1.
was privileged enough to see Zappa at Wembley in '88, I think they were his last shows here. just magical. Thunes a great fit for Zappa I always thought, punky and contrary
I was there too, amazing evening.
 2.
Ah, but he's using a pick so will get an automatic thumbs down from all the 'proper' bassists on here...
They know what they can do, don't they
 3.
yeah opinions, some of us have them.
Cool, what's yours?
 4.
Nigel, I'm no jazz cat but I think you should be pleased with yourself (especially if that's your first time). I'd only say to remember that it doesn't always have to be four equal notes, you can adjust the phrasing to adjust the emphasis and so make it talk more at least some of the time - if that makes any sense.
No, I agree wholeheartedly, mate! I've attached another clip from the last walking section of that recording where I'm doing a few things like that. I wanted to start off simpler and add those things at the end. BTW it was recorded on a ZOOM H2 if you're thinking of getting one.
 5. Funny innit, I post a video of a bassist who plays in perfect time, supports the rest of the band melodically, rhythmically and harmonically, plays some lovely ska folk with great tone and great panache, and even looks good on stage, and other bassists don't get it. Funny innit.
 6.
errrr..really..? ok.
Ahh, you must be the Alain Caron fan?
 7. Great feel and tone. Great song too.
 8. I had a biggie on Monday when I improvised a jazz walking bass line for a cover of SoaD's Chop Suey! at Kit's rehearsal. I so enjoyed doing that, never played walking bass before, well not for more than a minute or two as a warm up jam or something. I think I will become addicted, there's something deeply satisfying about it. I need to learn some theory and practice a helluva lot though instead of trying to play what I'm singing in my head and not hitting many of the notes I'm after. I posted a clip here looking for jazz head opinions. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=98636
 9.
It certainly was a nice compliment. Quite impressed me. I can pick out if someone plays melodic, driven, funky or plays around the root, but to actually notice that someone sounds very dark and ends a lot of the runs descending was quite detailed. Very impressive.
Thank you mate! Feel free to chuck us a bassline and I'll give it the silddx analysis
 10. Jesus, you are one talented m*****f***er aren't you! Amazing! However, I found the production very tiring to listen to, I had to give up after about 50 secs. The guitars are painful at normal listening levels on the cans - piercing high freqs, and it seems like the loudness is to the max. Other than that, superb!
 11.
Blimey, how do you analyse it into that much detail? Quite amazed at that. Might have to ask you to analyse some of my bass lines. Would be amazed at what you find.
Erm, thanks I'm not sure what to say to that, it wasn't anything clever, it's just what I heard from one listen. I don't know squat about theory except some of the very basics so I don't know what Mike is actually doing. I just use my ears. Maybe it's years of listening to Zappa and stuff and reading loads of sh*te about music I'll take your comment as a very nice compliment, thank you very much! Maybe I do have good ears after all!
 12. That is a lovely sequence, and your playing is, as always, excellent. Your modal harmony (if that's the right expression) sounds very dark to me, and I notice you end a lot of your runs descending. Does this say something about you do you think? Is it a conscious choice?
 13.
I'm no real judge but it sounded fine to me. I'm in a similar position - almost no theoretical knowledge, can't read, and I'm often trying this sort of thing out with varying degrees of errr... success. Well I've taken the plunge and had my first bass lesson in over 30 years' playing (on and off - more off than on). The way music was taught at school really put me off - BUT..... OutToPlayJazz has shown me that there is nothing to be scared of. I managed some stave and finger position reading and came away with lots of exercises to get the correct fingering for differing neck positions - something I was basically unaware of It looks like the bass stave can be your friend. The aim is to be able to play more intelligently because I know why I'm making the choices I do, rather then relying on trial and error and gradual osmosis from what appears to work. Get some lessons in - it's a real short cut to the osmosis method! A converted sceptic.
I'm with you there, brother! EDIT: I think you mean "skeptic" though
 14.
Like Bilbo, I'll give it a listen later (not that I'm a "cat" by any definition )... but I'm assuming it's actually "Chop Suey!" by SoaD. The phrase "self-righteous suicide" features in the chorus, but it's not the song title. Right. That's my pedantry done for the day. [Unless they actually did do a song with that name... but Google hasn't turned it up.]
Dude, you are quite correct! I thought Chop Suey was the name of the album. Cheers.
 15.
I can't play files in work so can't comment yet but am I eager to hear this?!!! (I also quite like what SoaD I have heard so that's a good start)
Cool Thanks Bilbo! I am just as eager for your comments! It's half a minute long, the intro verse to the song, no vocal, just piano, guitar, bass and drums.
 16. OK, so Kit wants to do a cover of Chop Suey! by System of a Down (I've never heard the original), and in rehearsal on Monday she played us her piano and vocal rendition of it and wanted to know what me and Oli, the drummer, thought we could do with it. I thought some of it sounded perfect for a sort of cod-jazz burnout. So I steeled myself to improvise some walking bass for the first time. It's over a descending chromatic run staring on C# and ending in G. Now, I'd never really played walking bass before, I have very little theory and I can't sightread. So I improvised by ear based on what I heard in my head over the chord sequence. I probably hit about 50% of the notes I was thinking of but I was in the ballpark. It's really hard to do! Even though I don't really dig on jazz, I have always admired the jazz cats for their amazing ability to improvise while knowing exactly what they are doing theoretically. I have pretty much NO IDEA what I'm doing. I thought what I did sounded ok and I got a real buzz playing it! But I don't have jazz ears. So, calling all jazz cats, how did I do? Indeed, what am I actually doing?! Is it childish and unsophisticated? Full of technical error? Should I be quite pleased with myself? Or am I deluded? Thank you Here are the two clips - 1 is the first section of the song, and 2 is the last section of the song. I like the second one best, more energy and confidence.

 18.
Hi all, Have a beautiful mexican 60's re-issue Jazz which I love. My only dissapointment is the pots. Could anyone advise me on the best replacement pots to get, seems like CTS is the standard and linear for volume and audio for tone. Any advice would be much appreciated, also, would changing the pots change the tone which I don't want to do. Cheers. Ossie
Get CTS pots and a Switchcraft jack.
 19.
Can someone give me a steer on a sensible ballpark figure to ask for my Corvette $$? It's a 2007 model, 4 string, natural, bolt on neck. Never gigged and in mint condition with Warwick Gig Bag and all the swing tags, wax, truss rod tool etc etc. Can't find a comparable 4 stringer here. Thanks guys
I would probably want £750, and end up selling for about £500. Sadly SH Warwicks go for much less than they're worth. I picked up my $$ with a high gloss finish for £470ish on the bay a couple of years ago. The spec new for mine would be over £1,700.
 20. Black silk gloves
 21. That is absolutely mint! And my favourite combination Fender bass, P body/J neck. Gorgeous colour too.
 22. That's an excellent job!
