1.
Cool. Revenge being one of the bona fide gay clubs of Brighton, you should have a fantastic crowd!
Excellent! Thanks man
  2. Villagers have had to drop out so we'll be headlining this gig if the promoter can't find a replacement. So we'll be on a bit later and doing a longer set if that's the case.
  3. My mate's got one, plays like a dream, best action I've seen on a Fender.
  4. This should be a good 'un! http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=106034406106630
BAXTER DURY, KIT RICHARDSON, THE BORDER SURRENDER May 20th, The Old Queens Head (44 Essex Road Islington, London N1 8LN) Following April’s volcano wash out where we lost our line-up to acts stranded all around the globe, OIW comes back bigger and stronger on May 20th, and with less natural disasters! (hopefully). Here's the sterling line-up for our next bash in the gorgeous surroundings of the Old Queens Head; BAXTER DURY We are more than a bit excited to be welcoming BAXTER DURY to the Oh! Inverted World stage, his dad might have been the legendary Ian Dury, but Baxter has been carving out a niche of his own and proven to be a brilliant lyricist and songwriter in his own right. After signing to Rough Trade Records he put out two simply amazing records, “Len Parrot’s Memorial Lift” (featuring collaborations with Portishead's Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley, and Richard Hawley) and 2005’s excellent “Floor Show”. If you haven't seen Baxter before then let us tell you that this will be something a little bit special. KIT RICHARDSON We will also have the wonderful KIT RICHARDSON on the bill, there always seems to be some reason or the other that this show hasn’t happened yet (volcanoes were just the last in the series), but FINALLY we are delighted to have Kit confirmed and along for the night. Her live shows are something to behold as you will find out on May 20th! THE BORDER SURRENDER And if that wasn’t enough (it never is for you people!), we’re also bringing you the amazing THE BORDER SURRENDER to join us for the evening too! These guys are so on their way up it’s getting scary, and their tuneful Americana tinged music has been gathering momentum since they first hit the road in January. They released their first EP in April to a packed crowd of nodding, knowing folk on Charlotte Street, and now they’re bringing their great live show to Oh! Inverted World. It’s going to be damn good folks. We’ve also got the one and only MR DAVE DEPARES back on the decks to make everyone happy and drunk on music throughout the night. Get yourself down to this one and we’ll see you on May 20th! It's only a fiver with a flyer too (coming soon)…
5. My mate has one of those, exactly the same. Loves it, and it's one of the nicest Fenders I've played.

I'll be at the Jazz Café gig in August, anyone else coming?
  7. I'll be playing with Krupa and Hami at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton on Saturday 15th May. We're on at 20:45 at the venue called Revenge (on level 2)... half hour set. Take ‘Emotional Yoyo’, a driving beat, thumping bass, Middle Eastern melodies, poptastic/Bollywood female vocals courtesy Krupa, toasting some great hooks — this is London." - www.flyglobalmusic.com "Especially worthy of a mention is singer Krupa who is, I believe, a relatively new member of the band as I’d never seen her perform before. To be on stage with TGU as the sole female vocalist is no small potatoes – you are treading in the hallowed footsteps of the legendary Natacha Atlas, after all – but Krupa did herself proud and went down a storm with the die-hard fans" Toxin Magazine April 09
Be great to see you there. 8.
As title suggests, newish to fretless and loving it. I have a six string that I want to try some new strings on, i'm really geting in to the percussive sounds with slap and love the warm mellow jazzy sounds eminating from the warwick thumb. So here it is, i'm looking for advice on best value make, sound etc... it is a ebony fretboard. Cheers ya all!
I use a few different types on my Corvette STD FL with ebony board, depending on mood. For a more upright thump and fast decay I love the LaBella Black Nylon Tapewound, lovely tension on those. If I want some growl and a little bit of zing, I like DR Handmade Black Beauties roundwound, they look so cool too, all black strings do At the moment I have Warwick EMP roundwounds on, they are a bit more snarly than the Black Beauties and very growlly, but they feel a bit harsh on the fingers, a bit "sticky". All my strings are 45 - 105. Mind you, I use a POD X3 so I can pretty much get any sound from any strings on any bass. So the "core tone" don't mean sh*t to me really, I go for comfort and playability.
This tuner program produces a graph of harmonics when you play into it, which might be handy for doing your own analysis.
That's the sort of thing you need, a rudimentary spectrum analyser. Good find.
  10.
I don't understand the question.
I think Gary is asking if there is a scientific analysis of the natural sonic signature, the timbre, of a P Bass. Of course they all vary, but I suppose it simply comes from where exactly a split humbucker is placed between the bridge and nut on a 34 scale bass with a body like a P Bass. I can't see there's much else involved.
  11.
Sadly you are most certainly the exception to the rule.....
Damn right, they wanted £40 for a set of DR Black Beauties when I was last in there
  12. On Tuesday, Mrs silddx expressed concern and subsequently berated a colleague who said she wasn't going to vote because she didn't understand what the parties stood for or what their policies meant. Mrs silddx told her colleague it was her responsibility to vote, upon which she said not to worry, she would vote next year And before you say "Ah, but she could have been startlingly insightful and prescient!", she had no idea what a hung parliament was.
