Over the past couple of months, I have hardly played bass at home, but I play guitar every day. And when I go to rehearsals as a bassist and play songs we know, and work on new songs, I am a much better bassist. I am more fluid, more imaginative, more dynamic, more expressive and more comfortable. I am also playing more with a pick and right hand damping more. Along with the volume pedal which has become a large part of my natural style, I am really feeling it now, not just mechanical. I am a much better player through not playing at home. Not that I am advocating this approach you understand. I am finally happy not being a reader, I got fed up of feeling guilty about it and shed that stupid burden. I am a happy bassist (for a f***ing change ).

How to keep/store a bass which won't be used for long
xilddx replied to GCYPbass's topic in General Discussion
I would loosen the string about half a tone if I was posting a bass, but there is no need to slacked strings if the bass is being stored. With the strings and truss rod working as intended how can there be any risk to the neck?
Absolutely right. A properly strung, tuned and adjusted instrument can be stored in a case in reasonable temperatures for as long as you like. The bass doesn't know if it's being played or stored. There is no need whatever to slacken or remove strings, slacken the truss rod, etc. If the fingerboard has no finish (not a coated maple board for example) lightly oil it first to help prevent moisture loss or absorption, but you should be doing this anyway. -
My friend, Renu, needs a bassist. I can't take anything else on at the moment so I'm putting the word out here. She is looking for a bassist to JOIN the band, not just be a session type arrangement, but I suppose that's possibly flexible. Renu has an album out called Love From London, with Seb Roachford on drums. Although she plays drums in the live outfit. She has a single launch next month and a live radio session. The 8 piece band consists of: Drums, Percussion, Theremin, Double Bass, Guitar, 3 Singers (including an Opera singer), Viola and Violin. Most of whom are classically trained pros. They rehearse in the Stoke Newington/Hackney area. Ideally you will play upright and electric bass, be professional in your attitude, and reliable. Most gigs are paid, except for the promotional ones. Renu http://renu.org.uk/ 23rd september - single launch 28th October - possible gig at V&A 5th November - live radio session Rehearsals: 8th sept, 20 and 21 sept.

Brilliantly musical and inventive playing from Dale Black..imo
xilddx replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Mmm, not sure. He is clearly very very talented. I found his phrasing and general musical demeanor slightly anxious. It's hard to explain but it's not relaxed and smooth, wasn't sitting quite right for me, like it was one of those demonstrations that feels it's right on the edge of the player's abilities, fabulous though they are. Just my opinion you understand. It's been posted before, but this is much more my bag, because it is thrilling but also relaxed, you can feel how smooth it is and how completely comfortable the player is, and you can sense the way he's feeling while he's playing. It's entirely in the pocket, and the drummer's phrasing is so sympathetic to the groove allowing so much space for the bass to push and pull the overall dynamics. -
I have indeed seen a single laminate usually wenge move an entire neck blank. This is the reason for letting wood sit as long as possible before cutting it. I also let the wood sit for as long as I can after it has been cut up in to laminate sections. In my case every thing is cut up in to 30 mm wide strips. This is left as long as possible be fore use. A laminated neck with different woods and proper grain orientation is a more stable structure than a single piece. If the single piece does move it all moves the same way. In a laminate neck if one piece moves there are others that don't. With the precautions mentioned above I would always use a laminate neck over a single piece. However there are loads of single piece necks that are just fine.
Interesting. Coincidentally, I was looking at your site earlier wondering if you might be able to make me a neck with the same neck socket dimensions. -
Frets are meant to be replaced, even on an all original vintage Fender. You can always keep the originals to give to the new owner if they are that important and they have them put back in These things are meant to be played and kept in good condition and playability. If age, originality and provenance is what turns some people on, that's their problem.
Most pro bassists that I meet have been playing the same bass for years and have no interest in new gear and none of them are on this or any other forum - they're too busy playing that same old bass. I've bought and sold too many basses since joining BC and catching the GAS and yet I still prefer the bass I've been playing for the past 30 years. And yet I'm still here and still tempted by so many beautiful basses.............. I hate you all.
I wish I'd kept my Warwick BC made me into a proper gear slut ! -
It was indeed a Meinl cajon I saw, cheers!
A couple of percussionists I work with have them, they are fantastic! Not expensive either. Basically, the evolved from tea chests. See them a lot on flamenco groups.
