garry

 12.
With due respect to my esteemed colleagues who have uploaded transcriptions, the rhythmic structure of the bass line is a 3/2 Latin clave diminished to one bar. So each bar is based on: dotted quaver, dotted quaver, crotchet, quaver, crotchet Then there are embellishments on top of that (rests and extra notes) but that's more down to feeling it at the time, I would argue. I would wait and see what the drummer is up to before adding too much of that. Lincoln Goines and Robby Ameen have put together a great book called "Funkifying the Clave" about the mechanics of afro-cuban rhythms, including how they influence rock and pop. You don't have to work your way through the book to play Valerie tonight but it's a good one to add to the collection and it is very relevant here so I couldn't resist a little plug
Yep that is a great Book and a must...... I have the first edition complete with Cassette tape... My chart reference was to 'OTPJ', and that it was in 4/4. It has a heavy snare back beat on 2 and 4 so being a pop/soul tune was in 4/4. 4 Stick counts at start , but of course that could be read as 'One two.two two' Then making it....................... I think you might be over complicating a p**s easy pop tune , sung by a raving Drug ridden, Gin sodden old looking trout [ who sings great when she is sober.. ] Garry
 13.
Hi Garry, I think you're right there. It does vary a little in places. I was mainly going for the bones of the piece so that Mewsie could get through it for her audition. Not bad for a 30 minute takedown, though
Sorry mate, I was not bone picking... As it happens its good to see people putting up charts...good one! In fact it might be a good idea for a thread... [Like the groove loops thing] Then we could all help each other out.. Might have to change the odd note though... Not sure how you would stand with the copyright thing ? Garry
 14. I think beat two is anticipated with a 16'th note, same as the bass drum pattern. As someone pointed out before... Its the Bo Diddley Rhythm with a few ghosties here and there, And a bit swingey Need to click on pic. Garry
 15. Hangover I have a 3 & half year old lad who wakes up at 7 every morning, Thinking he is sporticus from Lazy town I have no time to think about the day before! Its all about the day ahead Stay positive....! Rock & Roll man.................. Garry
 16. Mark... I think you need to give a bit more info.. What sound card? Is Audacity set right...? Connections...? What are you monitoring through..? 16 bit / 24 bit...? I see you are in Essex as well....where? And you might be a Hammers fan? Garry
 17.
Monk Montgomery started playing electric in 1953, more than seven years before the Jazz Bass was introduced. With Wes, he played a P, plucking with his thumb. Later in his career, he did indeed switch to a J - and it sure sounds like he´s using a pick here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI3lhVYQGXk
Just looked at my original statement..... No where does it state that he used a Jazz bass in 1953.. Just that he played a Jazz bass with a pick. Garry
 18. I have been doing some Rat Pack corporate stuff of late with quite a big band, And doing it on electric does not seem to be a problem with them. Garry
 19.
Easiest way around latency = mixer.
Or an Audio card with direct monitoring. I use an RME card with Cubase sx3 and do not have the problen. Cubase compensates for latency automatically, [VST'S] Or you can input this manually for Audio after doing the latency test. This free utility will calculate your latency. Then you can manually input the offset yourself. http://www.sonicstate.com/news/shownews.cfm?newsid=3196 There is a thread about latency issues on cubase.net http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php...094558f28f363c9 Garry
 20.
If I'm not mistaken Monk was the first to ever record a Jazz record with an electric bass.
I think you might be right, I am sure i have read that somewhere. Thinks me might just go and google that... Garry
 21. Just following on from something Bilbo said in another post. 'PLECTRUM PLAYING' Monk the the brother of Wes Montgomery was a great swing Electric Bassist, Using a pick and his Jazz bass. Any arsed horn player who is only good at blowing himself, who says 'you cant swing on electric' should take a listen to this. [ Bock to Bock ] A bit layed back. But goes into 4's at about 1-40 http://www.last.fm/music/Wes+Montgomery/_/Bock+to+Bock Monk is a bit forgotten nowdays. Garry
 22. Thats Really sad, The best gig i heard him play, Was with Sanborn in the mid 80's at Wembley arena. Marcus miller and Steve Gadd in the Band. And they were just the support act! Garry
 23.
+1. His lines are great fun to play. Ewan Vernal (spelling?) from Deacon Blue - lots of great playing, especially on lesser known tracks Graham Maby with Joe Jackson - especially the live version of "Fools In Love" Winston Blissett - UK session player Steve Pearce - another great sessioner and from the upright jazz world, some great UK players - Paul Morgan, Jeff Clyne and Roy Babbington - all worth investigating. Cheers, Alun
You can add Trevor Barry and Andy Pask to the Uk list. Garry
 24.
Well, they let 'turntablists' in the MU now....
And in the past, a very well known drummer had his dog listed in the MU directory. Thanks for pointing that out. I thought she meant her nephew was a sailor boy. Garry
