At long last got this produced, the [url="https://flirtwithdanger.bandcamp.com/releases"]Flirt With Danger Mini-album[/url] Mastering was done at Metropolis Studios in London, otherwise everything was done by yours truly in my home studio (including the artwork, which I ended up knocking up myself when the designer fell sick and couldn't complete). It'll be released across all main digital channels on Oct 28th but for now can be bought at Bandcamp, with a 10% discount if you enter the code, prerelease Can't remember which bass I used but none are that recent, so I will have used my Squier VM Jazz. I may have re-recorded some using my Ricky 4003SW.

I use a Gretsch Tennessee Rose... whereas the 6120 is regarded as THE rockabiily guitar, I still prefer my Tenny as it's longer scale and hence more twang down the bottom end.

Awaiting delivery on an AKG D112 for miking my bass combo, I'll post how well it works next week when I have a chance to try it out. I've been DIing my bass until now as my only dynamic, a SM58, doesn't have enough bottom end. A condenser mic, for other purposes, would be a good choice (as every one else says you need phantom power support though).

Just 2, Squier VM Jazz and a Ricky 4003SW, and it's unlikely there'll be any more. I'm a guitarist who can't find any other band members, so I had to learn how to play bass myself (still I love playing bass, although it could be considered as a lower-tuned guitar with fewer strings, it's a very different experience).

OMG that control room is just awesome.

Only thing I've had done to mine (4 string rather than 5) is the series/parallel switch. In series mode it has a sort of J/P hybrid sound, which I prefer on the most notes, while parallel sounds better to me on the high end.

After getting used to a Squier VM I tried a MIM and found it disappointing - no better in terms of feel and the VM's pickups had more bottom end.

How does it sound/feel compared to the real thing?

A friend suggested 'Atlantic Soul', but I can't think of any similar tracks. Then again, I don't really play this kind of music much anyway, the rest of the songs on soundcloud are more rockabilly / garage / punk / alt-country. And before anyone mentions it, yes, I [b]know[/b] I'm a lousy singer.

Last couple of songs have my new Ricky on them, the year before my Squier VM J, and before that various sampled basses played on keyboards.

SM57's have a lot of bottom end roll-off, so surely it wouldn't be much good for recording a bass? Unless you were mixing it in with a DI and just using it to capture the upper harmonics.

As a side note I ordered it on Monday and it arrived on Wednesday - Tuesday was the day the death of one of the most prominent Ric users was announced

Long had a hankering for a Ricky, my Squier J bass is a fine instrument but I just love that Ricky sound. Tried a 4003S out in a shop in Brum and it was fine apart from the fingerboard width at the nut end, made it feel a bit fat, esp being used to a J. Also they only had a mapleglo model in stock, which I really don't like looks-wise - hey if you're paying out that much money you want all the boxes ticked! So I ended up ordering one online. Struggling with the colour choice I ended up going for Walnut as it's the only one they make afaik with a maple neck. When it arrived I was very impressed - it's totally unpainted, just bare wood, which feels great. Also the fingerboard at the nut end was quite a bit narrower than the one I tried in the shop; I don't know if that's the difference between models or just variation between individual instruments. It seems very bright in terms of tone, I'm still experimenting with getting my ideal tone out of it - lot of bottom with a bright attack to cut through the mix. Generally it sounds good out of the amp but when I record it (DI) and play back, it has a rather pinched sound, iykwim. I have a spare set of Status half-wounds which I use on the J and they sound great; anyone tried them on a Ricky?

And so many controls! Love that chickenhead knob that looks too large to turn without it hitting one of the others.

Only the one bass so that one. But in the spirit of the thread, I have 6 electric guitars, and the one I use most is the cheapest, a Squier CV telecaster.

[/quote] Picked up this trick from another board: take some of the gloss off with a nylon scouring pad, then use furniture polish on a duster to buff it up. Repeat a few times and you end up with a real quality ultra-fast neck. Definitely worked for me. Though it's my least expensive electric, my BSB is my real workhorse. I've tried a few teles and none beats it until you get into the £1K+ Fenders, even then the improvements are pretty small given the price difference.

Parallel handles the higher notes better, they're clearer and more articulated but series gives a lot more grunt down the bottom end. The great thing is it's like having 2 basses in the same body Also had Status Hot Wire Half Wounds put on with the mods and I really love the sound, it's so rich throughout the entire range. So a big thankyou for all the advice I've been given.

Had this problem with my Gretsch Tennessee Rose, it was still under warranty and shop's workshop reckoned the problem was the spindle so they replaced the pot.
