1.
At the risk of injecting yet more life into this zombie thread, let me lay this urban myth to rest. From interviews with Trevor Horn and other engineers who were working at SARM at the time of FGTH, they were unhappy with the playing on "Relax" so they got the Blockheads in to re-do the instrumental parts. While the results were better technically they didn't have the right feel - does that make NWR a poor bass player since he didn't play what was required for the song ;-) Eventually the track was assembled in Page R on the Fairlight. Some of the individual notes used create the bass line might have been sampled from the Blockheads session but that hardly makes it NWR's playing. The actual performance came from whoever did the programming - most likely one of The Art Of Noise.
Fair enough. It doesn't even sound like there's a bass anywhere on Relax.
2.
I also remember some band somewhere that had to re-record all the bass parts laid down by the original bass player because they were so bad. I think it might have been a Trevor Horn produced track...was it Frankie Goes To Hollywood?
It was FGTH, they'd got everything but didn't play too well & the Blockheads were his go to session guys.
3. Man that's pretty! Does that finish negate the need for oiling, or would you still oil over it?
4. I've not had to play it for years, but Shake Your Tailfeather was always a blast when we nailed it.
5. I'm not sure I could bear to think of it being so far away! Seriously, I'm happy to look into it, other people manage it so I'm sure there's lots of advice on here I can search for if you decide to go for it. If you have any questions or need any specific photos just let me know.
6. Thank god for that... I Was sick of looking at this and contemplating the look on my Wife's face if I didn't resist!
7. I bought a fiver as my sole bass back in 1989, back when I owned one bass at a time, and playing rock/metal stuff it was handy for drop tunings and big rumbling riffs under the guitar parts. Having got used to it I've not bought a 4 since. It's really proved useful over the past few years as I work with a mandolin player with a broad baritone voice. The mandolin is quite high, his voice takes up a large amount of the middle ground, and I find that working in the really low end helps keep out of his way.
8. This one? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/269161-nanyo-bass-collections-are-annoyingly-good/page__view__getnewpost
9. That's just insane... it's a very strange market at the minute!
10. The Mrs bought me a Tascam GB10 trainer, and I like that a lot. The sound of the bass through it isn't fantastic to be fair, but being able to load mp3s, then slow them down or change the pitch, and the facility to loop sections has proven really handy.
11.
Nick - go for that pint first
That good eh? Looks like I have a plan then!
12. Slightly off topic, but assuming you had Swindle, Magda and Snarky Puppy, what was the running order? If Swindle is opening I might go and find somewhere that doesn't serve pissy lager at a fiver a pint for an hour first.
13. Rebellion innit? You grow up with parents whose record collections cover Nirvana, Motor head, Marilyn Manson and Slayer... Where can you go from there. Can't go forwards much from there, got to move sideways. Alternatively, just maybe, the kids are smarter than they appear. Either way, bring on tonight at the Apollo!
14. I'd have loved to have seen this, but by the time it was announced I already had tickets for Snarky Puppy on Tuesday, and getting a two day pass to abandon the Mrs with the kids isn't gonna happen. Gutted really, and I hope it's as good as imagine it will be.
15. ^^^ What he said ^^^ I could listen to an evening of that!
16. Thanks chaps! My apologies for the half-arsedness of my advertising by the way. I'm up to the neck in family stuff (happy stuff, not nasty stuff) and work is mad busy at the minute, but I'll get some more pics up as soon as I get chance to sit down at a proper computer. I have emailed pics to those who have inquired from my phone, but will embed some on here when I get a minute. I also keep making the mistake of playing the damn thing, and thinking 'ah well, if it doesn't go I'll just have to keep it'. That B string will be hard to let go of!
17. A great day, educational and inspiring, and good friendly fun to boot. Many thanks to all who made it happen!
18. Slight change in my bringing, in that I only got around to dropping the Bass Collection into Guitar Aid on Thursday so that's out. I'll be bringing a Corvette Standard in its place and desperately hoping I get there in time for the setup workshop... cos boy does it need it. Also, while digging my stuff out I discovered a Zoom 506 multi effects thing I'd forgotten about. While It must be nearly 20 years old, it's moved house twice as many times as it's been out of the box. Minty fresh, instructions, etc, and I've just stuck a battery in it and it's all spot on. Older tech, but would suit someone who fancies the occasional dabble with effects... almost vintage! Would that be suitable for the raffle?... happy to throw it in if so.
19. Lakland Skyline 55 01 by Nick, on Flickr If I could get it past the Wife I'd keep this just to sit on a stand, but I can't justify keeping anything I'm not using. The combination of 19mm spacing and 35 inch scale is beyond my ageing hands, which is a pity as my technique is so much cleaner on this, and the B string is fantastic. It's in really nice condition, it's used, so obviously not perfect, but I can't really find anything significant to photograph. Plenty of info out there about these, often upgraded apparently, but I've found it to have an excellent range of useable tones as it is. Everything works as it should. Based in Harrow, work in central London. Not averse to shipping to mainland UK, but I've never done that before so would be seeking advice, but most on here seem to state 25 quid, so I'm guessing delivery would be around that on top of the price. I'd prefer local obviously, just to be sure the buyer is buying the right bass for them. Plus, while I've been here a while, I'm hardly a prolific poster, and given this is my first for sale post, face to face would be more comfortable all round. Trades wise, my main squeeze is an old German Corvette active 5 string, which I get on well with, and I'm seriously considering going for two, one with rounds & one with flats, so if anyone has one of similar value that might be an option, fretted/fretless... all considered. May potentially consider others with similar spacing. I've put up the only pic I have online, but I have a few more on my phone that I can email on request. Happy to answer any questions. Nick
20.
Is it the nail varnish?
Might be!
21.
Out next week!
I never buy BGM... but I'm prepared to break the habit if they've got Steve Lawson on the cover!
