I love the feel of a pick...it just works! But, about a year ago I got annoyed with being ultra fast with a pick, and rubbish with fingers. Fast forward to now, and my finger style is something I'm becoming proud of.
That's good, man. My fret hand is fast, but my pick hand fingers can't really keep up with the other, pick obviously can. I can't see the point of trying to get much faster with my fingers anymore.
I try and maintain a certain standard with all playing techniques, so if they're called for I can whip em out. It's also fun to play differently sometimes.
That's true enough.
As Anthony Jackson says the Bass is a type of Guitar... Hey you will be trying a six-string (bass) next B
No I won't! I came from guitar, and won't be going back I like playing guitar and it's a useful tool, but bass is my passion now. The idea of a six string bass appalls me, but I am prone to changing my mind constantly
I often use a pick, can be a real subject of contention to some bass players though.
I know what you mean. I did a little bit, I have always thought immense finger style is very impressive, but to be honest, I've got to thinking it's a bit of a sham, I can't really see many advantages to using fingers at the moment. I love the damping control the most, it's great for dynamics and you can get a lovely slow and controlled release that's impossible with fingers.
-
Having learned a bit of Chris Squire recently, I've started taking a pick to rehearsals. I am absolutely loving it! So much so, the only reason I feel I want to use finger-style is when I need a bit of rub-a-dub or classical/flamenco style, which is rarely. I love the almost complete control I have over fast runs, tone, attack, pinch harmonic accents, and most of all damping. I can't really see me going back to fingers.
It would be nice if gman had identified himself. It would make sense that if no doctors can identify the root cause of an issue physically, that that issue might be psychological. The problem is the way it comes accross from the OP and gman is that every RSI type condition is down to stress, when clearly there are lots of physical conditions which can be treated with the wonders of modern medicine.
There are many conditions which have psycho-social elements. What i find intolerable about the OP is that he or she is saying that an undiagnosed condition is probably psycho-somatic. That is a dangerous assumption to make. Injury can be exacerbated by psycho-social effects, but they are rarely the cause.

What do you love about your bass/sound?
xilddx replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in General Discussion
I personally don't have a "sound", wouldn't want one either. My "sound" is whatever I think is right for my bands' music, and that changes regularly, and in two bands each song has different sounds. My main bass is as versatile as it needs to be to make quick onstage adjustments and weighs 9lbs. My rig weighs about 6lbs and I can get pretty much any sound I imagine through it. I would hate to have a trad rig - amp, cab, some effects and a couple of basses. Really you're enjoying yours and your new gig though, OTPJ -
Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.
A couple of me and the CAR Gus G3 from a recent gig...
I have to say, the Gus looks fantastic in action, looking good yourself too! -
I'd rather have the buyer collect in person to be honest, since this is something you'd probably want to see in person. Also accepting paypal is a bit of a problem for me because I'm at my withdrawal limit.
Why have you got Post It notes on it then?

Funny innit, I had fairly dull sounding coated rounds because I love a dubby sound, but lately I've been playing with a pick, and put some DR Hi-Beams on last night, I'm also in heaven but with a wonderful piano like tone with plenty of zing. Funny innit.
Fixed. I can assure you that I intended for this to be a fix-up-and-have-a-bass-with-character (what a mouthful ) project. Please don't make assumptions about me based on my ramblings.
fair enough. RE: the second pic. How the f*** do you do that to a bass?! He's either been trying to shag it, or it's had a bad fall onto the back of the neck, the shock of which has pulled the finish away and loosened it. My $$ has a high gloss black finish, it marks fairly easily but I can't imagine it getting to that state.
I've contacted the seller to ask for a refund to see what he says. I'd rather get the money back to put towards a Thumb NT4 or something. Rich: I don't expect the seller to refund me the money to get the finish done as that's just unreasonable. But if I get a refund I do expect it to cover getting the frets to "very good condition" and the neck "straight" as described and for the other issues he neglected to mention, ie the replaced and poorly refitted nut (which is ~30 Euros delivered from Thomann) Slidx: I try not to exaggerate problems, but I do scrutinize. Here are some pics of the paint, or lack thereof! http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/4486/p10007174487508.jpg http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/4672/p10007185235589.jpg
Second pic is a 404 but the first one just shows a small circle of missing paint, I thought you meant it was coming off like it had leprosy. Take the wedge. Do the frets yourself, it's easy. Get the highly prized JAN1 fitted properly, or again, do that yourself. Think about patching up the finish. You don't really want natural wood do you? It looks so horribly musicianly. My other issue is you have now strongly implied you would prefer a 4 string, which further compounds my thought you were after a bargain to sell on.
I agree with what others have said, 100 quid should be more than enough to get those things sorted. And the main reason it was cheap in the first place was because of the bashed paintwork, so it's a bit unfair to bring that into the equation. TBH the further it goes the more it sounds like you're trying to talk yourself out of keeping it, so the best thing is just to send it back and get a full refund. You obviously aren't overjoyed with it.
See, I'm starting to think it's not the bargain he hoped it would be, but is trying to turn it into one because he actually likes it. Plus, on a point of principle, the description wasn't accurate.

