1. Steve Harris & Nicko McBrain. Obviously it's a niche thing stylistically, but they're almost telepathic. Known for spending a great deal of time on practicing together without the band. Probably not wide ranging enough to qualify as 'best ever'but they do their thing wonderfully.
2.
Now Then by Stiff Little Fingers...even the band don't like it but I think it is definitely one of their best......Bits of Kids, touch and Go and Falling down being my pick of the tracks
I'm with you on that. I even like the cover of Love of the Common People on there. Albums - I bought Spilt Milk by Jellyfish back the early 90s, and to this day maintain it's one of the best pop records ever, despite every I introduce to it telling me it's sh*te.
3. That's just ridiculous. Can someone please take this to save me from an expensive divorce?
4. Limited as my understanding is, in the context of the song 'bad' is out of time and/or out of tune... so basically, me!
5.
At the risk of injecting yet more life into this zombie thread, let me lay this urban myth to rest. From interviews with Trevor Horn and other engineers who were working at SARM at the time of FGTH, they were unhappy with the playing on "Relax" so they got the Blockheads in to re-do the instrumental parts. While the results were better technically they didn't have the right feel - does that make NWR a poor bass player since he didn't play what was required for the song ;-) Eventually the track was assembled in Page R on the Fairlight. Some of the individual notes used create the bass line might have been sampled from the Blockheads session but that hardly makes it NWR's playing. The actual performance came from whoever did the programming - most likely one of The Art Of Noise.
Fair enough. It doesn't even sound like there's a bass anywhere on Relax.
6.
I also remember some band somewhere that had to re-record all the bass parts laid down by the original bass player because they were so bad. I think it might have been a Trevor Horn produced track...was it Frankie Goes To Hollywood?
It was FGTH, they'd got everything but didn't play too well & the Blockheads were his go to session guys.
7. Man that's pretty! Does that finish negate the need for oiling, or would you still oil over it?
8. I've not had to play it for years, but Shake Your Tailfeather was always a blast when we nailed it.
9. I'm not sure I could bear to think of it being so far away! Seriously, I'm happy to look into it, other people manage it so I'm sure there's lots of advice on here I can search for if you decide to go for it. If you have any questions or need any specific photos just let me know.
10. Thank god for that... I Was sick of looking at this and contemplating the look on my Wife's face if I didn't resist!
11. I bought a fiver as my sole bass back in 1989, back when I owned one bass at a time, and playing rock/metal stuff it was handy for drop tunings and big rumbling riffs under the guitar parts. Having got used to it I've not bought a 4 since. It's really proved useful over the past few years as I work with a mandolin player with a broad baritone voice. The mandolin is quite high, his voice takes up a large amount of the middle ground, and I find that working in the really low end helps keep out of his way.
12. This one? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/269161-nanyo-bass-collections-are-annoyingly-good/page__view__getnewpost
13. That's just insane... it's a very strange market at the minute!
14. The Mrs bought me a Tascam GB10 trainer, and I like that a lot. The sound of the bass through it isn't fantastic to be fair, but being able to load mp3s, then slow them down or change the pitch, and the facility to loop sections has proven really handy.
15. Now that was just showing off!!!
16.
Nick - go for that pint first
That good eh? Looks like I have a plan then!
17. Slightly off topic, but assuming you had Swindle, Magda and Snarky Puppy, what was the running order? If Swindle is opening I might go and find somewhere that doesn't serve pissy lager at a fiver a pint for an hour first.
18. Rebellion innit? You grow up with parents whose record collections cover Nirvana, Motor head, Marilyn Manson and Slayer... Where can you go from there. Can't go forwards much from there, got to move sideways. Alternatively, just maybe, the kids are smarter than they appear. Either way, bring on tonight at the Apollo!
19. I'd have loved to have seen this, but by the time it was announced I already had tickets for Snarky Puppy on Tuesday, and getting a two day pass to abandon the Mrs with the kids isn't gonna happen. Gutted really, and I hope it's as good as imagine it will be.
