I think you've already suggested. Serve the band if you have an "appropriate" axe.
Yep, as I said I'm OK with using a Jazz / Precision, I'm interested in what everyone else would do if put in the same position. I've encountered it before, and have always been a little puzzled by it. As has been said, the punters probably won't care, then again we are talking Progressive Rock Fans here, you never know.........

Hey folks. Whats your opinion on this one? My favourite Bass to gig with is undoubtedly my sonic blue Yamaha Attitude ltd3. Love everything about it. Been told that the Prog band I'm in requires a more 'traditional' looking Bass, a Fender basically. No problem, I have suitable looking Basses I can use, but none of them feel as 'right' to me as the Yamaha. I'm pretty pragmatic about it and will do what's necessary, I'm not the 'main' guy in the band, and I enjoy the music so if the look is that important, then so be it. But what would YOU do?

Billy Sheehan for me. Obviously he's very technically gifted (although if you ask him he says it's all about practice), but he's also brilliant at simply serving the song when required. Not all of his stuff is 'widdly-diddly'. He's also very willing to share his knowledge with anyone, also very approachable and humble. Amazing gear-head too.

Which one is the bass that will end your GAS
After many years on the bass guitar roundabout, I'm very happy with my Road Worn Precision. It's as good as any P I've played in four decades and it didn't cost thousands, which is good insurance against me moving it on... ...just need the matching Road Worn Jazz, now...
Like this you mean?! -
Which one is the bass that will end your GAS

GAS never goes away. It is only ever 'subdued' at best in my experience. The amount of times I've told myself that I'll never need another bass if I get that one! -
Oooof! - if it's your sort of thing. Aria pro II SBR-80: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Aria_SBR.html

Is anybody getting bored of "reliced" instruments?
LewisK1975 replied to prowla's topic in Bass Guitars
Well..multiscale is evolution. Also extended range or extended scale basses.Even compount radius, torzal necks and tapered strings are evolution. Is like telling that all the active electronic basses are fad. The relic doesnt afect sound or playability. Its like trying to make a guitar looking epic. The other exaples i give, afects sound or playability and go the instruments one step forther. Oh!dont forget..relic is more worse than lined fretless..
But, you see, IMHO relic'ing does affect the playability when the neck finish is artificially worn. If you mean the setup is not affected, then yes I agree, but to me the feel of the neck is part of the playability. YMMV! -

Is anybody getting bored of "reliced" instruments?
LewisK1975 replied to prowla's topic in Bass Guitars
Tell you what I'm bored of, repeated comments such as - how can a roadworn bass be described as 'pristine' or 'like new'? It's not just on this thread either, just seen it on a Flea Jazz for sale post. YAWN. We all know what those statements actually mean, i.e., in the same condition as when bought from the shop. -
I'm sure you are a nice bloke, I just like to have a nice new looking bass and try to keep it like that, I'm not anti relic I just don't get them, horses for courses, Im a nice bloke too
I get that, I've got a lovely shiny Yamaha Attitude ltd3 (and a ltd2 actually) which I too try to keep pristine. The main thing for me about the Fender Roadworns I have, which are, like Marc, the sunburst P, the sunburst Jazz and the Flea, is they way the necks feel in the hand. To me they just feel very comfortable and I like to feel as comfortable as possible when I play. The necks on the Yamaha Attitudes I have are also very comfortable to me, some people really hate those too. I enjoy playing the Yamahas and the Fender Roadworns pretty much equally. Like you say, horses for courses. Some folks don't get why they make signature models either, I'm a sucker for them quite frankly if it's a player I really like. Apart from the latest incarnation of the Steve Harris Bass, but that's just because of the WHU badge. Anyway, to the original question 'Is anybody getting bored of reliced instruments?' - In summary I'd say, yes, some people are bored of seeing them. But also, some people like them, are not bored of them and will continue to buy them. And then some people will be offended that someone else has bought them, but some people will be pleased for those people that they've bought an instrument that they like. And some people won't care either way. I think there's room in the world for all of those opinions. *Drops mic* -

Well, I don't think so Pete, but judging by some of the posts here it does seem to offend a few.. -
I thought it was just me, I never got why anyone would buy a relic guitar, whats the point, the only one I can see is that you would want people to think you've been playing for a long time. They look horrible
I think this sums up most of the anti-relic feelings, people seem to be offended by the LOOK and that somehow the user of said guitar is trying to trick you into believing they have a really old guitar. Actually, No we're not. If I'm on a gig and get asked if my Bass is a roadworn/relic job, Yes I'll say. I'm a nice bloke you see. -
Your digging yourself a hole here, lol Aston Martin and Jaguar have in the last couple of years opened their own departments just for this purpose, Mercedes never stopped and have a huge network worldwide covering all models, G Wagons are very popular amongst the stars and wannabes for example built to any spec you can afford. Mini have been offering bolt on bits from the early 60s up to the current models, the MG B and Midget models can be built by the MG workshop as can Lotus elans etc, Jeez look at Morgan, they are basically the Fender Custom Shop but for new Morgan cars.
Haha OK fair enough, I still don't think it's quite the same but I think we've done it to death now! -
Congrats and best of luck for the big day! Got married (for the 2nd time) myself last August and had a great day, I even played 2 sets in the night, one with the band I used to be in, and one with my current band. Top day!
I'm not really on either side here regarding the cars or guitars, for every example I can give a car example which people keep saying its nothing like when trust me it's exactly like. Here's a perfect example, you can buy a heritage shell for a mini or MGB, brand new, people will then paint them with thick cellulose paint and flat it back a bit before fitting the car out with new but period looking parts, you don't want a 2017 lacquered look finish, you want it to look old but good, almost as if to convince on lookers that's it's a genuine old car that's been around the houses, the rally boys will drill holes for extra lights, bonnet clips etc, it's exactly the same as a Limelight bass other than it's a car not a bass
OK, so is it MINI/BMW or MG offering that finished relic mini / MGB for sale in addition to their range of shiny new pristine models? Like Fender do? That is what makes it different IMHO! YMMV! -
They might turn out to be decent quality, but I doubt that those models will turn out to be on many people's wish lists.
And this really is the problem. There will be the odd endorser here and there, but the only model they're really going to sell in spades is the Thunderbird, it's the most recognisable and has been used by a fair few famous names. If it were me, I'd go with that, and making the standard Epiphone Tbird available in more than one colour would be a good start.. Nothing wrong with that IMHO, Fender have been doing it with 2 Bass models since the 60's. Musicman/EB with the Stingray. Sure there have been other Fender Basses and other EBMM Basses, but it's those models that have always been on the production line, regardless of what else might be....

Calling all Rush / music doc fans.....
LewisK1975 replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
It's also all too easy to forget that these 3 guys have basically never done anything for work apart from be in Rush. Peart aside, who according to the film, worked in his dads farm equipment store. Imagine that, from school to retirement, all you did as a 'job' was be in a band with someone you met at school. I doubt very much that any of us would be the same person we are today? -
Hate them, utterly pointless. What is there to discuss. Put paint on, pay to have it taken off again to make it look like something that it will never sound like.
Oh dear me, just when we were getting somewhere with the constructive discussion. -
Wow I had no idea Fender were so much in debt, seems strange considering how popular their products are , literally everyone I know that plays bass or guitar has a Fender, knowing this I am glad that the majority of my bass purchases have been Fender made (basses, strings, straps) , I may not be the biggest spender but it is nice to know that I have supported them in some way however small
Yep, wholeheartedly agree with this. Fender have their haters, and like all manufacturing companies, have had their problems, but I think we'd all be sorry to see them gone.
