1. For some reason the phrase 'made from military grade components' tickled me. Its a valve amp, so presumably we're talking about 1950's military components.
  2.
I'm crap at DIY.
I'll do you one for £60 inc postage from norway
  3.
I've been thinking about buying one of these: http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl...icker%26hl%3Den On longer journeys to gigs I reckon I could be warmed up by the time I get there. Anyone tried/tested/bought one of these?
There was a thread a while back that mentioned these... cant find it though €84 (about 75 quid?) seems a leetle steep for a block of wood with strings and a couple of frets. Why not make your own? or look for a cheap crappy bass, rip off the head and most of the body to make a steinbergeresque shape then you can practice fretting in the bus too. I'm usually driving and do the tappety tap on the wheel, but I tend to do the pianist finger warm up exercises rather than drum patters as I can do them without thinking too hard about it and your fingers are lovely and supple and ready to go after about 5 mins.
  4.
Is a doublestop, simply playing two strings at the same time at the end of a bar...hence the double stop maybe playing a C and an octave higher C?
yeah, not restricted to octaves though. any two notes on any two strings are a double stop. Its old terminology from the Double bass (and violins, violas etc...)
  5.
My ears are burning.
I would not be so ungallant as to name names, however none of the people I had in mind have been seen on here other than in Youtube clips.
  6. I think Edward's analogy to cars is a good one. There are so many variations out there that a definitive list would run to lots and lots of pages, and then the choice of amplification gets into the equation with all its associated tone colouring, and then you can start adding effects to tweak the tone even further. And then you can get into lengthy discussions about playing techniques, each one flavouring the tone in its own way... and all of that is subjective anyway, AND its extremely difficult to try to describe the nuances of tone using spoken / written language. Its not an impossible task, but I'm not surprised that you couldn't find anything conclusive in your search. No need to apologise by the way. Don't feel embarrassed about asking noob questions either, we were all new to this game once and the vast majority on here are only too happy to help Cant really help with your question though , after yonks and yonks of playing I'd say that your little list of tones is pretty much on the button. I wouldn't get hung up too much about it though. I've heard people on here get fantastic sounds out of crappy basses (and to be fair I've heard people make basses that cost thousands sound like they're made of paper and string.) To coin a basschat cliche, 'the tone is in the fingers' Keep reading, you'll pick it up in no time.
  7.
wow, thanks for the prompt and knowledgable replies guys.....and I thought there was only P or J to choose from...maybe there should be a another definition, but can't think of a short name for side-by-side dual-coil humbuckers SBSDCH's is a bit of a mouthful!
There is, it's the double buck ($$) I love my 375, it gets as much play time as the P (it would get more, but its got too many strings for everyday use )
  8.
I did some googling last night and everybody was saying normalisation is a mug's game, ...
sounds a bit odd, as that's what happens with every track anyway, i.e. balancing the volume to mix with the rest if the tracks. I'd just get on with it, normalise all the brass tracks then chop and paste as you see fit. Who cares if its 'not what the pros do' as long as it sounds right.
  9.
[snip...] SteveO: Maybe you should start an scandinavian thread just for us scandinavians?
Ahhh, I have to confess that I'm an immigrant to scandanavia. I'm only here for the snow, the trees and the lovely blond ladies
  10. I don't name my basses. IMO it's weird, but then again I haven't named the cat either. She responds to 'cat', and if I start calling her something else it might induce a multiple personality disorder .
  11.
Had a dream last night that I played a gig in a village hall, and there was a bass on the stage when I arrived, so I used that instead. It was a Fender Jazz, sunburst but the neck had been repainted light green. Even stranger, embedded in the upper horn, there was a small keyboard, about the size of a Stylophone. Lovely low action and I liked it more that I thought I would. I've no idea what that means. Any Dream-analysts out there ?
It probably means that Rolf Harris is your real father. But look on the bright side, he's probably loaded what with all the TV stuff, so ask him and he might get a custom one made for you in time for xmas.
  12.
A few of the large online stores have had the Markbass Super Synth "in stock" since late summer with a note that it can be delivered within 2 days. Not sure how they're managing it when the pedal hasn't even been released yet, maybe not even mass-produced yet.
My moneys on it being a pack of lies to get you to place an order. To be frank a live stock level is not hard to implement. We managed to get it running in the distribution depot of a convenience store chain that could handle more than 10 million transactions a day with more than 5 thousand different products. It took about a month to tie in the 50 or so stores and get it working properly and was so simple to use that it could be operated by someone who had no training at all. +1 for canceling the order and dropping a line to the customer services manager to let them know why. I have to say that I rate Thomann's stock level system as one of the best from the POV of a customer. Saying that, I rate them as the best internet based music shop in the world for value and service. (not that I've tried them all of course )
  13.
bear in mind that not all of those show up on a PC
good point. will do a test. ♭ ♮ ♯ EDIT: Aha! thought it was too good to be true. Only the flat, natural and sharp symbols are showing on my pc. bit of a shame. wait a mo, can we not have custom emoticons on this forum? can we not set up some musical symbols? this is a musicians forum after all (if you exclude the occasional posts about drumming ).
  14.
This is an easy thing to say, but good settings for your amp would be switched off, unplugged, and stood next to a better amp. I'm being flippant, but there really isn't much you can do about the sound of a 15w practice amp. It's a chipboard box with a cheap tranny circuit and a really weak speaker. I assume you're using it on your own (15w in a band situation is all but pointless), so if you want a better sound I'd recommend using a set of headphones if it has a headphone output (the saving grace of a lot of cheap practice amps), and if not, but funds are an issue, maybe consider selling it and getting one of those little headphone amplifiers.
Its all subjective but I'd ignore this (sorry max ) The peavey microbass I use is only 20W, yet is more than loud enough for my practice room. OK, so its 30% more powerful than the 15W you have, but don't get drawn into the quest for big wattage until you're looking at a stage rig.
  15. Heres some more if you want. These can be found in the character pallette / special characters menu item on your mac (once open, change the view "all characters" then you can find musical symbols in the menu) Dunno if you can find em in the PC character map though although anyone can use them by typing in the &# numbers followed by a semicolon: 𝄪 Double sharp &#119082 ♯ Sharp &#9839 ♮ Natural &#9838 ♭ Flat &#9837 𝄫 Doubleflat &#119083 𝄞 Trebble clef &#119070 𝄢 Bass clef &#119074 𝄡 Tennor clef &#119073 𝄆 𝄇 Repeats &#119046 &#119047 e.g. to get ♭ type
& # 9 8 3 7;
without the spaces
  16. Were going to have to have a headcount of the scandanavian basschatters one of these days, I think we may even outnumber the welsh. Welcome aboard Johan.
  17. Doesn't seem that bad, its only 20 cm longer and 5cm wider than my bass case which is easily handled by little old me. Aluminium so it shouldn't be too weighty either. Maybe it was a bit hard to handle because of the lighting rig that he had in it??? If I wasn't 700 miles away I'd be having a punt on this

