1. Ben's old Thumb Bass now resides with me. I have two Thumbs to go with my Std instead of two Streamers. Nice collection. ^_^
  2. Agghh, damn it. I'm not usually a Fender type but I love this. However, as I said on another thread, no more basses this year. Have a bump instead.

    Colours!

    Thumb Rests

Thumbrests still have a place in the modern world! I had one made for my Streamer Std. I'd strung the bass with flats and decided that I wanted a rest that was level with my pickup so I could play at the neck. Here's the result... 5. Never heard of these but it's a 7 string through neck with Bubinga wings for £369 BIN...... 8.
+1 to that. I played the natural 70s style one at the bottom of this link when I was Jon's workshop last. Amazing quality, handbuilt, and looks stunning - all for £650! http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/stock.htm
Wow. £650's a bit of a steal for those...
  9.
Would like to know how people have got on with the standard vs deluxe though.
The Deluxe will be active (if I remember correctly), so will sound more "hi-fi". It will also be made from nicer wood. As for the overall difference in playability/build quality I personally haven't found a great deal of difference, but bear in mind I've only been noodling in shops with these things.... For me a Fender should be a solid Workhorse, so I'd veer towards a Standard, but if this is to be a special present then you might want the extras. There's a thread on this subject here (assuming it's not your thread): http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=401571
Was considering a Sadowsky Metro or a Sandberg as alternatives.
I guess I'm one of those who thinks these are far superior (and much more befitting a special treat). Again, just my opinion. Cheers,
  10.
No Xmas for John Queays by the Fall.
Aghhh! Beat me to it!
  11. "No Christmas for John Quays" by The Fall. Always puts me in the festive spirit
  12. For the money I would much sooner consider a Sadowsky Metro, but that's just my opinion!
  13. MIA, MIM, MIJ..... Just get a second hand Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub and be done with it.
  14. For me it was a straight fusion of Punk, Electronica and Funk/Disco. As others have mentioned, the likes of Bowie and Roxy Music were already playing around with these in the 70s before Duran Duran appeared.
  15. ERB = Egg slicer. (Just because I can't play them, you understand.)
  16. Got to be worth £200 of someone's hard earned. Have a bump.
  17.
+1, but I don’t mean that in a bad or derogative kind of way........
Oh don't get we wrong, I like the look of Fenders too (esp. natural finish with a black scratch plate), I just find them pretty weird to play for some reason. Perhaps I'm just not "cool" enough, either!
  18. "There seems to be a link about being overweight and being in a metal band as well judging by the photos. " Nah, the link is between being underweight and being in an indie band.
  19. They're also pretty popular in Soul/RnB bands. The smaller bodies, whilst hated by some, are suited for wearing high in a manner that seems to be popular for bassists in those genres. Basically, for better or for worse, "Muso"=Warwick. Fender, on the other hand, have cornered the market in "Indie Cool".
  20.
Umm, I meant, originally played by the band itself, not by the bass player only... For sure, I know, it's Stu's bassy-line
Yeah, suspected as much, but thought it would be good to point it out!
  21.
So, as I was getting into Jamiroquai's Cosmic Girl (hell funky, gotta say...), I've devised to watch the original version, and spotted Jamiroquai's gig in Verona. Their bassist then actually was Nick Fyffe. He left the band in 2003. I was looking for his departure info, but could find it, so, still curious - why did he leave? Same problems with money [Zender's leaving reason..], or somethn' else?
Cosmic Girl was Zender's bass line, I'm not sure if you were aware of that.
  22. Great fun. I'd actually buy that for a laugh it it was cheap and local enough.
  23.
Well, they're certainly not some trendy scene band if that's what you're worried about There's a parody of a modern record company executive in one of their videos which cracks me up: "I don't see your balls in your jeans. Your hair's not straight ironed... where are the glasses and the bandana? And sh*t kid, we've got no hope for you..."
They could be a grower - they're great musicians, that's for sure. I do hear do some Dillinger Escape Plan influence......
