I've been a frugal bassist in the ten years I've been playing my first full set up cost me £80 and consisted of a carlsboro 100W combo and a washburn lyon bass and a chuck rainey bass book. I later got rid of the combo and got me a Ashdown mag 400 2x10 combo (£600) as I was unable to compete with the guitards. I got a mild case of g.a.s. last year and splashed out on a second guitar a Yamaha rbx 375 £179 got mainly for the fifth string and the active electronics. I've spent alot of time tweaking these guitars and usually get complimented whenever anyone bothers to ask for a go. But they're all with the exception of the Ashdown firmly at the budget end of the market. I've never really spent much time educating myself about what bass guitars are available I've just got on and played them. Then I went and discovered this place and full blown G.A.S. So how much should I look to be saving up? I seem to be lusting after 4 string lightly coloured wood grain bodies and larger fret markers rather than plain old dots. at least a p/j pickup configuration and active/passive switching (didn't even know that was possible till this year) or the lightwave optical pickup system though I'd want to play one before making a decision. Oh and a detuner for instant drop D. and an inbuilt breadmaker for that freshly baked smell Please don't inundate me with offers to buy your guitar as I haven't saved up yet, tho I'll definitely hit the for sale adds when I've got the wedge together.
Sounds like you need the 5-String Fender MasturCaster Deluxe to me. They've got one in at the Bass Gallery in satin blue-vein. Check 'em out. They're good.
 2. Warwick Premium Rock Bags are great. Loads of padding and a detachable neck heel pad that has velcro straps to keep the neck in place.
 3. If the RCD trips, there's a problem. Resetting and carrying on won't solve the problem. Finding a different wall socket is the very least you should do. An RCD won't protect you from a shock either, all it will do is reduce the potential harm to you from the shock, depending on the type.

 11.
Odd, after staring at the pic for a few minutes I suddenly realised there were some other bits next to the Bongo......
I was thinking how big his sofa is, massive!
 12.
Sadly, nowhere in Denmark St. I'd recommend the Gallery in Camden & that's about it for London....
Another +1 And you will get your bus fare home for your bass in any shop if you PX or sell to them. As Toasted said, sell it on here, have a little patience then go to the Bass Gallery in Camden for good deals, masses of choice and great service.
 13.
Half a mill should be ok, just raise the action a bit at the bridge.
You can't say that really, there are so many other factors to consider. Fretboard radius for one. 1mm is very little relief.
 14.
well i do try to play through them but maybe im not doing a good job of it. i dont know how people using detuning can play without this click.
C# on a normal and normally set up bass is bound to produce summat weird.
 15.
having a bit off an issue with my technique.... i think. recently i have noticed by bass sound is very clicky, almost like a korn fieldly click. its not string buzz, so im wondering wether is a technique or my bass? wether i have my action low or high i stil get the click. any ideas? i play with my fingers. cheers boys.
EQ? Either that or you are tapping the pickups with your fingers or pushing the strings onto them. Try dropping the pickups very much lower than the strings and see it the click disappears. If not, try EQ. Other than they, you could possibly have a tronics problem perhaps?
 16. I'm being self-indulgent and listening to a mix of a song from Krupa's new album that I've been sent. Can't wait to hear the rest, sounds awesome! We recorded the bass and drums in May, this is the first time I've heard it since!
 17.
No excuse for that. Surely he could hear that he was out of tune? Even without re-tuning,he should have been able to hear that he was sharp and at least be able to transposed his parts accordingly.
Not only that, NO SPARE STRINGS !!?? WTF?
 18. Yes, hello! I think I might have met you in SC a couple or three years ago. It's very Reithian here. Information, education and entertainment in equal measure. The entertainment is mainly in Off Topic which you'll not have seen before joining. Cheers!
 19.
The Hofner Jack Bass, you mean? Don't know anything about 'em I've just tried to carry all my bags and my guitar and this is not going to work. So buying a cheap bass in London it is!
It's a HOHNER, not a Hofner. They are ace. The Jack Bass is the one with a normal shaped full size body, I had one, you won't want to sell it probably They make the titchy cricket bat ones too, like a Steinberger. Great sounding, totally reliable, brilliantly portable, a bargain S/H, or new for that matter.
 20.
Afternoon guys, Sorry for yet another want-some-advice thread but you are all so good at giving constructive and helpful advice! Basically, I've got an internship in London starting tomorrow and I'm heading down from Durham later today. However, a month without bass isn't one I like the sound of so my plan was to take my Ric with me, just for noodling, practising or even the potential of a gig there. However, I'm travelling by this countries' finest National Express East Coast and will have my hands full with a suitcase, laptop and suit carrier. Lugging my bass doesn't seem a very good idea so I came up with the idea of buying something cheap-ish while I'm down there (probably from our SH forum) and then selling it on the other side? It would also be an opportunity to try out some of the fancier Squier series of VM or CV... What would your recommendations be? Take or buy?
Buy a SH Hohner headless cricket bat. £180 max. Or, like you say a decent SH Squier.
 21.
I spotted that on TV the other night too. Look how skinny that neck is! The body shape reminds me of the Music Man Big Al, but uglier:
NO! The Big Al is utterly gorgeous! So is the Chris Squire Elektra. The Fenton in the OP, however, is as horrid to the eyes as Katie Price with no make up.
 22.
Probably has less to do with tuning, and more to do with nerves.
Good point, if they are nervous. String stretching before the gig helps a lot too.
 23.
I don't know what the problem is exactly. The guitars being used are all good quality and one of the guitarists is a rep for a well known musical instrument distributor and knows his stuff when it comes to set up. They said it was to do with the heat on stage and I have to admit that it was pretty hot up there, but I didn't have any problems at all. Personally I think that they're both being too picky about the tuning. Now that someone other than me has said it and how crap it looked hopefully it will get addressed. I'm going to bring it up again at the next rehearsal, and say that they need to sort it out, I don't care how, but it needs to be done before the next gig. Interestingly, I'd seen the band play several times before I became their bassist, and this tuning issue never seemed to crop up before... BTW the complaint wasn't about audible tuning. They both have good quality pedals that mute their guitars while they are tuning. It was about the length of time it took and the fact that they did it between almost every number.
Whatever, it's a problem that needs sorting, it's unacceptable. Stage heat? Make sure the guitars are acclimatised. It's not a problem for 99% of other bands.
 24.
Shoot them?
hahaha, that was the first thing that came to mind There are no excuses for tuning audibly. None. Guitars do go out of tune, depending on the player and the guitar, but they need to manage this properly. A big problem is with inexperienced guitarists who press down to hard on their strings when playing chords, so their guitar will never be in tune, especially with open string chords. It's a nightmare. Tuning is a bit of an art. So you probably need a full and frank with the guitarist.
