Tom Petersson's Hamer FBVIII - when things went weird.
NancyJohnson replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Bass Guitars
The thing is @dave_bass5, it wasn't a simple yes/no/maybe thing here. I have the money to buy this, but decided against it; it's really not all about me haemorrhaging my money on gear...I have a very tolerant wife and I discussed it with her. Would I love to own this piece of Hamer history? Yes, sure. Is this more about the chase as opposed to actual ownership? Quite probably. I also feel that once I had it, it would have become more of a vanity purchase rather than the workhorse I would want it to be. To be honest, in hindsight I'm glad I didn't fork over $10K for it, especially considering the add-ons (shipping/taxes etc.) and what the seller has it up for now (although it's not showing on Reverb any more). I will add that the seller is indeed a bit of an opinionated pink torpedo; it's amazing how many times I see his (frankly idiotic) posts on the various forums/pages that I subscribe to. -

If anyone is interested in an update, the seller is now offering this bass for $5.5k shipped. So, thats $2.5k less than he was prepared to let it go for to me and nearly half what he had it on Reverb for. What a tosser. -
UFO/Strangers In The Night (and in general).
NancyJohnson replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
I think the thing that stands out here is that for a general rock band, the material has aged really well. I extended the listening after I got home last night and even my wife asked what we were listening to (which is strange in itself). When I mentioned it dated back to the late 70s, she did actually remark that it didn't sound old, which I suppose is tantamount to the production, writing and what actually went to tape. Phil Mogg did have a certain charismatic swagger to his vocal delivery. -
I'm in a desk job that, put frankly, I fecking detest, but if there is an upside I can just listen to music and switch off from the general crap that goes on around me. Never really been a fan of UFO's studio output, but would honestly cite Strangers In The Night as being my favourite ever live album. I threw together a playlist of their studio output from Obsession to Mechanix on the train today and just lost myself for seven hours. It's fantastic stuff. Honestly don't know why this band aren't higher on my musical radar.

A first series Hamer Cruisebass; fell in love first time I ever saw one. Likewise the Spector Forte 4X (aka the Spectorbird).

The Warwick I bought in the thread just above this post had neck issues. I swear that the truss rod on the original neck did nothing (it just turned freely) so it went back to the Bass Centre and had a new neck fitted. In their defence, it was one of the very first bolt-ons (a five string LX, with a laminated maple and ? neck), so perhaps they were having teething issues, given their manufacturing to that point was all neck through, which might account for how easily they swapped it for a wenge neck without quibble. While your backstory might seem extraordinary, I can see why Warwick won't just issue replacement necks to all and sundry, especially given the points you've covered (sold unseen, your efforts to repair it); ultimately a business will cover themselves by offering a guarantee for manufacturing faults, not damage caused by the owner. Man alive, try dealing direct with Fender, they're exactly the same, so Warwick certainly aren't setting any kind of precedent here at all. Moving along, my Streamer had a brass Adjust-a-nut and I loved it; wouldn't have any issue fitting one to anything else. Everything else was fine - the bridge, MECs (J/J), the truss rod cover...all good. I bloody loved the bridge! Rock solid, easily adjustable. Question is, would I buy another Warwick, or specifically a Streamer. You know, I think I would, but I'd need to tweak things. It would need to be a PJ, it would need to be saucy/great wood and it would need to have black hardware. That said, I'm only on the market for two basses...if they came along, I'd pull the trigger instantly.

Well done! Yeah, Tour diary!

I've had a few basses that were clunkers or things that didn't do it for me; a 79 Fender Precision (heavy, dead spots, frankly useless electrics), Fender Geddy Lee Jazz (too shrill), Rickenbacker 4003 (long desired, great tonally, neck horrible), Gibson Thunderbird NR re-issue (arguably the one that got away, but issues tonally from the outset that took an age to resolve, by which time I'd fallen out of love with it). All this said, the winner of the worse bass I've ever owned goes to an Ibanez Roadster RB760. Man alive, it was the biggest steaming pile of poop I've ever owned/played. Worse still (and it saddens me to say this), I actually part-exchanged a Travis Bean for it. (I could cry.) It met a timely demise. I was playing somewhere in London, it kept on cutting out, so it just came off and I turned it into firewood. It wasn't even the end of the set and I didn't have a back up. If memory serves me, a few days later I went to the Bass Centre and bought a Warwick.

We're all different, aren't we. £3k burning a hole in my pocket; I don't suppose it matters if it's my birthday or not, really. if I could find one, a Spector Forte 4X ('Spectorbird'), a nice quality series one Hamer Cruisebass, or a Lull Thunderbird...

