1. Its funny, I get this problem with my Squire Stratocaster. Its doesnt happen with any other guitar or instrument. Is that the guitar having a grounding problem?
2.
This discussion could and probably will go on for a good while yet, almost certainly no conclusion will be drawn and the OP will still have the same opinion.
Yes I agree to no conclusion will be drawn but it has altered my perception. From what I've read from the others is that a bass from a certain time period could mean something personal to them, whether they buy it because: 1.) They had a similar one back in the day that they regretted selling 2.) Having their own little piece of history in their hands 3.) Investments etc 4.) Just because it just played amazingly. I guess everyone has different reasons and tastes or money than sense! It also has reminded me of the Fender Stratocaster 60th Anniversary event I went to at PMT in Birmingham. The chap explained there about the methods and ways the strat was produced in the early days and that no guitar was the same as most were hand finished etc etc. So from that point of view of having something thats also one of kind I can see why people would find appealing. Its been really interesting hearing the various opinions!
3. Interesting! Hope that means theres space for new Yamaha bass to emerge!
4.
I'd take cover if I were you, pal! Truckstop
I dont want this to come across as me saying people who do buy these guitars are wrong, I'm generally interested in the reasons behind it. For example whether its been brought as an investment or for the tone etc like people have mentioned. Just in case I'm missing something!
And I would ask you Mr Starx (if indeed that is your real name), have you ever played a vintage instrument yourself??
Never! The price tags have done their job scaring me off!
5. Hi Guys, Its something I've always wanted to ask... Often I will see a bass dated from the above times for sale and people will be asking for thousands for them and people will pay it. To me I find it very confusing why someone would want to pay such a ridiculous price for something thats over 30/40/50 years old! It confuses me even more when something like an 70/80s Squire appears and they are going for a price close of what you could pay for a brand new USA Fender!! Is it purely down to the fact that its a rare collectable in some peoples minds? and with guitar being so old and so expensive, after you've brought it do you even have the balls to play it live? If not whats the point in having it in the first place? This is how I see it in my head... Noone would buy a car thats 50 years old and pay double/triple what it was worth new because of the fact that as things get old they break. Surely a bass would be the same? Then say you knew this and you change the electrics in the bass surely you've just paid thousands of pounds for what basically is two old pieces of wood bolted together? I just dont get it!!
6.
minus several million for pricing policy. No way will he fetch 200 quid for that thing.
7. allighatt0r it might be worth having a look at pubs in St Neots...Might be a bit far out for you but they have a fantastic music scene there and people purposely go out to see bands at the weekends there.
8. Discreet is the man you want to talk to!! He helped me out massively by sending be a rather useful guide to band promotion and getting gigs etc
9.
That's about the going rate for a good quality job tbh I recently had my GB IV refinished in Fender 'Daphne Blue' (about as retro as you can get!) by Brook Guitars (www.brookguitars.com) in Devon and it was £260 plus the cost of the paint. Results speak for themselves though.......... Before......... After............. Well worth the money!
That looks great! I'm really torn between a surf green and some sort of sonic blue... I really cant decide!
10. Haha i like it! I wish I could tell my guitarists to turn it down but I spend most of my time saying turn it up!!
11. I've got an Ashdown wireless system its not great but I never use it because I dont play many if any venues where I can move around anyway!! I'm usually stood on top of the drummer and whacking the guitarists with my headstock!
12.
I do think we tone it down a bit
Madonna needs to.... its like watching your mom embarrasing herself
13. Both of the guitarists in my band wear black everything and they dont stand out very much at all. Our singer wears some sort of pretty dress and its usually me thats stuck wondering what to wear... Do i join the guitarists and wear all black? My only fear is that we'll look more like session players rather than a band!
14. My girlfriends grandma plays piano and reads off sheet music, she once had a massive rant at me about how I didnt understand music properly because I told her that I learn songs by ear and work it out that way. It was a strange one because she seemed really offended by it! I thought it was always a decent skill to have...
15. I have to say I have to agree with this whole thread. Getting my black P Bass refinished to some sort of green!
16.
its not a 1969 or even a Fender for that matter.
What are the things to look out for?
17. Yeah I have a Musicman Stingray and it sounds a hell of lot more aggressive than my P Basses. They sound absolutely awesome if you really want to rock it! I play with 0.73 Dunlop 'Tortoise Shell' picks and have my EQ set as follows: Bass: 7/8 Mid: 7/8 Treble: 5 I find that gives me a warm tone but also cuts through as well, though I do play with a P Bass with the tone knob sorta just towards the warmer side. That sits well in our mix and puts a smile on my face as well.
18. This has now gone to barkin! Really nice guy, glad its gone to a good home - hopefully see him at a gig sometime!!
19.
Very generous of you
Its getting in the way, so if I can get rid of it and make someone happy at the same time its a bonus!
20. Hi All, I tried selling this for £20 on various Facebook groups and Gumtree but doesnt seem anyones interested. If I cant get £20 for it in my opinion it may as well go to a basschat member for free! So here it is.... It's fully operational and comes with a power supply. Basic EQ - Bass, Mid, Treble With CD IN (whatever that is) and Headphone in - I've never used either of those but I'm sure they should work. Its getting in the way now and I dont use it since I brought an Ashdown 40 watt practice amp about 3/4 months ago. I'm based about 5/6/7 Miles West of Cambridge - Don't want to post it because I will worry about it being battered about and wouldnt want someone to end up with something that doesnt work, I'd feel terrible. Thanks
21.
Common people is worse. Both in our set list
If I was a singer/bass player I probably wouldnt mind them because I something else to do as well, but because of how mono tone to song is anyway it makes it even more dull to play.
22. I'm going to throw Disco 2000 by Pulp in there.
23. Hello all! Some of you may remember I invested in a PINK pickguard for my black precision bass not so long back which you all confirmed looked absolutely disgusting (thanks guys). I dont really like the plain white on a black bass so was wondering what colour pickguards some of you guys use or have changed to that looks good.
24. I dont mind doing charity gigs because to be honest I need the gig experience but not a chance in hell would I lend my gear out.
