You can't beat an all valve head... I'm afraid!
xilddx replied to dave74200's topic in Amps and Cabs
It's marvellous this has gone to 18 pages! It's a shame Dave feelshe's being ganged up on, and is getting all defensive because some folks don't agree with him. Personally speaking, I love it when people say I'm talking sh*t. It gets me thinking, and I realise I'm wrong sometimes. I still believe in my amp/cab sims though -
Dave, I think you underestimate Basschat. I can hand on heart say if you posted your band and maybe even some shots of you playing in front of some huge audiences people might take you more seriously, and I have enough confidence in our little forum that things wouldn't spill out of basschat! I'm really curious to know if I might have seen you live or similar! I also hate to add to the debate at this stage but I was late to the party. I have a Lightweight(ish) valve amp, what do I win?!
Some people seem to be very protective about their bands and don't publicise them. =/ -
Wiki: "The Windmills of Your Mind" (Les moulins de mon cœur) is a song with music by Michel Legrand, as well as Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman, and lyrics by the Bergmans, from the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair.
Yes, I was being a bit sarky. I thought cœur was heart? -
Anyway all. I'm off now to think of another thread to start! Thanks for all your 'friendly' comments. It's been a blast but like all good things, must surely come to an end.
It's been loads of fun mate! And I only started to read it an hour ago Good luck with your upper limb disorder, there are plenty of people on here who may be able to offer some experience, opinion or help should you wish to start a thread on the matter. All the best. -
You all love Antiques Roadshow and Fiona Fullerton.
No, it is down to playing. Many players get it apparently but like I said, there's always a laugh in it for ya!
Look Mr V, no-one is laughing at you for your condition, relax and stop being oversensitive. What do you know about your condition? Why do you say many players get it? What have you got? In other news, do you want everyone to sound like you? or do you want to sound like everyone else? or do you think all bass players should sound the same and it's just the notes that matter? Do you have iron curtains? -
Thanks all. As I said, it started as a bit of genuine advice but you've all quite rightly got your knives out and everyone's joined the party. At least I've made some people laugh.... I hope. I was never aiming to be a 'troll' cos they're supposed to write things to just wind people up. My thread never started as that, I genuinley mean what I wrote. Anyway, all of you enjoy what amps you play through and I'll enjoy mine. The only thing that has been a bit sad is the mob culture many have adopted. There are people who've admitted that they can't afford a valve amp, have tried one and prefer SS, or don't want to carry one, which is great, but what annoys me are the people who've probably never played through a valve amp, own a budget amp and have still told me i'm full of sh*t because it's been the fashionable thing to do! Cheers all.... the 'troll' x
Stop playing the victim, sunshine. What do you let little clueless midgets with cheap amps annoy you? They aren't a gang, that's ridiculous! Try to get some perspective and realise this thread has been hilarious, whether you meant it to or not. Everyone has to justify their choices and some do that more vociferously than others. Personally, I would detest the limitations using ANY amp would impose on me, that's why I don't use one. I simply can't perceive any advantages to them, except for a bit of stage monitor in small venues. I think big powerful amps will be a thing of the past within twenty years, they are already completely redundant. They are more of a visual choice than anything else. -

In all seriousness, my mate still has an old Ampeg V4B, which exhibits very nice natural compression and has a warm rich tone that is very pleasing. I've played through it many times coupled with the 8x10 Ampeg cab he used to have. He used it for a couple of gigs then sold the cab after realiseing what a waste of spinal column and car suspension it was, it was ridiculous for the pub gigs we used to play. The V4B weighs a ton. It has numerous minor electronic problems and he hasn't used it for a few years. It's expensive to run and maintain and it's more delicate than a tiny snail. It's nothing but a pain in the arse and anyway, I can completely floor it with the POD and a decent FoH. Absence of trouser flap from a rig doesn't bother me. My trousers flap anyway because I'm dancing and enjoying a nice loud full band mix in the numerous stage monitors. If you need a rig to make your trousers flap, I would suggest it is because you are not excited enough by the music you are playing to actually want to move around the stage and entertain the punters a bit. Or perhaps you are selfish and only like to hear yourself and a bit of drum. Or you are corned beef. Or have what you consider to be a small penis. Or something. -

What an hilarious thread! Couldn't be arsed to read it all of course, because it's about amps and cabs, which are really for people who like antiques and Fiona Fullerton. I too made the mistake of thinking the OP was a highly arrogant professional musician who knew his onions, whereas he may well be a clueless bedroom bubinga botherer. Who knows? Anyway, I still think amps are for people who like antiques and Fiona Fullerton. -
I love the Big Al shape, I think it's really lovely. It got a superb review in the latest Guitarist mag too. I would have a White body and maple board and white pearl PG. I love the Precision shape too. The ugly looking Fender bass is the Jazz, the offset design is too ugly and bulbous. The P is great but the neck's too fat, the J neck is a great design. The Big Al neck is too fat like P Bass. The Stingray body is too round. Your shoes are the wrong colour and your stone cladding is sh*t.

I don't feel like I'm getting bang for my buck lately with BGM. I like one or two things but I just got the Latest Guitarist and it's got loads of bass stuff in there, and the reviews are really meaningful compared to the BGM ones. They ask the manufacturers questions and quote their answers, they even pointed out an issue to PRS and PRS admitted they hadn't noticed it and will put it right in the manufacturing process. That's the sort of review I like to read.
Im gonna go with any Fender too. Tried vintage ones, new ones, 4 string, five string all different permutations and I would love to like them. But they're rubbish. Sorry. Truckstop
With you on that completely, and Rickies. I love the way they look, but they are crap compared to my Warwicks. I think people are prepared to put up with the poor design and build quality just to have "that sound". They clearly don't realise they can get a playable bass and put it through a POD and still get "that sound".
I have had them on all my basses (except for the Kubicki). Wouldn't feel right without one now. Thought I was getting a bargain ordering one from the USA once, until customs slapped another £25 on top!
I've been lucky, not a single customs charge on ten or so things I've had from the states. It's worth a shot. It will still be cheaper than getting on over here, even with customs charges.

Well, at last, the body made an appearance today! It's looking gorgeous! Just the pup and control route to do and he reckons it will be ready on Thursday. He's never made a bolt on before so I was a little nervous about the neck socket. He cut the socket over the weekend and brought it in to show me today. He's very proud of it, the neck fits beautifully, perfect and very tight. I'm delighted! The body shape needs a little smoothing out and finishing the control route doing. It's a lovely thick piece of mahogany which, because it's a small body, looks really meaty. We put the neck on the body and I'm over the moon to find there's no neck dive at all, it balances perfectly! So I'm really pleased I trusted my instinct with my design. Really looking forward to putting this together over the next few weeks. I hope no-one will be pissed off with me but I am going to finish this thread on Finnbass. It's a sort of bonding gesture http://www.finnbass.com/showthread.php?t=6608

All respect mate, these decisions have to be made sometimes. They are always reversible if the time comes when it's practical to do so. You sound like my bass hero Scott Thunes if that's any comfort
