1. Thomann have just shipped my guitar after 3 days, I guess a lot of people are ordering stuff with money they have received at Christmas etc and with it being the new year as well I can imagine they have quite a backlog at the moment. Fingers crossed it arrives in one piece - its the first time ive ordered a guitar online!
2.
I have two items currnetly on order with Thomann. Their site says both items shipped Monday evening, but no tracking details at all on their site so I had to email them for an update. Thomann are under the impression my items have shipped, but the DHL site just says "The instruction data for this shipment have been provided by the sender to DHL electronically", so who knows where they are at the moment!
I ordered my guitar Monday and it still says on the website that my ordered hasnt even been processed by Thomann yet which is disapointing. Perhaps they have backlog from over Christmas. Will give them an email tomorrow if nothing happens by the end of today.
3. Welcome! I think anyone who frowns upon someone else's gear is probably a bit immature and probably buys instruments to impress others, so if anyone gives you any sort of gear snobbery ignore them. Instruments are a very personal thing so whether it costs £30 or £3,000 as long as it works for you and what you're doing then thats all that bloody matters! Enjoy the challenge and remember you wont wake up one day and be amazing at it - keep practicing! Basschat is a great forum with lots and lots of friendly users, you can get help with anything to with Bass all the way to how to deal with annoying neighbours.
4.
A lot comes down to the singer, though. If there's not an enthusiastic vocal after a couple of run-throughs, we might as well bin it and try something else. No matter how much some of us want to do it and have studiously learned the Randy Rhoads solo or whatever ...
Yeah this is a good shout, we play a few songs the singer is clearly not interested in and I wish he'd just say he doesnt want to play them.
5. We basically all pick a song each we want to do which is realistic to play with our band, try them out and drop the ones that suck. If it happens to be yours that sucks then you get to pick another one and we try again. The only difficult thing for me is finding songs that would suit a female singer and has enough going on for two guitars.
6.
I've never had any problems, ordered several times. Usually on Sunday or Mondays and its alway arrived by 8.00 am following Thursday, sometimes late Wednesday. Usually have it delivered to work and that may help as we have Parcel Force deliveries most days and are <10 miles from a big depot. Home delivery I suspect may give me problems.
I just ordered a new guitar from them yesterday so I am now really looking forward to Thursday...
7. Voted for by 100 blind bassists... it looks absolutely hideous!
8. I'm a big Yamaha fan when it comes to acoustics, for the price points each one I've played always feels like it should have cost more money. If you're buying blind though I'd suggest you go for the one you've played and liked. You wouldn't want to be disappointed!
9. I had a Fender Dimension Bass Made in China... I thought overall quality was fantastic for £300 and you get the fender logo, but the pickup on it I personally thought was pretty awful. But I guess I just didnt like the tone/sound. Everything was solid as rocks...
10. Hi All, Before I start I would like it to be known that I play bass and play guitar. When it comes to buying and selling gear why is it that guitarists are so eager and keen to be rude to one and other? Constantly on these Facebook selling groups I see guitarist bashing each other about gear and being generally downright out of order in some cases. What caused me to write this post is recently a girl put a guitar up for sale on one of these groups who clearly had no idea about guitars and listed in the description that it was 'pre strung'. Now I agree from a our point of view that is funny because that's what we all expect when we buy a guitar, but the amount of unnecessary abuse and bullying I witnessed in the comments boxes coming from guitarists was absolutely disgusting. It made me appreciate how nice and friendly this community is as we don't get this sort of silly behaviour - every dealing I've had with a bass player has been pleasant but with guitarists there's always some sort of problem or you're dealing with an asshole. I hate these types of posts I've just made as it is (as per the title) a sweeping generalisation of guitarists and I know its not everybody, but I just find the more I look the more I see guitarists being rude to each other and I just don't understand it...
11. I've got a Line 6 Spider, and its perfect for home practice, has loads of different sounds for different genres etc
12. We did a Christmas song at our gig at the weekend and our singer pulled out a piece of paper with the lyrics on it...it did make me laugh! Some of the drunk punters dancing tried to pinch it from her as well - should've learnt the lyrics!! It was hilarious!!
13. I love those videos, there was a Jessie J one I cant seem to find but it had me on the floor laughing EDIT This was it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlPsybmaNmA
14. Our drummer has picked up loads of really decent second hand flight cases from ebay as well for extremely cheap prices compared to buying them new. Theres loads on there its just a case of going through all the pages!
15. I was looking at practice amps today just for home use and came across this.... Thomann are selling them for a touch above £200!! 100 watts 2 x 12 speakers. The price is amazing and the reviews seem to shout and scream about it as well. This would be ideal for gigging as well if that were to ever happen to me. Anyone had any experience?
16.
Ive never used a stand on stage but I have been known to gig with an erection
This made me laugh out load at work when I'm not supposed to be looking on Basschat...thanks hahahaha
17.
One reason for NOT approaching the manager at the end of the gig is because, putting it bluntly, so many of them are piss-artists. At a very rough guess, I'd say that half the pubs we played this year the manager was as drunk as his regulars by the end of the evening.
Oh...so that's why they said they'd have us back...
18. It annoys me quite a lot how our band goes about it. We'll get the landlord come up to us after a gig and say something like 'yeah was really good, we'll deffo have you back' and the guitarist who 'books' the gigs just nods and says thank you then will carry on packing up the gear. Surely when the landlord is saying to you 'WE'LL HAVE YOU BACK' you reply with 'Okay great, lets sort some dates...' And they ask why we dont have any gigs booked next year...
19. Its something that makes my blood boil as well... Trouble is if people keep buying these over priced tickets then it will carry on unless they bring in laws or different methods of selling tickets. I say you should have to show your ID matching the name and address on your tickets or have to produce the card you paid for them on upon entry to the venue.
20. I think you should buy this one out of the options you've given because its more powerful than the others and should give you a better sound because of it. http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Belcat-25W-Electric-Bass-Amp/8C9 I'd personally ignore anyone telling you to play through a computer or headphones because you'll still need to invest in decent speakers/headphones and still not get a decent sound because they're not made for playing a bass guitar through...AND more importantly you wont experience the coolest part of playing bass and thats making the whole room vibrate!! As a beginner, you dont need anything fancy or amazing guitar tone because at the end of the day you're going to be playing to the mirror in your bedroom. If you then decide you like it so much you want to start gigging, then I would start looking at more expensive stuff because at the moment you dont know if you're going to enjoy it or not, so for now keep it simple, BASS > LEAD > AMP. Find some easy songs you want to learn (which is pretty easy to do on bass) and just play! Until you know what you're looking for and looking at I wouldnt buy anything secondhand unless you had someone to go with you that knows what to look for and know if somethings dodgy or has been abused. Keep it simple now, you dont want to have a headache before you even play the thing! Buy an amplifier...
21. Taking a spare bass means if a string breaks its just a case of putting it down and picking the other one up which takes seconds. If you dont do that then thats you out for the rest of the song and then you're causing a delay and an awkward cease in the entertainment, I would find that really unprofessional whatever venue you're playing and I know the people paying you wouldnt be very impressed either...
22.
On all of the basses I've owned, the one thing that makes the biggest difference to tone is the control next to the volume knob.
I agree, everything can be EQ'd to how you want it to sound with... Tone knob > Pre Amp > Amp There's enough twiddling to be done there! Especially with my Hartke Bass Attack pedal I bought recently I can have as much attack or warmth I so desire. Only reason I go with Rosewood fret boards is because I think they look nicer and I find it easier to see the frets!
