  1. I thought my HDD was playing up when they went out of time! And Norman's sound was awful. Plus I was watching a show that was recorded 10 days previous, you'd think a 2nd take was in order?
  2. My trusty NS-94 and a styleised (it's trans blue) pic of my first bass - NS-2000/4 bought new from the Bass Centre in '99. Mid-range Spectors have great build quality and are therefore good platforms for electronics upgrades. Both of these go for less than £200 these days. Also not so long ago I remember the Czech LX series going for £600-700 in the now defunct Sound Control - how did they get so expensive?
  3. Chris Squire's eq on Fish Out Of Water is dreadful, as is the whole sound on Tales From Topographic Oceans. Mush! Fragile was a lovely sound. I suspect he had a lot more control on his own album. Nathan East's bass on Michael Jackson's I Just Can't Stop Loving You is beautiful.
  4. +1 for Dennis Dunaway! And the consummate musician, Mike Rutherford - there aren't many Genesis bass lines you can use twice! And for not being snobby about his machinery (Shergold/Yahama).
  5. My cousin Pete plays a normally strung right-handed P-bass. I only realised he was left handed when I saw him sign something. He said there wasn't any lefties in the shop. Oh and he'd gone out wedged up to buy a washing machine!
  6. Dick's Zon was the two pickup Legacy Elite and was either midnight blue or black so not the example on here. It also had a Hipshot on the E for Kiss Like Judas and a couple of other songs. He switched to a P-bass special years ago and in interview said he still had the Zon knocking around. And the Tall Ships album was rubbish - It Bites lite!

  9. The usual apology if I've duplicated an existing thread. I've been trawling for info about John Deacon's situation lately and I wasn't surprised to find there isn't anything we don't already know; he's retired, he speaks to Roger and Brian occasionally over Queen legacy issues and he chooses to lead amprivate life. Respect to him for that. I wondered if any of his old basses have ever been up for sale?

  11. There were certainly a lot of negative comments made about Calling etc. I personally didn't like it. Rumour has it that Collins either refused to play or learn any songs from it for the '07 tour.
  12. For the record Steve's first three albums after leaving the band were superb, then someone showed him a drum machine and told him he could sing. I think for someone who's making a pile of cash out of another Genesis Revisited album and tour he's being a little ungracious. And I love the way Calling All Stations has been obliterated by the thought police - a piece of work Banks and Rutherford were proud of but never got touched on the 2007 tour. And I had to do a double-take when Wind & Wuthering was skipped.
  13. Great to see Alphonso Johnson get a mention - love his stuff on Black Market and Face Value. Saw Level 42 a couple of years ago and they were brilliant, one of best gigs I've been to (and I've seen Chas & Dave), but the boy King can't resist slapping all over everything. It's a shame because he's a great finger style player, especially the great bass lines on World Machine.
  14. Songs From the Big Chair is brilliant and there's some lovely bass on it. It's also a very well produced album featuring some great keyboard programming. My cousin was their monitor engineer for a couple of tours ages ago and we got into a conversation about bass, neither of us knowing the both played a bit. Curt gave him his Steinberger at the end of the Big Chair tour which he said was gathering dust under his nipper's cot! Bass crime.
  15. If we pandered to peoples tastes we'd all be doing Glen Miller covers and The Beatles wouldn't have happened. It is possible to develop a setlist without being obvious. Conversely, I was at a gig once where a band played two tracks that neither myself nor my friends had heard of and we found by asking afterwards were in fact 'album' tracks. Heinous.
  16. The fathers of prog rock as far as I'm concerned and some absolutely glorious music. The keyboard player helped develop the Mellotron (which I believed ended up in Tony Banks possession).
  17. Firstly, as previously suggested the artists don't give a sh&t so forget that angle. Nothing will change in a society obsessed with market forces and some idiot will pay a thousand pounds for a Kate Bush ticket. And while I'm on her case; shows up after 35 years and plays a bunch of shows at HER convenience in guess where? London!
  18. I have that trouble too. I watch stuff for ages to gauge the price then when I sell it goes for much less. Conspiracy theory anyone?
  19. Mister Kanish. Saw them at a wedding near Chichester April '13. They did three sets of pop covers, no gaps between songs and the dance floor was full the whole time. Brilliant.
  20. McMillen 12 Step and a Moog Minitaur. I also have a Novation Bass Station II which I can trigger using the 12 Step and gives an option to play synth bass lines by hand using the two octave keyboard. I used to use Roland PK-5 pedals and a Roland sound canvas for simple sawtooth sounds. It's worth bearing in mind that as the bass player you've already got enough heavy gear to get to the gig so the 12 Step is a worthwhile option.
  21. Listening to the Led Zep O2 cd, it would seem that studio mix engineers have caught the bug too; kick drum massive, bass pedals massive, bass guitar (above an A-ish) disappears. Also watching Strictly on the telly; bass player using what seems to be an NS upright; anything way down sounds great but again anything else isn't there.
  22. I was setting up with a band once and getting a level using a PK-5 and a basic sawtooth sound from a Roland Sound Canvas. A woman who'd been sat at the back wandered up and asked what was making her seat vibrate. When I told her she said 'can you keep doing it please!' I think rather than compromise the sound of either instrument I'd consider the sub option for the pedals.
  23. Many thanks for the above reply. I'd happily go the sub/mixer route as long as I could drive both instruments through it. And it would be low C stuff so we're talking 33hz.
  24. My first bass was one of these; the deluxe model with gold hardware and 3-band eq. You could get any tone you liked out of that bass and the small body was lovely. If you love the one you have now keep an eye out for one of these.
