Paul, you have to find the right 4001 most of these basses sound good!! there is a tone present in the 4001 you just don't get on a 4003, i have played rics for 38 years the 4003 is a nice bass, but if you want the original kind of Geddy lee and Chris squire tone you will only get that from the 4001. the 4003 is more hit and miss, the one you have is one of the good ones !!!

Just imported a vintage Rickenbacker 4001 bass 1977. took 11 days all in, took a couple of days at customs in uk, i was charged for vat and parcelforce fee no import duty at all.

thanks guys, the cap bypass has been done letting the bridge pickup sound the way it should. it has a long pole toaster in the neck position too. huge sounding bass with lots of ric tone, and very skinny neck.

2 screws, underneath the pickup mount, loosen them slightly, turn the pickup slowly to straighten it, tighten screws job done. Geo

Just took delivery of my first 4001 in 30 years, she was imported from nashville usa, hard to believe this bass is 37 years old !! in almost mint condition, it is stunning to look at and plays wonderfully. it came with the original hard shell case with a blue velvet you just don't see any more. i also own two 4003's, i have to say though the original tone is with the 4001 you just cannot beat it, there is a tone there that is not present on the 4003 !! these are not cheap basses either valued at around £2000.

that is why i stick with the ric bridge solid once set up.

used GAK several times had a couple of problems with boxes arriving badly damaged also had stuff go missing once but dan thomas at gak sorted things out and took care of the problems. so i can recommend them.

Usually once a ric bridge is set up there is never an issue, i have found anyway, i keep my rics all original, once you start changing parts to me it ain't a ric anymore , that is just me, it is a bass once set up is as solid as anything.

I used have a Shergold 12/4 doubleneck, black. heavy but great tone from the bass and 12 string was nice. worth having if you can find one.

Danny, i have had 19. most are average sounding i have had 2 outstanding ones a 99 and the 2007 grayglo also my 2013 jetglo is no slop or my walnut. great basses if you get a stand out one just keep it no matter how much you are offered.

you guys are buying the crap rics , it is as simple as that, get a good one and you wont part with it. you have to seek them out guys.

You have not played the right ric yet stingray pete. there are dogs like every other brand, fender, musicman etc but there are some cracking rics i personally own 3 of them.