  13.
haha its okay silddx, I sort of realised after reading it through again in a different tone!! lol This links were awsome though!! The second one will be a big help!! Thanks!! I wont go away dont worry!! Theres way too much interesting stuff on here for that and you guys are a BIG help too!! thanks!! Ill be sure to check out that thread soon!! THANKS TO YOU ALL!! Little bit less stressed now!! lol
Glad to have cleared that up! All the best, mate. EDIT: Actually, now I've had a closer read of the links, the Stereophile link is really interesting. It describes the relationship between the fundamental and the harmonic series as a response curve on an open E on a Precision Bass, in deep detail and with the graph displayed. That's the sort of thing people need to know and affects tone signature and timbre much more than this illusion of frequency spikes. Saying there is a spike at 500Hz is not really helpful as it depends on the note you are playing. That was my joke really, that people guess what the "Classic P Bass Thump" is in terms of frequency.
  14.
Wow, calm down lol I thought this was meant to be a friendly place!! lol Obviously everyone doesnt know cos I dont and I just wanted to know if someone could help :S Guess it wasnt the place to come! Sorry! Gary
Sorry mate, I was kidding, just having a little joke Good luck with your exams and assignments! EDIT: Do these help? 15.
Hi, Im just doing a write up for uni and I need to find out what the natural frequencies for a Fender P-bass is? I know every bass is different and all but the pickups must have a similar frequency scoop on them though? I think its a dip in the mids but Im not really sure as I have never spent enough time on one to think about it! lol I never seem to get along with P-basses for some reason... If anyone has a rough Idea of a frequency I would greatly appreciate it!! Doesn't really matter on model just need an idea! lol Cheers, Gary
Come on man, EVERYONE knows the frequencies of a P Bass, it's been discussed on here so often by all the P Bass tone afficionados. The frequenies are called "Classic P-Bass Thump"
  16.
very roundwoundy!
Correcty!
  17.
Gotta be worth a go, cheers
They are roundwound mate, All DR coated strings are. I have never come across anything other than black nylons, so to speak.

  20.
The berst result is obtained by using toothpaste, which is something you all have at home, toothpaste containes abrasive micro granules designed to midly polish your teeth enamel without causing damage and it works wonders on lacquered wood surfaces, plastics, and even some chrome metal parts. Put some on a soft cloth, apply to the body in a circular motion without digging into the lacquer too hard, allow to dry then polish away with another clean cloth and admire the new shine in disbelief!
I can certainly vouch for this advice. In fact it's an old model-maker's trick for polishing your Revell F4 Phantom's cockpit "glass". Mind you, I might start using T-Cut on my teeth.
  21.
Good work, glad to hear you got something out of them I find it quite worrying that they managed to crack a flightcase though, i've only ever seen one get badly damaged and that was run over by our old van (mental note - don't let the singer load your basses in)
According to Mrs silddx's cousin who has a large international antiques business, PF have massive hoppers which easily damage packages. I think he recommends InterParcel IIRC.
  22. I sent a Fender Precision in a moulded hardshell case to another BC member, Baboom, via ParcelFarce a few months ago. The mint hardshell case was damaged when received, badly cracked in two places. I was advised to take insurance when I posted it so I completed a claim form and sent it off, replete with packaging despription and photos taken by Baboom. Needless to say the claim was rejected with the usual tripe of "insufficient packaging", a very common stock response from ParcelFarce apparently. Anyway, I challenged this with my letter (below) and received a cheque for £55 which is what I asked for, and which I have just sent to Baboom. So, if you have an insurance claim rejection from ParcelTwat and need a stock letter of you own, this may be useful. Change the details to you own, obviously Your NAME Your ADDRESS DATE RE: Parcel Number HMXXXX Claims Number 00-XXXXXX Dear Appeals Manager, In response to your disappointing decision to reject my insurance claim for the damage parcelforce have done to my hard case, and your assertion that I had not packed the item sufficiently. 1. The gentleman who served me at the Post Office in Ealing, London W5 told me that it was packed sufficiently but advised me to take insurance anyway just in case of any damage or if it goes missing. 2. The item damaged was a guitar flightcase built to withstand high impact. The fact it arrived damaged despite cardboard and bubble wrap suggests it has been mistreated or has suffered an incident, both of which should be covered by the insurance I was advised to take out. I would like you to reconsider your decision. You stated in your letter such occurrences are very rare. I have since researched this online with other musicians who have used ParcelForce for sending instruments and refuse to use your services again due to damage and loss. Many claim your insurance offering, which you advise senders to purchase, is not at all effective and I was not offered any insurance terms and conditions, verbally or physically, at any time. It is clear from my research that there is a common problem with Parcelforce not paying out on insurance claims with the common answer that it was not packed sufficiently. If you do not reverse your decision, I shall pursue this matter through your Managing Director, the FSA regarding your insurance offering, and Postcomm. Yours faithfully, Your NAME
  23.
I still like to be on the hat-side in big venues.. that's more of an interaction / cue thing than pure feel, though.
I'm always stage left on small crowded stages. Purely so I don't risk mashing up another band member's face with my headstock.
  24.
My 2p: 1) If the drummer is less than brilliant, everyone else will sound like crap. 2) If you're not locked in with the kick, there will be no groove. 3) Physically being on the same side of the kit as the hi-hat is a very good idea. Peace out!
1 - Agreed, but it's the same with everything, especially bass. 2 - Totally disagree 3 - Only in tiny venues. Monitoring is the key. I like a full band mix with good vocal volume.
  25. For me, HH is the most expressive piece of the kit. I'm also a massive Copeland fan and I think a lot my rhythmic expression comes from long years of listening to the HH. I don't really follow anything in particular though, it's a combination of pulse, melody, vocal and certain parts of the kit. Sometimes all of that. Depends on the song and what part of the song.