Years ago there used to be a store in Denmark Street that sold all these old Fender neck plates, decals, pots, bodies, necks etc. Nobody gave a damn about it back then as the basses these went on were just 10-15 years old. I dread to think how many people own a cherished 60s model, only for it to have been cobbled together from various parts in the 1970s.

Trigger pulled on the A/O amplifier. You know, I've seen enough in the Darkglass promos past and present to know whatever I've seen is reasonably accurate, so no qualms. Delivery 6-8 weeks. Will report back on delivery.

I've always like the design of these. I remember there was a fretless one up in the Wapping Bass Centre years ago with a brass fingerboard. Design being one thing, a guy I knew a while back owned one and it was so badly set up, I found it almost unplayable; the neck was bowing so far forward the action was a good 1/2" at the 13th fret. I begged the guy to give it to me for an hour to set it up, but nope, that was how he liked it.

I've always been curious about these. Are they scratch built or just bolted together from AllParts style parts?
-
This is what happens when they realise they have a rock god on the premises.

Amusingly, an Ultimate guitar stand ended up in my drummers stand box after a gig yonks ago. He passed this onto me, then a couple of years later I left it behind after a gig at the Half Moon, Putney.

I’m selling my entire rack/stompbox set up and quietly moving to something smaller. I’m not doing live or rehearsal work, so it seems a shame that it’s not getting any use. Happy for collection (I’m in Crowthorne, near Reading), if you want stuff shipped, I’ll need to work out how much. Cash on collection or Paypal gift preferred. Adverts are peppered over Amps/Effects for sale. Temple Audio Duo17 Floorboard/Soft carry bag/Power cable. It might initially be simpler to initially direct you to the Temple site here: https://www.templeaudio.com/ Temple Audio offer a board system with a neater solution than Pedaltrain and Velcro. Stomps get attached with metal plates that are attached to your boxes with adhesive pads and you simply arrange these Jenga-style to suit. It's very robust, beautifully designed and dare I say it, a clever system (and waaaay more fun than other systems I've used previously). The board has an undermounted HB PowerPlant psu, which as worked more than ably since I installed it; I see no reason to remove it to be honest, it works just as well as any other unit I've used previously. The unit has modular end panels to allow for different routing scenarios (I've just installed Speakon power and a small ¼” jack panel to aid routing) - just a quick note on the Speakon power thing, as it's a push and twist mechanism, the power cable needs to be into the Speakon socket before the cable goes into the wall. I have a long powercable as well (not pictured). The little silver box shown takes a little flexible gooseneck light that illuminates the board. Sale includes plates and other odds and ends. This probably owes me about £250. £125? £110? £100?

**Just the KORG Tuner left folks!** I’m selling my entire rack/stompbox set up and quietly moving to something smaller. Happy for collection (I’m in Crowthorne, near Reading), if you want stuff shipped, I’ll need to work out how much. Cash on collection or Paypal gift preferred. Adverts are peppered over Amps/Effects for sale. The Matrix Amp is for sale on the Amps For Sale section. Gator short 4U rack/PDU (SOLD!) Decent condition, in as much as it’s been out of the house quite a few times. I have a six-gang 1U power supply distribution unit screwed into the rear rack holes, which keeps everything neat and tidy. Happy to sell the rack and PSU together for £50 or will separate. Tech 21 dUg DP-3 (KEEPING) Ack, you all know what this is. Super clean. It’s never been out of the house. These are retailing for £255 – will take £200.00 £190.00 +P&P I have the original Tech21 tin for this. Tech 21 Ged2112 1U pre-stage (SOLD!) I’m going to be honest here and say that this unit works, but the voicing seems off to my ears. It does creamy fuzziness but not the clank. Might be my basses, don’t know. It went back to Rocky Road distributors who said there wasn’t anything wrong with it, Tech21 heard direct audio from it and they don't think there's an issue, but I have an option to return it to Tech21 for their guys to look at it, but to be honest, considering the expense involved, I really can’t be assed. I’ll sell this on for £225 and will pass on the agreed return number to the buyer with a caveat that you’re buying it in the condition I’ve covered above. Tech 21 Bass Driver (version 1) (SOLD!) Had this for a while. Just a brilliant little box. You know what this does. £110.00 seems rightish. Korg DTR200 1U rack tuner. (PRICE DROP) Very clean (racked since new). £75.00 £65.00 £60.00+P&P £50.00+PP
