whilst trying to sell an amp. I found this whilst searching for something else.... and whilst he is going through all his tricks...he still can apply a few styles with a decent feel. I posted this as it has enough for most people...pickers, fingers, farty stuff. Might be something to provide inspiration ..??? and gets away from hammering away at the one technique which if that isn't your thing, can get pretty boring ....
And what are you trying to post? any clues...? need any help. Yep, agreed that Mr Vega does it all round. Garry

When Norman Watt-Roy needs a dep... who does he call?

I think GP is a great player and top pro, a very funny geezer with some acid wit. Seen his stand up show, its real good fun. Not sure what all the bashing is about. Guy knows what he is doing and there Aint no doubt ,superb in feel & tone and plenty of groove. Garry -
Might as well just start playing like Victor Wooten...no keyboard player could copy that!
Garry
Had this extensively with the first keyboard player in my current band. He was a VERY smart chap, psychiatrist specialising in criminal forensics (think Cracker), and a very capable musician. He was also into mind games and wind-ups and look-at-me-aren't-I-clever posturing. He doubled up on my basslines surreptitiously at rehearsals so that the bass always sounded too loud and really muddy. I kept changing my bass, my rig, my playing style in an effort to solve "my" problem .. it never occurred to me (or anyone else) that another band member might be deliberately sabotaging things. Eventually he got spotted of course. He tried to laugh it off and make out that it was all a great joke. He was out of the band after our next gig. When his replacement came in, I made it very clear on EVERY appropriate occasion who was responsible for supplying bottom end.
Funny how we all see things in a different way. In my business [Music] we see all that as not being a very smart chap, and an incapable Musician. Garry
I look forward to the day when someone plays the bass riff in the middle of You Can Call Me Al live ............ as the second half of it is the first half recording being played backwards is it not? :-) JJ
Yep, but all you do is play the first half as is.... Then again but with the notes in reverse order, last note first etc. Bassist Armand Sabal Lecco did all the touring gigs with PS after the single, and did a great fcuk of job with it. Plenty of him on Da tube. Garry

I've got a session that's way over my head...
I mean four and a half beats in a bar of 4/4, but only in the bass part, not in the other lines! It's an obvious cock up in the part writing. There are a few other things like that too.
To be honest from reading your posts, little thought has gone onto the charts, IE - like you say above and notes out of range, unclear directions etc. Well in my experience that always leads to one thing - All the band charts will be like that, and time will be wasted sorting it all out on the job, And that includes the other Musicians. Oh and dont worry about string players being 'On it' they will be even more confused than you if it is not written out correctly.... You will all be in the same boat, so just enjoy it. Garry -
Autumn Leaves is another one for getting your ears tuned into 2/5/1, and the circle of fifths (or circle of fourths) Garry
Let's hope it was just a case of something getting lost in the translation
If not, he could get himself down to Croydon. There will be plenty of takers there... Garry -
All very interesting, but how is this all a general Bass discussion...? Garry
When will they get the strings to line up with the fret markers?
Yer , not exactly Precision engineering is it? never has been. Thats why Fender put the blocks markers on the Jazz Bass, then it did not matter... I wonder if it comes complete with dead spots. Garry
My question is, having never touched a bass before, where is the best place to start?
Slapping and popping, you will quickly get a gig at the next trade show. Garry
In a similar vein, who played bass on this track? Absolutely fantastic playing, especially in those verses. Great song overall!
Neil Jason i think, although Francisco Centeno did a couple of tracks on that album. Both busy session /TV players at that time. Garry
Fretless with pick from the great man from Spain B
Carles Benavent is just superb. Seen him a couple of times with Paco de Lucía. Beautiful Tone. Garry
I'm never sure in these threads whether we're supposed to suggest reasons why the number of contributors isn't growing exponentially or simply agree that we think it's unfathomable and declare how much we love everybody and everything.
+1 I thought we just +1 every post then hang around peoples profiles and spook them.
Distorted bass/guitar + pounding kicks + dirty dubstep synth = A MIXING NIGHTMARE! I'm struggling to find any headroom in the mix with so much going on at the lower frequencies.
If you are out of headroom, why not bring the channel faders down, and turn the monitors up to the volume you are used to listening to. Give your self plenty to play with before you do all the EQ'ing. You can always get the volume up with the final stereo mix, or the mastering stage [with a mastering expert hopefully ] Garry
One of the high profile, 'pro' players made much the same observation and it the discussion carried on. Either that or I need to up my medication
I am sure if anyone was high profile, they would not be posting here... I see you are on the Essex Riveria, i am over on 'that Island' Now thats a good reason to up the medication Garry
Trouble is, I can't take a bass. How do you guys recommend I keep from getting too rusty? Pop into shops and noodle once in a while? obviously more will need to be done
Go into the Music shops in the States, and slap to your hearts content - they will give you plenty of strong black coffee so you can slap faster. They don't mind, and there is no fear of them calling CSI or the FBI. Garry
just a thought .... Andy Pask
+1 Been a very, very busy session player in this country for ages. And of course co wrote the TV theme tune for 'The Bill' as well as playing Bass on it. Garry
The album is from the 'Groovemasters' series, which is typically just two acoustic guitarists playing off each other so an album of fretless bass and acoustic guitar is a bit of a break for the Groovemasters idea. The rest of the albums aren't so great but the Cullen/Manring one really is awesome. When Michael was actively using Talkbass I used to tell him all the time about how awesome it was!
I never bothered with the rest of that series - more to do with all the arseing about trying to get that one from the states a few years ago... But worth it in the end Garry
Today I was finally able to download his Equilibre album with David Cullen. It's such a simple concept; Cullen all together in the most amazing way.
I love this Album - Cool playing from both, i also like the way the that there is so much groove going on.... with no Drums or Percussion involved. Top stuff. Garry

It's not the 14 year old kid you should worry about in a music shop, he might grow out of it...... It's the grown men with a tash and a beer gut that are attempting it - now thats a problem. Garry
