We all joined a bass forum, to buy, sell and talk BASS. Most bassists I meet in the field have never heard of Basschat, and they seem to have fewer basses and change equipment less often than many of the BCers I meet. The fact is, it's easy to TALK about gear, it's quantifiable, it has measurable value. We are a fairly materialistic bunch on here. Most people find it much harder to meaningfully express their feelings about their music, their musical philosophy, their approach to music and bass. It is much harder to TALK about. Given the sh*t that passes for inteviews with musicians, I think this is well borne out. To answer the OP, I think your surmise is heavily skewed by the demographic and the criteria, and the lack of ability to express themselves with the written and spoken word.
{moderator removed in clean up} .
Yep. Make no mistake, the non-exports are worth a LOT more than the exports. I bought mine from John too, for £675. Mine did not sell on here after being up for a month, so I put it on ebay and it sold in two days at a BIN of £675. The guy who bought it was a gem, and we're mates now. £500 for this is an excellent price. Export models go for £450. We should not be discussing price on here really

Bassist Wanted for a Quirky Band in the London Area
xilddx replied to xilddx's topic in Musicians Wanted
My friend, Renu, needs a bassist. I can't take anything else on at the moment so I'm putting the word out here. She is looking for a bassist to JOIN the band, not just be a session type arrangement, but I suppose that's possibly flexible. Renu has an album out called Love From London, with Seb Roachford on drums. Although she plays drums in the live outfit. She has a single launch next month and a live radio session. The 8 piece band consists of: Drums, Percussion, Theremin, Double Bass, Guitar, 3 Singers (including an Opera singer), Viola and Violin. Most of whom are classically trained pros. They rehearse in the Stoke Newington/Hackney area. Ideally you will play upright and electric bass, be professional in your attitude, and reliable. Most gigs are paid, except for the promotional ones. Renu http://renu.org.uk/ 23rd september - single launch 28th October - possible gig at V&A 5th November - live radio session Rehearsals: 8th sept, 20 and 21 sept.
Renu tells me she doesn't necessarily need someone who plays DB. Or a sh*t hot session type. She needs someone who can play with some sparkle and who can pick up material quickly and be a part of the band. Cheers, Nx -
I played Happy Jack's old - and your new - Status PJ. I was sceptical about the whole Status graphite thing but the bass looked great (nice cherry coloured retro look) and the neck was a delight. Didn't feel sterile and plastick-y at all. Good score Nige
Thanks man I have just lowered the action and relief, and narrowed the string spacing, it plays like a dream! The differences between it and a wood neck are imperceptible, it vibrates like wood (great tone transfer through the headstock) and sounds exactly like a wood bass unplugged. It's a cracker! Take care, see you at the Bash I hope.

Guys, you're right, thanks! I just picked up a lovely Status Vintage PJ from Happy Jack, and this will be my main bass for a while. I think I will wait and see if I can get a real Warwick neck, fit it and fit the battery box I've had hanging around since before the build. I just needed the money really, to get a good reliable bass that feels right. But I've sold my Roland kit which covered a fair bit of it, so I think I'm cool. Strangely, as soon as the neck let me down, I lost a lot of my attachment to this bass, but it does play and sound great, so it will stay and get sorted at some point. Thanks again, I need that talking to Cheers, Nx

I count Jack as a friend in meatspace, he's a lovely guy, completely honest and trustworthy, and he is incapable of bullshit. He's fair and honourable, a man of deep integrity. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I part exchanged my Roland drum set for a cracking Status Graphite Vintage PJ in trans red earlier this evening! Deal with Jack with complete confidence. He knows his stuff about basses, always does a fair price and you'll never get a dud. Thanks Jack, glad you enjoyed the Golden Glory! See you soon mate, Nx
I hope it doesn't get funding then I'll get a loan and make it myself and make thousands, THAT'S CAPITALISM.
I wonder if he has any USPs or designs that have patents pending. That may stop you. If it was an easy move, and the market is established, Boss or whatever may have made one by now. But anyway, you can already make these noises with other kit. I think one of the USPs is that this is in a stompbox and hence much more portable, but possibly limited in scope and application. Let's see!
I wish there were more headless Sei basses around, I've always wanted a Sei!
They had a black Hohner Jack-like 4-string Sei in the Gallery last year. It played beautifully and had the shallowest neck I've ever set hands on. I think it was about £1200 and may have been S/H.
The headless Washburn was really light, very comfortable to play over long periods and just never went out of tune.
You really will like the Hohners then! My Jack Bass was exactly that and had great sounds too. Maybe not quite as light, they are all rock maple neck throughs.
I'm fairly certain the Steinberger Synapse has EMG's with the coils in a P type config. Might be worth a look?
They look good, but be sure to play before buying, quality control is not great according to some, certainly the guitar I sent back was appalling, it had a misaligned head-piece over 1mm out, other finish and parts issues, and poor fret finishing, some sharp fret ends. They are very expensive for Korean made instruments of that suspect quality level.
I had a Washburn for around 10 years but I always found the pick ups lacked any growl and the active circuit was a bit pants. I'll have to give a Hohner a try and see what it's like.
I think you'll like the Hohners then. Advise you avoid the Spirits completely, they are children's toys by comparison.

