1. * Neither Leo Fender nor Ted McCarty could play guitar * Jim Marshall started as a drummer * Dobro stands for Dopyera Brothers * Freddie Tavares, who worked with Leo Fender to develop the Strat, played the slide glissando on the Looney Tunes theme * Les Paul invented multi-tracking, but did not invent the solid bodied guitar. He also broadcast under the pseudonym 'Rhubarb Red'. * Rickenbacker produced the first solid-bodied electric guitar but Gibson were the first to sell an electric guitar - it was an archtop with a pick-up. * BB King worked as a DJ * Pete Townshend played bass on Thunderclap Newman's 'Something in the Air' under the pseudonym 'Bijou Drains' * George ' Thunderclap' Newman was a post office telephone engineer. Recently, a mobile phone network (not BT) used 'Something in the Air' for their ad soundtrack * To avoid unwelcome fan attention, Paul McCartney booked into hotels under the pseudonym Paul Ramon. Years later, the Ramones adopted this fake surname for their band-name. * Joey Ramone wrote "The KKK took my baby away" when the notoriously right-wing Johnny Ramone stole his girlfriend * Simon & Garfunkel originally recorded as "Tom and Jerry" * The name Led Zeppelin was coined by Keith Moon * To avoid contractual obligations with Chess, Buddy Guy recorded cuts for a competitor, Delmark, as "Friendly Chap"
 2. Shame it's got so many dings and scratches on it, though. I'd ask for my money back.
 3.
The current team of crack music journalists just aren't cutting it.
Rather than crack, the term usually associated with journalists is coke. The usual reason why changes are implemeted on a rolling basis is that there's less chance of alienating those readers who like the mag as it is; at the same time, you externally promote the new stuff to bring in new bodies. So you add new readers without losing the old ones, thus increasing your circulation. Or they could just be crap. Who knows.
 4.
wondering what other BCers have done to get a decent stack on a budget
Recently mated an Ashdown Mag 210 combo with Hartke 4x10 TP cab (well, times is tight) Sounds OK for £290 for the whole "rig" and more or less moveable. Love 8x10's but a tad impractical unless you've got a mate to help shift it. And a big car. And a forgiving spouse.
 5. "We were poor but we were happy", reflects popular bass guitarist Anthony Jackson, surveying his gold records and sipping a fine Merlot. "My friends - some very well known people in the recording industry - often ask me where it's all going to end". Jackson sighs and stares into the distance. "I don't know. I really don't know".
 6. I don't really see why he bothers to differentiate between flash drives and hard drives. For portable music, as long as the quality is somewhere in the ballpark, who cares? Whole thing seems like an extended "Blimey, guv, this country's going to the dogs, young people today, how am I going to put food on the table, I remember when it were all fields round here." Future as a London cab driver?
 7.
What was CK saying about that? I think he said the plans are for it to all be knocked down and turned into something else. I'd be glad if Wunjo's survived. I was sad to see Music Ground with all the high end amps and effects disappear - even though that was all part of the same monster chain.
Probably a function of my advancing years, but I thought that Music Ground moved into Andy's. As for Wunjos, with their "lovely smiles" and "who are lovely and bend over backwards to make you happy AND don't look bored, taking the time to have a conversation about guitars etc" YMM considerably V. 1. First time I ever went in, the counter-guy bollocked me for mentioning, in convo, that I'd bought an amp off the bay. "People like you will put me out of business" he snarled and promptly blanked me. 2. Some time later, one could see a s/h semi on the wall, maybe an es-135 or a Gretsch with a 2 inch split in the top visible from across the store, priced £1000+ 3. A few months ago, a salesman kept following me round the store even though I told him I'd just like to have a quiet browse of his stock. Which, at the time, mostly comprised over-priced, clapped out tat with a few interesting pieces. Mostly guitars though and not that many basses. Which the sales guy acknowledged. "We're mostly guitars" he said. I find it interesting that our experiences differ so much. But I suppose things have perked up enormously since my last visit.
Am I getting old and cynical or does the Musicground chain of the street seem a bit limited, with nothing in stock, long lead times and a decrease in enthusiasm and product knowledge?
Am I getting old and cynical indeed... Word to the wise: It's also possibly a bit risky publishing unsubstantiated allegations about wunjo's principal competitor's financial position.
 8.
Er... I don't remember saying that ^^
Your memory is not at fault. You didn't say that. That's a weird one... and (no offence intended) while well-meaning, is not entirely helpful to the OP's sale thread.
