Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
xilddx replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I'm looking for some gloves at the moment for the opposite reason I find it very difficult to play at my best when my hands are cold, and an outdoor gig on Sat was hard work until I got a little warmed up. I set my rig up to work at its best when the strings have lost their initial brightness (I use stainless Rotosounds), and find some of the more busy stuff far easier once I've got a bit of a sweat on - not always easy when playing out doors. So I'm trying various fingerless gloves to see if they will help enough to be worth keeping in the box of leads and stuff I drag to every gig.
Try the ones in my op mate, they really are great. They feel warm when you first put them on, but even on a hot sweaty gig like last night, they never once feel uncomfortable. The biggest benefits I have found are better and more consistent tone, no string noise, much smoother, much faster .. oh and did I mention better and more consistent tone? -

I've done about 18 hours of rehearsals and three gigs with the gloves. I've worn a small hole in the right hand index finger. People have made comments about them after the gigs but also mentioned the bass player too, the gloves are obviously a good device to get people to listen to the bass So, is there anyone out there playing with gloves? I can't be the only member of BC who wears them can I? -
I simply can't understand how it is possible to get a quality instrument out that cheaply. I wonder how long the hardware will last and I would worry about the quality control, neck stability and fret work. Those would be my concerns. However, I reckon it's its worth a shot, but only time will tell it it pays dividends. I actually fancy a Retrovibe Ric and upgrading the hardware and pups, if its construction is up to standard. Just received the John East preamp! All I have to do now is get the body and the mirror pickguard sorted. Delay on the body but will have it at the end of this month. Jon Shuker will be making the mirror PG for me from my WD blank. The bass should be complete in less than six weeks. Seems like a bloody long time at the moment! I should fill some of it in by posting the parts and price list.

I love those guys. Some of the soundtracks they've done for Spike Lee are gorgeous, I'm no connoisseur mind.

Warwick Rockbass Corvette or Vintage EST96 ActiveSeries?
Go for a 2nd hand Classic Vibe jazz bass instead. Very likely to be better than either the warwick Rockbass or the Vintage T
Oooh! Contentious! Do explain! -
Warwick Rockbass Corvette or Vintage EST96 ActiveSeries?

Warwicks are generally slap friendly. I bought a Rockbass Streamer off Thomann recently and the quality is stunning for the money. Great tones and a great neck. It needed a set up but I do all that myself. I have two German Warwicks and the Rockbass is certainly massive VFM. -
To get you all interested in helping me find a fabulous name for my function band I thought I'd cynically draw your attention with a competition and prizes, afterall it works for thousands of companies everyday! I need some help in finding a name for a function band so I thought that there'd be no better place to find suggestions than BC! T We're having a real struggle finding a name that suits what we do and that ticks all the boxes that need ticking for the naming procedure. A bit of background about the band:

Female-fronted five-piece
Weddings/Functions as main target audience
Usual function band mix of rock/pop/soul/disco covers
Based in South Wales/West of England
The name needs to Google well, it needs to be easy to say down the phone without having to explain, repeat or spell to everyone. We'd prefer it to be two words. It needs to appeal to brides and mothers of the bride and it must be cool. Humourous names best avoided as are offensive ones. The .com domain name should also be available. A set of strings to the winning entry! Get those creative juices flowing - good luck to one and all. Sean
Glitter-Ball Eyes or Glitterball Eyes NOT Gary Glitter Eyes.

That's fantastic! You must seriously feel ace!
I recently sold a bass to someone, not on here but through the classified ad site Preloved. Lots of comms beforehand, buyer paid with bank transfer, I sent it, tracked it, it got signed for. I sent the buyer a message later on in the day it was delivered (last Friday) to check that all was well and have heard precisely nothing since. The question is, does one just assume that everything is hunky dory (as they'd soon be on the blower if the bass hadn't turned up/been unsatisfactory)? It just nags at me that I haven't had word back that they are happy with it. Maybe I should stop worrying about the little things in life, but I do seem to focus on details at the expense of the big picture.
I've had exactly the same, nothing to worry about.

Hee Hee, Thanks gents

It looks lovely! I see the ghost of a pickguard in darker blue. Great work.

I freely admit my motivation for getting them was because I thought they would look damn cool, especially with some jewellery worn on top of them. The fact they feel so great to play with is an unspeakably big bonus -
I should have mentioned he's not scary at all and it's incredibly funny when you're at the match and it's in context. Anyway. I can't see how I could hold a plectrum with gloves on.
I was only kidding mate I can imagine it's hilarious. I haven't tried them with a pick yet, will be doing so tomorrow. -
Gloves! I couldn't. 'Mad Jock' who sits a few rows behind me at Brentford might turn up at a gig. Whenever he sees an opposing player with gloves on it's usually like this..... "Hey you with the gloves. Yer big ****ing ****. Yeah you. Get those gloves off. It's a mans game yer big **** ******* yer nay doing yer ******* mam's washing up yer *****. Yeah and you as well yer *****" etc. For that reason Nigel. I'm out.
Yeah yeah yeah right. He sounds like a real MAN. 26 years ago he would have been shouting "Hey you with the underpants. Yer big ****ing ****. Yeah you. Get those underpants off. It's a mans game yer big **** ******* yer nay doing yer ******* mam's washing up yer *****. Yeah and you as well yer *****" etc. You know what it's like in those scots prisons. -
Having read Shrek's post about his underperforming Warwick head, I thought I'd post a little something in praise of the ancient but still completely trusty Hartke 3500 head I bought from Brycebites (remember him? wish he was still here) many years ago, and which I use for rehearsals and small gigs. Christ, it's loud. I mean, really. If I use it with one of my 8Ω Nemesis cabs it's supposedly only delivering 180 watts, but good god it delivers it well. And with both cabs, it's fackin huuuuge. Sometimes I think about flogging it and getting something else, but then I think... why? It definitely ain't broke, so why try to fix it? It's great. Anyone else got some Hartke lurrrve?
That's what my mate has, with a Hartke 4x10 cab. It makes a gorgeous sound with my Warwicks. If I used rigs, I would seriously be thinking of going that route.
I meant to ask before: Do you also sit on your hands for a bit, so it feels like someone else is playing your bass?
Who do you think I am? Alain Caron?! -
I think I now know where Alex Claber got his inspiration from for his column in the latest BGM

I'm in the middle of a pretty intense week of rehearsals and gigs with three bands. I have been wearing the gloves in rehearsals. They are great to play with and I feel totally comfortable playing while wearing them. My fingers glide over the strings and I forget I am wearing them. They offer a real advantage to me in terms of consistency. It's important to get the right fit and luckily I did first time. They don't get loose or saggy even after three hours of intense playing. At the moment, I can't see myself playing without them again. -
I've noticed that some contentious threads hanging about this weekend have had the usual effect of raising some levels of ire. Just for a change, I'd like to offer something of beauty, as a counterpoint, to help reset the karma of the site and a bit of relief from 'other issues' Have a good weekend T
I fackin hate that piece of so-called music.

No issues for me with Chrome either.

Never had a similar experience, but I would change my member name if I were you Seriously, something very odd is going on with your bass. You should get it looked at by a pro, I don't have a clue why it should keep going out of tune like that. I'm sorry to say it sounds to me like it may be serious.

I just got the brass Hipshot Rickenbacker replacement bridge. Looks lovely and weighs ... 1.5lbs Any neck dive worries I had with this bass are fast disappearing
