Official SBMM site here
Sorry - that's a trials bike frame Here's what you're after http://www.sterlingbymusicman.com ..and I believe the seller's got it right - the Stingray copy is the Ray 34 - the Sterling copy's the SB14. There must be some sort of a prize for naming a product the "Sterling by Musicman Ray 34" and Sterling by Ernie has just won it. FFS, he's already got a bass named after him, now it's a whole range of Korean tributes.
  2. I've read posts, reviews etc that mention the problem of damaging the pick-up windings if you get a string caught underneath. Someone maybe suggested protecting the windings by wrapping the sides of the pick-up with something maybe like gaffa tape, only less sticky. Sorry - could I be any more vague?
  3. Split the band, tell him what's happened and then reform one week later without him. Shifty? Yes, but saves all that unpleasantness.
  4. Might be worth adding some detail on the pups / hardware etc - some nice stuff IIRC
  5. This site will solve your problem: 1. Stick a 'feeler' ad for the body only in basses for sale - see what people will offer you for it 2. Go to the repairs forum and get some repair prices from the luthiers listed in there and post a thread re: truss rod repairs 3. Stick a feeler in the wanted section for a stingray H/S, a narrow neck warwick (with similar h/s pickups) - see how much people want (poss more than your frankenjazz is worth ) 4. Search both the basses for sale and the miscellaneous forums and see if anyone's got a jazz neck for sale 5. Put the neck in recycling unwanted items forum for free and make some new friends Do all of this and your questions [s]will[/s] may be answered!
  6.
It's more about looks, feel and investment than sound, IMO.
+1 Mind you, all this stuff about modern consistency, best time is now, etc...how come there are plenty of threads here listing MIM and USA issues and decrying Fender's QC? Maybe the golden age lasted for about 3 weeks in the mid-90's...
  7.
Never trusted horses. Females obsession with them unerves me.
But at least horses don't spend their time endlessly banging on about "slapping good, slapping bad". They just eat grass and ponder life. As regards "unnerving female obsession", that's just your penis-envy thing - again.
  8. Maybe not ideal But I suppose it does say Marketplace at the top and AFAIK no rules against trading for profit.
  9.
I think Skankdelvar might be the man to talk to, as he seems to be a Fender man...
Far too kind - others, e.g. Musky, Wateroftyne are the real gurus round here. And I know a lot more about shouting at people in shops than I do about Fenders. But it's disgraceful that any bass should leave a factory in a relatively unplayable condition - or maybe they're more focussed on relic-ing than on delivering product that's fit for purpose. As mentioned on this forum before, Fender QC seems to be notoriously variable, whether Mex or USA. The neck warp issue is (apparently) because they rush to buy in wood that hasn't been seasoned for long enough. Never before heard of self-lowering saddle screws, though. Perhaps it's a new 'Robot' bridge FFS, don't they think that forums take the lid off failings like this? If they had the intelligence and the balls, someone from Fender UK would be watching this site and posting on it. [/rant]
  10. Having checked his other items, I reproduce the following from his strat ad without further comment: "fender STRATOCASTER GUITAR USED BUT GOOD PLAYS GREAT COMING WITH ALL FREE STUFF DVDS NOT BASS . just the FENDER STRATOCASTER AND FREE SHADS DVDS WITH CD BACKING TRACKS IN PHOTOS NICE ACTION AS WELL SORRY NO COLLECTION FROM HERE LOCAL DROP 10 POUND ONLY AROUND CHESTER questions call 01516370974 and thanks vox amp not in deal OR CASE BLACK GUITAR NOT FOR SALE HERE JUST A FENDER STRATocaster AND FREE SHADOWS dVDS AND 6 cds of shads BACKING and free dvds on the pink guitar not pink guitar all for free when you buy this fantastic guitar"
  11.
He has the most awesome slap technique on the planet, so why not show it off once in a while?
I dispute that. My Missus has the most awesome slap technique. Nearly took a tooth out once. As regards the rest of this indignant little rant, here's a life lesson: Not everyone likes the same things and wildly slagging people off for showing insufficient respect to one's heroes makes one look a bit silly. Particularly if the endeavour in question is the fairly trivial ability to master a particular bass guitar style; compared, say, to bringing peace to the Middle East, or finding a cure for cancer.
