1. I find myself becoming more and more out of touch with my band recently. We are all good friends from way back, and me and the drummer are definitely a good match. Personality-wise and musician-wise. But, its just not clicking like it used to. I told them if this summer was as dull as last summer (eg barely any practicing and no new songs) then I'd be out. I don't want to....but after playing gig after gig for literally £0 i'm getting sick of it. The whole modern DIY punk/hardcore scene is full of fantastically fluent musicians, yet it still seems acceptable to barely cover petrol costs when we all work full time and make a hell of a lot of effort to get from our hometown after work to a gig in Yorkshire on time and with equipment. This happened last week. They didn't even pay our petrol, so it was like a very expensive practice. The PA was actually very professional, but they had barely advertised and were more concerned about their club night afterwards. We went home out of pocket and extremely tired. I don't know what is acceptable nowadays....but Im sick of the effort for not even getting costs covered. Because of the massive rush to setup that occurs at all of our gigs, there is no point in me taking my decent high end equipment anymore. I just stick with a house amp or cab and take my least expensive bass. Cables get stolen and water always gets spilt everywhere. Maybe im too old for the sh*t organisation and dirty venues. Who knows. What do you guys/girls think? I love bass; I will never stop that. But....im losing money in this band to daft little things that should be covered.
2. I bought a brand new SVT 810E cab....expecting it to solve everything. It just wasn't really that impressive. You had to have it very loud to get a good tone. That was a Vietnam cab....and yes QC wise it was pretty damn spot on! But...Ive never owned the US stuff. I dunno....that and the fact my friends Ampeg SVT 3 Pro struggles with volume has really put me off Ampeg. I won't be going back to them now...the cab has gone and the much nicer sounding/looking Aguilar cabs took its place. I tested a SVT-VR and I found it pretty dull. I was probably not EQ'ed correctly, but it did not have the wow factor for me. I think after a few years Ampeg will pull it back.....but I cant see myself tempted by their products again.
3.
That 62RI
I'd really like to know how these Reissues stand up against a Fender-type copy eg Lakland/Sadowsky. Any ideas? Cheers!
4.
I think it really has to be fender, thats the tone/feel that im after and only fender do the fender sound properly Never really considered the 75 RI......ooh on that note i wonder what the 62 RI is like??
What are those Sadowskys like?!! How do they 'compare' to Fender USA etc? See....I want another Jazz....and Im thinking a higher end Fender USA again. Like a reissue or custom.
5. I've realised I really get on with Jazz basses very well. Apart from the new USA line, what Jazz basses really shine? Obviously the Geddy is quite nice It doesnt have to be Fender....Lakland? I really do like the Fender tone....im hoping to just get another great Jazz. Any views on the USA 75 RI?
6. A damn good solid amp. 10 years ago you could never get 1000W with a decent sound for this price. Times have moved on!
7. Im a total newbie to Lakland basses, apart from a few I know about. I thought the DJ was passive?
8.
Just had it pointed out to me that some idiot is selling these new on ebay for £899 - I clearly should have done my homework before parting with £1100 Anyway I'm not a registered charity and refuse to lose a wad on this so it is withdrawn - I thang you.
Ah man! Its a bugger when you realise prices vary so much. Enjoy it...it looks wicked.
9. The Markbass combo looks wicked. How did it compare to those little Aggies? Wow at the 62!
10.
The Berg 115 is only the best 115 you can buy if you like it yourself - I don't. I haven't tried a Compact, but I have a lighter 115 that sounds great to me, so I don't need to. Forget the science and popular opinion and use your ears!
Agreed on the use your ears part. I was never fan of just 1x15 cabs....until I played my Orange cab. I know its not JUST based on the speaker...but plenty of review staff agree that it is a very good 1x15. And, after some careful testing recently, basically having a very well made port gives you a lot of low end. But then you have to compare this to a sealed 4x10...some people definitely prefer the sealed 4x10....its not science, its ears and preference. Thing is, within the modern alternative forms of music, I see a lot of players using non-ported cabs, because they like a really twangy mid cuttin cab with no fat end. Thats just preference. Half of the idea of a good cab to me is someone standing back and saying 'lets forget the science for a moment, as its made the cab sound pretty awful.....lets use our ears.' Which is no doubt exactly what many R&D depts do. Trial and error. Its part science, engineering, physics and art. Lets not forget that music is exactly that...an artform.