 9. With a rosewood board - Black With Maple - Tort (Grey)
 10. Change the bridge, add an F logo and you've got a £200 frankenstein. Whoops!

 12. Masquerader might be worth a few bob - £350-ish depending on condition. You might want to check out some Shergold sites, as I recall people looking for these...
 13.
Even the hells angels have that British wannabee factor (didn't one of them have a home-made German helmet, looked covered in bacofoil).
Standard Operational Procedure then and now. Stops 'The Man' from reading your thoughts.
 14.
I'm fine with blues - I did what you said and learned some stock lines and chop and change 'em about. I did a dep gig in front of about 200 people a couple of weeks ago at The Burnley Blues Festival - didn't know the set or what key the songs where in and I was fine / no nerves at all. Last night with jazzy / funky stuff.
Sorry, I must have misunderstood your original post. Silly me, should have noted funk / jazz refs. Not about blues at all... Gets coat.
 15. Nerves - thread here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=28528 Improvising: Blues bass is mostly pattern based, with multiple pattern variations, mostly interchangeable between songs (which is a very good thing). Try spending a week learning some "stock" patterns as if you were learning the bass lines for a song. Then a week practising the patterns in different keys. Later, try lifting bits from one pattern and merge them with bits from another. When you can do that on the fly, you're improvising. Sure, some blues bass players 'compose' lines as they go along; but they've either had previous musical training, or they've been doing it far longer than you. Just a matter of time and practice - sorry if that sounds unfeeling, but it's a pain barrier we all have to go through. And, IMO, blues bass is best played understated and with restraint. For the moment, just play less notes and tell them you've got a minimalist approach
 16. Some would have it that the compressor, and colouration fx like distortion, overdrive, wah etc should go between bass and the amp. While time-based fx, like chorus, flange, phase, reverb and delay go in the loop. But that's just one approach among many and not set in stone...experiment and find out what works for you.
 17. Some good suggestions here. I know some people dislike the feel, but Elixirs have always worked for me. £30-odd quid, but they're giggable for ages. For me, Rotos etc used to give up the sproing after about 3 gigs. Not quite 'zingy' when they go on, but they stay bright for a good long while. Last lot stayed good for about a year, played 1-2 x week for 4 hrs apiece, + sundry home based strumming. Either way, 45-105 should be fine for Eb.
 18.
And am i the only one that's fed up of vintage fenders? Or just fenders? Or just fenders and fender copies? Or just fender related basses? BigRedX, back me up here would ya?
A man who is tired of Fenders is tired of life.
 19.
you've gotta watch this video
(Clears throat). Good luck with your forthcoming album release. Hopes it sells loads. Tell your brother and co-band member I said Hi and welcome to the forum.

Great forum!
Based on your number of posts, so just keep posting. (NB, Off Topic posts don't count). Get involved enough in the forum and, who knows, you could end up as a moderator
 21.
I have an Affinity that plays like a dream, sounds good too.
Sorry; no offence intended. Just played a few and didn't do it for me. Everyone to their taste, etc.
 22.
Did you just get the pack of 3 (that takes me back to my youth ) or did you buy multiple sets? It works out cheaper in multiples and you could always share the costs with other local bassists (cue 'local' quotes ).
Just the pack of 3.... and something for the weekend. Never tried Hartkes, so basically a toe in the water. I'll maybe try some others and start a cheapo string Wiki... and again, ta for the heads-up
 23. You're right - Tele custom with (quite hot) P90's gets a good write-up from most people. There are some very nice Squiers out there. As with the basses, the same sort of conditions apply - dodge the Affinities, even though they're not bad starters; as always, look Squiers over to see if you've got a Friday guitar (electrics, hardware fit). I'd think about factoring the cost of new pick-ups (recommend GFS - cheap and good) - and check out the 'enhanced' guitars - VM's, classic vibes, etc. One point - even the standards sometimes come with quite narrow nut widths - my Tele is only about 40mm, which suits my freakishly short fingers, but YMMV.
 24.
Unfortunately this one had me stumped - maybe revise that to "all things Jap between about 1970 and 1983". I've just been told on RickResource that I can't say " Jap" because it's racist. Apparently. Me? Racist? How very dare they! Bloody Septics. J.
Thanks - I'll revise any future posts to reference you as "expert on all things Nipponese circa 1970 - 1983 and alleged racist". Considering how many Germans Eddie Rickenbacker shot down, I think the RickResource should tread very gently...
