all great musicians, stewarts a great drummer
My top drummer mate.

I never forget how wonderful this band is. Endless inspiration for me. I can never understand why Sting gets such a slagging, apart from being a bit of a narcissistic tool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A154OavghI

Encourage learners, or 'Tell it like it is'..?
xilddx replied to Dad3353's topic in General Discussion
I just told it like it is to a fledgling songwriter soliciting opinion on his song in another thread. I was pretty critical but (I thought) encouraging. I copped a couple of slaps in the face by two other members. I feel sh*t now so I won't be doing that again. -
Ok then SubDrop I've clearly overstepped the mark. I'm really sorry, I was just saying how I felt about your song based on what I've learned over the years. If I've in any way offended you then I offer my heartfelt apologies. Believe me, my past is littered with rubbish lyrics and songs. Yours is much better than my early efforts. I really really awful now

Ok I'll be perfectly honest or it's not worth commenting. There are a lot of songs like this around. It doesn't really stand out among them as special or different. The mix isn't too bad but it needs some balance and more punch. The vocalist is good but I find the oversouling and vocal ticks annoying, simply because so many lady voices in this genre sound like that, and it's not the true voice of the singer, more like a pastiche. You should work on the lyrics, sorry to say this but some of the lines are a bit corny, and it's the same old story we've heard so many times, try to tell it in a more original way. The cadence and chords are too bland, too common, try to make them more interesting and emotional with some harmonic, rhythmic or melodic devices. It's a good effort, but it needs a lot of work to make it sparkle. We've all been here mate. Keep at it and you'll get there with hard work and cultivating your imagination. Read inspiring prose and poetry to develop your lyrical style. Take your lyrics writing as seriously as the music. Best of luck man, I hope reading this didn't hurt too much.
So i was playing bass today and i basically came up with this fun little thing to do to train my ears. So basically, Get your music player and put every song you own on shuffle. 1.Select one random song. 2.Then roll a dice. 3.Skip tracks x number on dice. e.g. roll a 3, skip 3 tracks. 4.No matter what that song is even if it has no bass guitar, try and play along to it. But only listen to the song once through, so don't pause or replay it. 5.Then back to stage 1. I thought it was fun and a useful exercises. Lets here what you guys think.
What's the point of rolling a die if it's on shuffle?
Well I'd try the Retrovibe Ricky type. That one with the two MM pickups is a killer bass - and damned cheap as well for the spec. But if you want the real thing - well keep on saving man.
Hmmm, I tried a SH one of those last week in my local music shop. It had an action so high you'd need a f***ing visa to get from the strings to the frets, and it still fretted out on the top five or six frets. It was truly abysmal.
There used to be a rather cruel Yankee saying, along the lines of 'Those that can, do; those that can't, teach'.
Typical Yank rubbish. In English it would be 'Those WHO can, do; those WHO can't, teach'. -
Mine disappeared and now I get notifications of some, but not all, PMs.
Actually they still contribute something, since there is a component of string motion travelling along the length of the string, the component frequencies are damped, reflected or allowed to pass through the nut, and the properties of the nut determine which. Think its a tensile wave or similar. If you are convinced that fretting eliminates this as an effect, you'll be able to fret a note and cut the string between your finger and nut and not perceive a change in tone. http://www.edgeguita...rv/nut_geom.htm
That link is fascinating mate, thanks for posting it!
Agreed. My bloomin' musical instrument insurance costs me enough as it is already. Doesn't mean I'm cool with people nicking my stuff. I insure against damage primarily and hope that I would never ever have to claim on anything due to theft. Wishful thinking I guess. I suspect that post from that clown was out and out trolling though.
Very probably
Poor bastard, imagine how bad things must be for him to take to robbing a guitar. I'm sure the shop is insured.
I've just been leafing through my Storm/Hipgnosis book, "Walk Away Rene". What an incredible body of work, full of originality, inspiration and wit. His influence on my appreciation of the music is as significant as the musicians he created for.
I love that book. I grew up with it in art school, I still have a copy, it's a great read.
Here is mine.... The opening 55 seconds were conceptualised to sound like the random 'footsteps' of a moving insect and then the patterns that were created were then used as a melody. The bass parts came next and the others parts built using straight harmonies (e.g. thirds) linked to the melody or bass part. The piccolo part was a conscious counterpoint written specifically to offer variation and what I think of as the 'love theme' All written on Sibelius, transferred to Cubase as a midi file and populated with Miroslav Philharmonik vsts. I am still figuring out how to use the technology and the strings are a little too hot for my tastes but some of the sounds are marvellous (I love the pizzicato strings at the beginning) https://soundcloud.c...-palmer-1/creep
Rob, this eclipses what you've entered before (hope you take that the intended way ). It's really beautiful!

Interesting some of the neggy preamp views, and not much I agree with. I like the onboard controllability of a John East pre, I like the smoother sounds, the more produced sounds that I like anyway since I only use a POD and have no physical amp or cab in my signal chain. As to basses having a passive 'voice' that gets mashed with a preamp, well, I don't really agree with that either, your 'voice' gets mashed by the amplifier and its preamp, and the power stage and the cab and the mic and the desk and the FOH PA. Much more important is the player's voice. I suppose if you are happy with one or two tones and you play a certain way or you are a more traditional bassist, then maybe a pre is not for you, but bass has hugely evolved in certain genres so a pre can be very useful to achieve certain sounds.

It will be just like that pile of sh*t from last year. A daft idea that will last a couple of months before they sell all your data to another load of old sh*t.
I'm on my 6th set of pickups in my Silver Squier Jazz. I've tried standard Mex, DiMarzio model Js, original 30 year old 1970s Seymour Duncans, Wizard 64s, Road Worn vintage Alnicos and of course the original Japanese Squier pickups. Each pickup definitely had their own character and were, in my opinion, very different to one another. But If I wasn't a bass player I doubt I would be able to tell one from the other. What I figured out in the end was, that by fitting a John East pre amp to my Jazz, I could get the cheapest set of pickups sounding like the most expensive on the market and everything in between. So the moral is, don't fork out for expensive designer pickups, buy a pre amp instead.
Haha! I was reading your first para thinking 'why doesn't he just get a J-Retro'

No doubt meant as a heartfelt tribute to a hero of his, but it is dire.
I loved it, I thought it was really beautiful, such unfettered emotion and love for Jaco in that song "Do you know who he WAHAAAAHAAAAHHHHZZZZZ?!" Gorgeous.