11. What are the stock Lakland pups like? As in Skyline DJ?
12. I realise we all have differing opinions. I am a fan of all the speaker sizes....more so 12s. But 4 10s, in a high quality cab, is a very ferocious bass sound. I love the force of 4x10s.... 15s to me always give you that nice fat low end....with some nice high end with the right speaker. Its still not complete clarity...hence why I so like 10s too.
13. Compact arrived safe and sound! First test run tomorrow @ Leeds Subculture.
14. Hey Yeah its quite a good manual! I remember seeing it on the Orange forum and checking a few bits I was unsure on. Thanks for the link....ill bookmark it this time.
15. I had the same as in my signature....this is another addition! A little addicted to cab buying right now. All totally different sounds. The Bergantino is a really good cab, and a keeper.
16. Stunning looking Stingray! I'd love it as a 5!
17.
Live Video of Wilhelm scream. Looks like Brians using an ampeg (Left hand side and close ups) What ampeg is that one?
I am a massive A Wilhelm Scream fan. Brian puts most technical bassists to shame. His recorded sound is basically his Stingray with a little dirt. That live rig is no doubt an Ampeg SVT-CL with an 810E I think. The thing is...Stingrays are so 'obvious' in a mix....its hard to emulate unless you get one. As he shows, even with fingerstyle, the Stingray just sounds aggressive and cuts through the mix...in a good way. I think he probably still does use Ampeg...or Mesa/Aguilar if he has jumped the boat like a lot of other rock bassists.
18. I've noticed a lot of Ampeg stuff going really cheap. Me thinks troubled waters lie ahead.
19. What are the stock Skyline DJ5 pups like?
20. Hmmm I like maple necks....but thats just me. The DJ looks nicer overall though. I was looking at the very same instruments....but maybe I should stick to a Stingray/Sterling 5 for the scale and neck.
21.
I know lugging heavy cabs around sucks, but I know within the first couple of notes in the first song of the set. I'm grinning.
This is what happens with my kinda heavy Berg HS410. But once you have casters, problem 3/4 solved. Worth every bit of effort. But, I must admit, there is probably lightweight gear I have yet to test I will like (eg hopefully Compact ).
22. I have no idea what would be right for you....BUT...what I can say is that I used to spend a lot on basses before I would consider spending on amps/cabs. I had the same rig for ages, (Trace 400W head and similar Peavy cabs to you). The Trace wasn't really a problem, despite being too massive. The problem was scrimping on cabs. Cheap cabs make your bass sound half as good as it could....now I buy cabs more than anything else. I love my LM3 (very clean) and Orange AD200b Mk3 (VERY dirty!) but neither would suit you. How about a GK 1001RB (cant rem the exact model number)? Get a really nice cab and that amp will be great, and VERY loud. Also, consider the Shuttlemax 6.
23.
Thanks Steve, Yes another cab on top will solve the problem of top end and being able to hear myself, I could just put my Ashdown on the Compact, but... That puts me right back where I was with the Aggie & Ashdown set-up, which was at times superb but inconsistant! It totally defeats the reason I bought the Compact, i.e to be a one cab solution.... which as it turns out, it isn't (for me). I am not knocking the Compact, for what it is, i.e... A loud portable 1x15. However, I was led to believe it was a full range cabinet.... It isn't! I thought it would replace both my cabs.... It doesn't! I want my Trace (or something similar) back!
Awww man....I feel bad for you! I hate it when you sell then regret. Even though I will use my smaller / lighter cabs more when I get them, im keeping my old ones. Even though thats being greedy.
24. I have the same MIJ/CIJ Fender 62 reissue P Bass. t was my first Fender and first real bass. Love it...lots of fond memories. Probably around 12 years old now.
25.
Cheers, From what I've read it does sound like seperate head and cab is the way I'll go. Guess I'll have to price it up, and get grovelling.
Good idea! You can get the LM3 for £607 or less.... Or get a LM2 secondhand.... High end cabs are definitely worth investing in!