There are a couple of Washburn Statii for sale on here around £400. Not played one but I hear very good things. An excellent condition Hohner probably £250ish Spirits go for £150 - £200
The Jack Bass (Hohner) are really teriffic value for money and a really comfortable shape to wear. The tone tends to quite an organic, woody sound, but can do "modern" sounds with a tweak of the eq. I used to run mine passive. The neck cross section is quite round and deep by modern standards, and narrower than a "P" at the nut, but good to play for long periods. And they never go out of tune, just like the B2As you've seen. The ones with humbuckers probably get nearer to the P tone, but the pickup placement isn't quite the same. That said, you do get more tonal flexibility, even with the passive models. For what you can pick them up for 2nd hand, it's worth trying one, you won't lose money if you sell it on. They do make nice fretlesses too if you whip the frets out. Only caveat: check there is enough adjustment on the truss rod.
I have had a Hohner Jack Bass Custom and I regret selling it. Fat growly tones, totally stable tuning, I have a B2ADB boat paddle now and it is fantastic. massive dub tones and sparkly highs. Never underestimate the Hohners, rock solid build quality, neck through design, and completely reliable. They feel very comfortable too, with Jazz-like neck dimensions. I've had four Hohners in my time, basses and guitars. However, the Steinberger Spirits I've had were very poor, no comparison with the Hohners. Poor build, bolt on, crap pups, passive, dodgy truss rod on one of them. For a cheaper headless, IME, Hohners are absolutely the way to go. I've had three of these Sprits, never again.

Mint three ply. -
These are £45 new + p&p. To you, £35 on your doorstep. This is in mint condition. It has interviews with many of the band including Scott Thunes. Number 152 of 400 individually numbered copies. Publication date: 16th August 2010 Deluxe edition: Limited edition hardback with slipcase, individually numbered and signed by the author. In 1988, Frank Zappa toured with a twelve-piece band that had rehearsed for months, learned a repertoire of over 100 songs and played an entirely different set each night. It is why, in Zappa's own words, it was "the best band you never heard in your life" - a reference to West Coast American audiences who never got the chance to see this particular touring ensemble due to the disharmony between Zappa's "clonemeister" Scott Thunes and nine of the other band members. 'Zappa The Hard Way' documents that last tour, which deteriorated as the tour progressed through America and on to Europe. If you think touring can be fun, think again! Yes there were groupies and the usual paraphernalia associated with rock 'n' roll, but there was also bitterness and skulduggery on a scale that no one could imagine. Author Andrew Greenaway has interviewed the surviving band members and others associated with the tour to unravel the goings on behind the scenes that drove Zappa to call a halt to proceedings, despite the huge personal financial losses. 'Zappa The Hard Way' might just be the best book you've never read in your life! Format: Hardback (234 x 156 mm) in slipcase Pages 224 text, 32 colour plates (74 images) • Foreword by Frank Zappa’s sister, Patrice "Candy" Zappa-Porter. • Personally signed by the author. • Previously unpublished photos from the rehearsals, the studio, and other off stage shots by Lynn Goldsmith, official FZ photographer for the ‘Baby Snakes’, ‘Sheik Yerbouti’ and ‘Broadway The Hard Way’ releases. Also includes many live shots from the tour. • Full 1988 discography and set lists. • Hardback. • Wibalin slipcase, foil stamped in silver.
