Which it is possible to do (or not do) regardless of whether the song was written by the bloke standing next to you, or (say) Deep Purple. This is why I think that the ongoing covers vs originals debate is pointless.
But it isn't pointless. There are some important (to us musicians, but not relatively) philosophical questions we can ask about the rise of the cover band and tribute bands. Are we really participating in nostalgia at the moment because it makes us feel good in a harsh world? And other fluff like that ..
You've clearly never heard me trying to play Rush's YYZ - I get so much personality in there there's no room for most of the notes...

But there are lots of members of originals bands that are not involved in the music writing of the band.
However the goal is usually to put your own personality into the parts, not someone else's.
Just forced myself to watch it there, Jesus wept, what pure and utter, repetitive garbage. And that frontman looks like he'd score even higher than Johnny Borrell on the complete and utter w***er scale.
Nothing wrong with repetitive, most of the music we listen to is repetitive.

Funny what Scott Thunes said on Facebook about his visit to Denmark Street while he was in London for the 200 Motels extravaganza at the Royal Festival Hall. "I found something odder than overpriced guitars: specialized stores. Acoustic instruments, Gibsons only, Fenders only, DJ stuff only, stomp boxes only, wind instruments only, sheet music only. It was as if somebody owned the entire block of stores and instead of having everything - impossibly - under one roof, they broke up a Super-store into separate doorways. Freaked me out." Someone replied "That's exactly what it is - most people don't realise it's actually now pretty much one outlet set up to mimic a series of independent stores."

What to do when you got mardy neighbours?
Sorry to be a petty pooper but I'm with the complainant on this one. Peace and quiet at home is something I value highly. It really is no effort to use headphones. I had to go and face off my work shy neversweat of a noisy neighbour at 2 in the morning a few days ago - pissed up and rowing with the fat nightmare he lives with. Not being one to mince words he's been quiet as a mouse since. I expect being told by a bloke in a monkey onsie that he's going to tear your head off and sh*t down your neck is a pretty scary thing !
Brilliant! -
Just a have look back at what you've posted... You all sound like my dad complaining about the music I listened to back in the 70s. What a bunchy of grumpy old farts! No wonder rock/pop music is in such bad shape...
I do agree with you, mate. However, having just read a review of them in the Guardian, and watched the Jools performance, I have to say I thought they were very poor. There's little quality, and nothing at all new or interesting. The lyrics are dull and they seem to have landed their major label deal on the strength of their stage antics rather than their music, a cynical short term investment it seems to me. They are one OF a million rather than IN. Can't see any longevity here, they seem meaningless and pointless. f*** knows how they got on Jools. Sheer mediocrity for me.

One night, just one night before Christmas a few years ago, me and lady xilddx were blasting some Deftones on the hifi. We thought the woman upstairs was out and we were on holiday. She rang the bell about 9pm, her lip was bleeding, she looked distressed. She asked us very politely to turn it down as her floor was vibrating. I was immensely apologetic and turned it off. I pointed out her lip and asked if she was ok. She explained she'd been biting it for an hour because she was so worried about asking us to turn it down. That's the sort of distress loud noise can cause a neighbour, even for one night. I still feel guilty about it, but we got on very well, even after that incident. -
I don't think you are being unreasonable, my friend , but I and many others are just trying to make the point that in the real world , it can be more about perception than reality . In the minds of most non-musiciuans , guitar + amp equals loud and annoying , regardless of the actual volume level . What this neighbour is complaining about is not that you are playing too loud , but rather he is complaining about the fact that he can hear you at all . It may well be that this chap is being obnoxious in the manner that he is complaining , but the hard fact is that if it comes down to a dispute that a third party has to get involved in then in all likelihood he will be the winner , not you . The suggestion that you approach this fella in a friendly manner and try to explain your point of view and ask his permission to have some limited playing time which he can veto by knocking on the wall or phoning you if he is too put out by it at any particular time is a very good idea , and probably your best chance of getting what you want . In terms of manipulating this bloke to your own ends , there is a huge psychological difference between being subjected to something you are in control of ( noise from your bass in this instance) and being forced to endure something you have no power to stop.
Absolutely spot on. -
Can anyone explain why so many people who do not like prog rock - or even rock - of any sort appear to love Rush (me for example)?
Rush seem(ed) to be able to avoid the constructs and pretensions of many other prog bands. Their musicianship serves their imaginations and music, rather than revelling in technique and demonstration. I honestly think this attitude is palpable and people pick up on it, they are very humble chaps and their friendship seems more important than the music.