    Basswood
Is there a 'basswood' tree? or is it a fancy name for chipboard? the squiers are made out of this...which other guitars are?
I was looking at this when we were talking about pine basses a few weeks back. On this side of the pond we call it lime (noting to do with the green fruit) It has a density similar to that of pine. thats as far as I got with it.
  19. The only time I have ever seen a fretboard with any damage was on an old acoustic that had been sat uncovered at the bottom of a garden for years, and even that did not look as bad as the photo in that article. Personaly I think it's marketing bull in order to sell you some stuff (but I am a cynic.) To be fair though I have been unknowingly following the advice in the article:
How often do I condition my fretboard? Every time you change your strings
I changed them once, and wiped 10 years worth of gunge off at the same time. If I ever change the strings again I'll probably give it another wipe.
Monsters of Rock 1988 Helloween Megadeth Guns n Roses David Lee Roth Kiss Iron Maiden still have the tee shirt.

I was there.Never forget the stampede when Guns came on,seriously dangerous. I was wondering why Megadeth were so bad,but Mr.Mustaine nearly died afterwards apparently. I was a fan of Helloween, but I wasn't too impressed with them there. The rest were good, and Maiden played a blinder
My first as a fan too. If I were to list my favourite bands at the time, they were all playing that festival. Great times.

    2 cabs, 1 amp?
If your wanting to just hear a bit more at head height, just get a crate or something strong to put the cab on top of.
Stick the 610 on the 210, just don't plug it in. :B
  22. do you mean at 0:58? They're not even plugged in, possibly a statement about bands who have massive doom rigs that are just for show or something.
  23. Doing something similar a few years back we found the 'Now that's what I call Xmas' compilation invaluble as all the crappy songs that everyone knows are on there, and only a small handful venture into the heady heights of 4 chords and beyond. Heres amazons track listing to save searching...
  24.
bump
give us a clue mate. what bass is it from?. what's up with it. crackly noises?, not turning?, no output in certain positions?
