1. Same with mine, must be normal with a VVT set up. Just whack them both up full. Works for me.
  2. I used Joinmyband to get our band together. First just answering an ad to hook up with a like-minded guitarist then responding to a singer looking for a band and finally putting our own ad in looking for a drummer, to which we had many replies and tried 2 or 3 different drummers before settling on our current one. This all happened within the space of about 6 weeks, so it can work. There will always be the nutters and the deluded out there but you may get lucky as I think we probably did. Definitely worth a try tho.
  3. Bought an Ashdown cab from Dan. Really easy transaction, meeting up at a mutually convenient place. Top bloke and the cab is excellent too for a very decent price. Cheers.
  4.
In my case I'd had a classical music education, and had played guitar a bit as well. So I'd had many years of music experience including performing in public, so although a novice bassist I wasn't a novice musician. I'm sure there are quite a few like me.
Yep agreed. Studied music at A level, clarinetist and sax to a reasonable standard so the theory side already makes sense and I have been able to concentrate on technique and learning bass lines that I need to know for the band, which certainly comes easier with a good musical ear. Struggle to sight read from the bass clef tho after years reading treble so I just commit bass parts to memory and at the moment that is all I really want to do.
  5.
That's good, because in my experience nothing improves your playing quicker than being in a band, especially if everyone else is better than you - you tend to play up to their level pretty damn quick, in a way you just don't do by noodling at home.
Another endorsement for this. I have been playing about a year and like yourself i am self taught. I realised early on that I didnt just want to be a bedroom noodler so I decided at the back end of last year that 2015 would see me playing in a band of some sort. 3 months later, with the help of Join My Band I am sorted in a 4 piece rock band of mixed experience. The learning curve is steep but the confidence it gives you is enormous, especially once you start getting the approving nods from your band members and you realise that you must be doing something right. We recorded ourselves for the first time the other week at rehearsal and it sounded great and really tight. Then, regardless of overall technical ability and experience, you know that what you are doing works in the context of the band and that is what matters. I only expect to get better and more accomplished if I carry on what I am doing and challenging myself. Get yourself in a band - thoroughly recommended (if thats what you want to do of course!)

Compared to some of the amazing basses appearing on here I think I would be struggling to describe my Jazz as 'gear porn'. Harley Benton Standard series jazz, bought for £27 as a 'deko' item and modded with Entwistle pups and a KiOgon wiring harness. Total outlay about £80 and I have a nice looking and really great playing jazz. Sounds the nuts too! Anyhoo.........pictures............
  12.
I don't think there is a surf green Harley Benton Jazz Bass is there?
No, but if there was I think I would have one by now, deko or no deko!!
  13.
Is that a KiOgon wiring harness and Entwistle JBXN pickups? If so that's the same setup that I've got in my Squier VM jazz and it sounds awesome.
Yes to the KiOgon harness (great, and so easy to fit) but I only went for the standard JBX's rather than the neodymiums as I wanted to keep it really cheap. Still sounds great though. For the total price, I think it is amazing.
  14.
Ditto from me. What was actually wrong with the original electronics?
Good question, but to be honest I never got to the bottom of it. I tried re-soldering connections but that didn't work so with my electronics knowledge being what it is (non-existant) and also being rather inpatient I just decided to take the easy route and swap everything out (I was likely going to swap the pups anyway). What I may do when I have a spare half hour or so is connect up the original pick-ups to the new wiring harness (no soldering required) just to see if they work. At least then I will know whether I have a spare set of working pick ups that I can either keep or move on.
  15.
Sorry, by 'people have' I mean that 'some people have'. There have been other problems such as the silent jazz bass. My own deko (the PJ5 is my second) has some finish flaws, and the neck was maladjusted. But otherwise it's good. But others have received instruments that were perfect or near perfect.
Well, the silent jazz bass is no longer silent! New wiring harness and a set of Entwistle pups and it sounds great. Such a nice guitar to play as well and all, eventually, for about £80 including the original purchase price of £27. Really can't grumble at that
  16. John made a passive wiring harness for my standard jazz. Ordered wednesday........delivered friday! Great service. So easy to fit with solderless connections, simple fitting diagram and little screwdriver provided with the kit. Thoroughly recommended.
  17. My simple question would be where have you got your 'input' control set? Because if that is too low then you will not be getting anything like the full potential out of the amp regardless of how high you have the 'output' control. I am using an Ashdown Evo ii 180 and that is loud enough for small pub gigs in a typical pub rock covers band. Agreed as above on boosting those mids.
  18.
Mmmmmm. Is it me?
Well, it could be just you. But I think it might be me as well. Mmmmmmmmmm..........
  19. Just bought some Fender control knobs from Ian. So easy to deal with, really quick responses to messages and posted double quick. Top bloke. Cheers.
  20.
It's good to know that my posts here are still useful. With the time between listing and disappearance becoming shorter and shorter, I wondered if even racing here at full speed and posting was introducing too much delay.
Yep, keep your posts coming. Still hoping to get a deko acoustic bass at some point, although the chances at the mo would appear slim.
  21.
For me I would have to write a competitive programme to automatically buy deko instruments. This is always risky as it might suddenly order me 1000 banjos or something if there is a bug in it. RickyV, how is your Jazz bass? Is it making sound yet?
Good god, I wouldnt wish one banjo on anyone let alone 1000! Bass not making a noise just yet but I havent had the chance to test it properly yet with a multimeter and I dont have a soldering iron to carry out any repairs. Will probably purchase tomorrow. Have since discovered tho that the bridge grounding wire is completely disconnected form the back of the tone pot (or whichever one it was soldered to) but I wouldnt have thought that would cause the lack of sound. Would it? I intend to swap the pickups for some Entwistles anyway and I might as well upgrade the pots at the same time. Other than that the bass is fine. Adjusted the truss rod and now have the action nice and low how I like it. Will keep you posted.