Francis Dunnery's new album, Frankenstein Monster.

A very sad state of affairs. Should never have got to this stage if people were being reasonable.
I agree with all of the above. It feels like the last album where the songs were 'written', rather than assembled in Protools. I kind-of agree with you, Dingus - there's only three or four standout songs on it, but the mediocre stuff is much better than I remember. Alex should be banned from layering guitars. It sucks the life out of the performances. The drums are lovely... listen to the kick on the intro to 'Leave That Thing Alone'. Why can't they mix records like that these days?
I still think the best recorded sound of Neil Peart's drums are on Moving Pictures. That's the perfect Rush recording there is for me, the whole album sounds lush, open and dynamic.
A bit late to the party with this bit of advice: One of the first things I do when I move in to a new place, or new neighbours move in next door to me, is introduce myself and tell them that I play guitar, bass and drums! I point out that I try to keep the noise down as much as possible and, as I have kids, I rarely play after about 7pm. I then tell them that; if the noise is ever too much then just pop round and tell me as I don't want to annoy anyone with something I do for fun. So far I have lived in flats, terraced houses, semi-detached houses and detached houses and I've never had my neighbours complain or ask me to turn down.
You are a rare and splendid man. -
After the recent discussions we've had on BC about modern-day Rush, whether they've still got it. and whether the production is any good... ...Alien Shore from Counterparts popped up on shuffle in the car today, and I ended up listening to the whole album. I massively underrated this at the time. Yes, there's a couple of turkeys on it, and the odd dodgy keyboard flourish, but there's some great songs and the production is dynamite. It's live, dynamic and natural sounding. Alex's guitar is focussed and gnarly. It sounds like you're in a room with a power trio. The slide began after this one, I reckon.
I never liked it, apart from the guitar on Cut to the Chase. Then just like you, one of them shuffled the f*** out of me a couple of months ago. I feel exactly the same way about the album as you do now. It was exactly the same process and result as yorn.
The last part, the snoring. I am being considerate in the fact he(or she) may or may not be able to help the fact they snore, extremely, loudly. We've put up with it form the day we moved in. I feel I've had the amp on 'loud' only a handful of times and the past 2 times(causing the complaint) for any considerable length of time. They couldn't bare it one weekend. I'm not after getting into a complicated tit for tat arguement about it, I just want to know what I can do to help the situation.
Then talk to them in a calm and reasonable manner, making it clear that you have no wish to disturb or to be disturbed. I do understand we may not have the full story or the deeper personal issues, but from what you've said I stand by my current opinion. -
was this at me? If so, I am in a band, we had a live thing at the weekend, and we have rehearsal this week and a gig the following Friday, which I have 6 tickets left for if any one is interested.
Yeah it was. I can't understand why you are frustrated in that case, you can blast your meat with a band in a rehearsal studio and on stage. Give your neighbours a break and practice unamplified or with headphones. It's desperately annoying having noisy neighbours. You should perhaps have diffused any potential for ill-feeling by talking to them beforehand, saying you're a musician and that sometimes, at reasonable hours and not for longer than 30 minutes, you may need to make a bit of noise, if it happens at a bad time, hammer on the floor and you'll stop. It's not about rules, it's about basic consideration for others. Things can get very unreasonable very quickly with neighbours and some less articulate types think aggression is the best way to deal with situations. It never is. Try to talk calmly with them and apologise for disturbing them, mentioning the snoring may be a diplomatic nightmare if you aren't careful. -

I know how I would feel if I was your neighbour Sounds to me like you need to get out your room and get in a band. -
I have watched a few of his vids and they are pretty good. I wonder if his glove has an effect on his tone? I bet a lot of kids where gloves as a result of watching his videos not realising why he wears it..
I wear very similar gloves, although not for medical reasons, purely because I'm a right tart and they look cool, but also because they stop my hands sticking to the glossy neck on a sweaty gig. The only effect I have noticed it that everything feels and sounds a little smoother, but they have no effect on mobility, speed and accuracy. They are silk liner gloves and they feel like a second skin.
I think the Harley Benton range from Thomann is as good as any for a beginner
Maybe. But It's nice if a young beginner can try a guitar first and buy it from a decent local music shop and get some aftercare. That might not be possible in the OPs location.
Yep. However I suspect new is the key since it's a pressie, so the Pacifica would get my vote. Excellent guitars.