Fingerboard is wenge. The frets are worn but they aren't that bad, maybe about a third lower than my fairly new Corvette $$. No sweat, level and re-crown them yourself with a Thomas Ginex kit, piece of piss. The relief doesn't look too bad. The finish is another matter, but you knew there were issues with that. Some Warwick experts on here seem happy to have offered to shell out £600 at least for it, so £650 isn't bad. You like the LEDs, that's why you said you bought it. Did you get a bit excited about a potential bargain and not ask for better photos and forgot to send detailed questions perhaps? EDIT, looking at the pics again, what do you mean the paint is coming off all over the place? Kinda looks ok to me. Are you, perhaps, one of life's exaggeraters?
went to dawsons music in manchester on monday, and saw a ricken backer for the first time. omg they are amazing! dint reli like the look from the pics on the net but when its infront of you............. wooooow! i need one!
Did you play it? I would have a more enjoyable experience playing the cables on the Severn Bridge than I would playing my mate's 4003.
-
My mate's 4003 is sitting right here. It is black with white binding and pickguard, like Geddy's, and it looks GORGEOUS! He bought it new a few years ago. He really looks after it too, mint, kept in its case when not in use. BUT, it plays like a dog. This is the funny thing, he took it in to Charlie Chandlers Guitar Inexperience in Hampton Wick recently. He asked for, and I quote from the CC GE receipt here, "Lower action for optimum playing, particularly hi at the nut.". Well, he got it back and he's not very happy. Action on the E at the 12th is 5mm, they recut the nut I believe, but did not lower the top of it, so the strings are now sitting in very deep trenches. When one plays it, the G string keeps falling off the fingerboard. The neck seems to have too much relief. I can't believe that's the best they could do, but I won't be touching it, fiddly things, Rics, especially the truss rods. I've told him to take it back and tell them to sort it out. £50 + strings. w***ers. Anyway, I kinda wanted a Ric and A/Bed it with my Warwick Corvette $$. The Ric couldn't come close to competing. It was dull and weedy with not enough snap and growl. I was really disappointed. Looks GORGEOUS though.
Freedoms?
They are like those things you get for a quid in the pub toilet, except they have no knobbly bits, don't taste of black pepper vodka or curry, are they are FREE.

I liked the Jamaica Boys album. That was pretty damn good.

Top tip when switching to pedals from multi FX
xilddx replied to steviedee's topic in General Discussion
To me, the Pedaltrain Mini is the most beautiful pedalboard ever. It's the perfect size for a stage, light, easy to carry, easily configurable, looks swish, and the smaller size forces you to really think hard about which particular effects you need/will use, how you will use them, and how many you actually need/will use.
Seconded, I had one, it was ace. And pretty. -
Their customer service is EXCELLENT. I received mine within days & because I bought 3 sets he chucked in a free extra set free!
So far so very good, he's a great communicator, and very accommodating. I'll post pics and a review of the process and appearance when I've done them.
-
I'd keep it and spend a couple of hundred on a decent S/H Hohner Steinberger cricket bat copy. You'll be amazed at the quality tones and build, and they are very light.
Given the state of the off topic though, it wouldn't be surprising if it was deleted, and rightly so. The forum there really has turned into a bit of a toilet. Every other thread is "I take drugs/I hate the police/I'm bitter about..."..."/. The good stuff is severely lacking in there at the moment unfortunately.
I'm, sorry Chris, but that's such bollocks, mate. I think you have the Daily Mail Reader Blinkers on. Go and have another look at the OT front page and you'll see all sorts of useful, helpful, humorous and supportive threads there. Go and have a look, and get your normally balanced perspective back. Only one or two are of the type you describe.

Hey, well done mate! Good feeling isn't it!
