1. As has been mentioned a clean boost on one of the basses could level things out. Or you could use a Radial Bass Bone or similar pedals with 2 channels and separate level/gain control. Could also be a Boss LS-2 Line Selector or if you want to also make changes in your rig, the TC RH amps have 3 presets that also recall individual input gain settings.
2. Ah, crap... sold one just like that and still have remorse... I am tempted, but better try hard to look the other way!
3. Usually, 'mu sound' live is quite different from the sound I go for when rehearsing on my own or trying out a new bass or amp in the music store. Most oftenthe ear find a scooped sound pleasant, but in a band mix, you may well need more mids to cut through. You mention you use the Sansamp 100% wet. I think the sansamp is overprocessing at 100% wet, but find it extremely useful and a great tone-shaper when used at more subtle settings. Sometimes I even use it punched in but at 100% neutral setting and it still affects the sound (example of the latter here: http://bass-pedals.com/tech-21-sansamp-bass-driver-di-review/sound-clips-round-5.html ) I would probably try to see if I could integrate the sansamp in my setup but use it with a more sensible blend.
4.
That is a beautiful bass I bet it sounds amazing, have spoken with Carey and Mo and Adrian on the phone a number of times, they are great guys. The build quality on their basses is second to none IMO. I have a Nordy VJ4 that I am thinking of changing to vol/pan.... I think that would make it just perfect!
Yep, thumbs up all the way to Carey and his crew! I guess a V/P setup would be great on your VJ. I think the idea to keep it V/V on mine is to be able to completely isolate the P. You probably wouldn't want that on a J.
5. Congrats!!! That looks absolutely amazing! I have a 64 of my own and still I envy you... ;-)
6. I got this one recently: http://bass-pedals.com/fender-precision-bass/nordy-pj5-active.html I ordered it based on having tried Carey Nordstrand's personal 5-string P and I told him I wanted a bass just like that, but with a J at the bridge as well. When we discussed the preamp layout, he suggested V/V instead of V/B because that was the best possible way to isolate the P pickup entirely, which was the initial starting point for me. So we did that. Whether I'd be able to tell any real differnce had it been a V/B preamp, I don't know... I have another bass that is V/B and totally agree with you with regard to the pratical side of that layout. :-)
7. Yeah, the HOF is great! And extremely versatile too (especially if you also count in the Tonerint editor). I also quite like the Silver Spring Reverb from the Mad Professor, but it's less flexible and really has one type of reverb only (but if you like that particular one, you're all set). You can hear a bit of the silver spring here: http://bass-pedals.com/mad-professor-silver-spring-reverb-review.html
8. If you like the blend (I do too!), you could also take a look at the Wampler EGO. While a visual meter is nice it's a nice-to-have for me. Should you want the meter in a smaller package there is also the MXR M87 that gives you more Ratio choices as well, but no blend... I did a review of the Ego recently, so if you want to hear what it sounds like, you can find it here: http://bass-pedals.com/wampler-ego-compressor-review.html
9. Congrats! I took home a 55-01 and a 55-02 years back to test them. Both were great basses, but I eventually decided to keep the 55-02. But the 55-01 was a great instrument too - enjoy yours! :-)
10. Cancelled my search for a late 60's Tele a few years back but would be tempted should the right one pop up... Also a nice fretless J bass...
11. Love that mint! I may be corny, but that just looks great to me :-)
12. I got the J, the P and the SR and had been looking for a Tele for a year or so before I decided that I probably didn't need it. I am probably very, very wrong...
13. Looks beautiful!!! Love those 70s basses with blocks and bindings. (Got a 72 with black blocks and bindings :-)
14. Yeah, congrats on that one! I have never tried one but it sits very high on my GAS list. Especially interested to learn the (probably subtle) differences in tone between the various transformer versions.
15. Beautiful! Had a 55-02 once - great bass. Swapped the neck for a fretless but it never really became what I hoped for. Should have kept the fretted maple neck on it (or buy this one) ;-)
16. I had the TH for a couple of years but eventually uninstalled it from my board and sold it later on. Can't even remember why anymore. As I rememeber it actually sounded great but I think I just needed some tonal variation at some point. Well, now I want one again! :-/
17. Thanks for the review! Sounds great and that is now definitely on the GAS list. Would also love to try the Cali an Keeleys dedicated bass compressor.
18. Phew. Glad it's not a Telecaster style. Then I'd been in trouble... But looks great! :-)
19.
I don't think Eden will sell a huge number of these... things would be different if it were smaller and 9v powered though, perhaps some market research would have told them that!
I guess time will tell how well they turn out in terms of sales numbers, but I do hear some complaints about the graphics as well as the 15V power issue and size. While I don't have a big issue with the 15V as they include the power supply, I have to mention the size as it really surprised me how small it is compared to what I expected. From the photos I had expected a much bigger pedal. It's probably the landscape-angle design that fooled me into thinking it would be like a Line 6 DL4 or TC Flashback X4, but it's really just a bit bigger than a standard Boss pedal. :-)
20.
What is the image under 'Controls' from?
I actually don't know. It's not a music device but something more 'scientific'. Just thought it represented 'knobs-in-general'. I have received some questions that indicate there might be some confusion. That they thought it was not a generic piece of graphics but the controls from the actual unit under review. I may change that sometime soon :-)
21.
Excellent - thanks for doing this. It's good to see the Squier Jag holding its own amongst such exalted company.
Thanks! And yes the Squier is not bad at all. You can definitely hear a difference, but that is also due to the short scale, I'm sure.
22. So many choices... I have a weakness for ash/maple with 70's spacing. But then again, a classic alder/rosewood with 60's spacing is also amazing.
23.
Great bass there, my 78 is the same - and rather heavy as well
Yes, love those chunky 70's basses too. But I must admit that when listening to all these P basses I don't think the weight has as much of an impact on the tone as I used to think.
24.
That is my favourite of all the sound samples.
it certainly has a more bright sound and presence than the other basses. I must admit, though, that it's not my main P bass anymore. That would be the 3rd 79 - partly due to the sound, but also to the fact it has an A-neck. :-)