  12.
IMHE blanket comments like ****** is crap tends to come from younger and inexperienced players it is all a matter of taste. some amps compliment some instruments more then others
...on here, age and experience is no impediment when it comes to talking bollocks.

  14.
I've used a VBA and their new 4x12" a few times at a rehearsal complex (Survival Studios anyone?) and have never been impressed with the sound with any of my basses through it. As pointed out earlier it's totally a horses for courses situation.
Horses for courses indeed - the VBA whose tone I liked and referenced above was at ...er...Survival! We've probably played exactly the same amp
but IMO Marshall's bass amps are a poor effort considering they do so well with their guitar amps
...and that's the truth. At this stage in Marshall's history, what's the point in investing cash in breaking new-ish ground in a sector they've never dominated. And the same goes for Fender...
  15.
I dispute that. It's nothing to do with the speed of sound in the string. If I remember correctly it's to do with the mass of the string/unit length and the force produced by the displacement of the string by plucking, i.e good old Newton's laws of force, mass, and acceleration. Please correct me if I'm wrong (it's been 30 years since my Physics degree).
It's 30 years since my drama degree, but I'm inclined to agree with you. I wasn't aware that sound travelled within the string But clearly tension and mass have a bit to do with how a string sounds and plays.
  16. Never played a DBS 7400 (if my memory serves me) but they get a good rap (as above) and sometimes go for big money. Used a VBA in a rhsal studio for months and it had a very nice tone. Trouble was it was part of an early, bug-ridden production run and kept crapping out like the other 3 the studio had bought. Also ludicrously heavy and about a million valves to replace. As regards the MB's, only used one once and it just sounded like any other budget rig - didn't seem to sound very Marshall-y. Marshall did themselves no favours some years ago - the problems experienced with the VBA's extended to the DSL and TSL guitar heads - IIRC, heat issues causing the boards to bend a bit and cold solder joint problems. Frankly, they've been lucky to get away with their rep even partially intact, particularly if we recall some of the other horrible tranny heads they've inflicted on the bass community. Funny, because the valve-state guitar heads weren't that bad - for the money. I just think it's not a big part of their business and they're not that interested.
  17. Not sure what you mean by 'Gain'? More distorted? More compressed? (I notice you're not running an external compressor in that chain). Louder (or apparently louder)? An ampeg will give a bit of a different tone compared to your mag and may be marginally louder. A sansamp will help to add some different color to your tone. You may also get a different sort of tone by running your ODB3 with more distortion and / or output, your amp input gain lower and your output volume higher. Sometimes, if it's a certain sound you're after, it may be other components in the chain that need changing, such as the bass, the pedals or the cabs.
  18. Fender. Goes domp. Seen everywhere, loved by some, spurned by others. And to those who'd infer I'm one of 'the herd', I say a big 'Moo' to you.
  19. Hang on, I'm havin' a deja vu. You posted about this on May 1 - The original thread was moved to gear porn here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=47906 And it's still a lovely rickenfaker. Cheers
  20. No doubt Mr Wooten's got monster technique and supplies some lovely basslines to songs. However... ... solo bass (and bass solos) do not excite me or bring pleasure into my life.
  21. You lucky man. I have a bad case of N V
  22.
BTW as posted before here, my finger training bass is a Yamaha RBX170 which has the action set 3/4" of the board.
3/4"! By all that's holy!

Hi Huw - welcome to the forum! Yes, folk here pretty friendly, but flame wars can and do erupt occasionally NB - Use of a pick is not prohibited and recent consensus here suggests (1) that whatever works for you is good, and (2) fingers and pick all have their uses, depending on the circumstances. As for the band name, it doesn't matter what you're called - all band names are crap till they get successful. In any case, I've heard worse than 'A Guy Called Guy' - there's an old thread somewhere on here about 'worst name for a band that you've been in' - search it out and enjoy!
  24.
Fender Precision - Proper bass done bad, Played by the herd.
I demand a retraction 50 secs into this video of The Herd, Gary Taylor can quite clearly be seen playing a Jazz.
