1.
That is really appealing. It looks like 19mm spacing at the bridge or so as well? You're giving me GAS...
Yup, 19m to match my Elwood. If this plays as expected I hope to get down to just these 2, covering everything I do... well maybe a fretless down the line... y'know... just because...
2. My big thing has always been the type of line that's so integral to the song that if removed the song would be lost. There are others (Foxton and Norman W-R spring to mind), but Bruce Thomas's work with Elvis Costello just blows me away anew every time.
3.
Nice, mine will be sort of like that pickupwise, but in an elwood with a thinner neck. And a lot more red.
The red stained Ash? That's a lovely finish, Bubinga's Elwood looks great in it.
4. Exactly how I Imagined... my first ever P type!
5. Hope for those counting the days... I got my sofa shot this morning, about 4 weeks ahead of schedule. Just my luck! I'm in bloody Canada at the moment, so still have to wait!
6.
Not specific to bass, but if you found Wooten helpful, Zen Guitar by Philip Toshio Sudo says a lot of the same things in a simpler way - it's a thin little book full of single lines that take a lot of thinking about (as you'd expect): http://www.goodreads...5397.Zen_Guitar A slightly different angle, Guitar Zero by Gary Marcus is about his journey learning to play later in life - he is a cognitive psychologist and uses that as the storyline on which to hang a really good clear account of the latest understanding of brain plasticity, late learning, and the psychology of music. http://www.goodreads...453-guitar-zero The goodreads site is often a good place to find books similar to ones you like - check out their chain of suggestions from either of these and you might find others.
Thanks, there looks to be some smart stuff on there!
7.
Standing In the Shadows of Motown https://www.amazon.c...n/dp/0881888826
Thanks. That's been on my wanted list for ages. Again it's a physical book though, so maybe one for my Christmas list.
8. It's not just D'Addario, lot's of manufacturers make an extra long version for longer scale lengths, remembering my Lakland days, I'm pretty sure most normal long scale strings were too short. A Spector guy would clear this up, but I'd get a tape measure out. Taking into account distance between the bridge end and saddle, and between the nut and the capstan I'd guess super long would be fine.
9. A taper should sit on the saddle. but not the nut. I'm sure someone more familiar with Spectors will be along shortly, but I'm guessing you have a 35mm scale length there, so from a D'Addario perspective you need their 'Super Long', or equivalent in other brands.
10. Thanks. Ear training is a great idea, again probably something I should be looking at. The book appears to be available in physical form only, maybe one for when I get back.
11. It is something I should probably do. I have a few sight reading quiz apps on my tablet too.
12.
Not so much a theory book per say, but ANY scored music will help. Also good is Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry.
Thanks. I'll take a look at that one. Regarding scored music, I'm a recent reader, I can plod through relatively simple exercises but still easily get lost working through stuff in my head.
13.
Guy Pratt - My Bass and Other Animals. Good lively read and a great bass player.
I read that earlier this year, it's a great read.
14. True dat! I've no doubt I will when I have access to WiFi.
15. I have a couple of long, dull flights coming up with a week of no Bass access in between. I need bass books (electronic) that cover approach, theory or technique that are more theoretical rather than packed with exercises that require having an instrument there to make sense of things. Alternatively, any decent bassist biographies/autobiographies. I've read Wooten's The music lesson, and despite it's weirdness found some really helpful stuff in there... similar books would be cool. Any recommendations gratefully received, cheers!
16. As above, an acoustic bass won't hold its own unplugged against other acoustic instruments. I almost get away with it with a gentle octave mandolin player friend of mine, but if he digs in I'm lost. I do like mine though, and with a bit of amp support it's OK... a bugger for feedback though. Bearing in mind mine is a fretless, it's wearing D'Addario Black Nylons and I really like the thump they give.
17. Yes it is bolt on. My bathroom scales say 7.9lbs, and they're usually pretty accurate. Balance is nice too for a Warwick too which helps how it feels on the shoulder.
18. That is incredible... Ridiculous, insane, but incredible! All you need now is for ABBA to reform!
19. Maybe. It's really tough to predict. Given that it plunged this week chances are there'll be a bit of a rally in the short term.
20.
Mine is 15. I am at week 4 today. <cries> At the rate the pound is plummeting I don't know if I can afford it by the time it is ready!
I ordered in August, shortly after we voted for economic and societal suicide, and given the already rising cost asked if I could pay in full. It left things a little tight at the time, but it's saved me a bit. On the upside, when we're the outcasts we're going to be, they'll be dearer and rarer.
21. Mine was 12, so I reckon I've about a month left... Tick... tick... tick...
22. Bumpage! Would also consider trades for lighter weight amplification stuff. As much as I love my old faithful 1 x 15 Trace Combo, getting down the stairs from the flat is a manual handling hazard waiting to happen, and I could probably pull together a few hundred quid to move towards a more portable option that would give me similar volume and bottom end.
23. I've no particular desire to get another Lakland, but even as I'm halfway through the wait for a custom build I still find myself looking in the marketplace and thinking 'ooh, I could do something with that'. It's this damn forum, it's like a wonderful disease... I'm thinking of asking for a special account that restricts me to Theory & Technique, Events and Tutors for Hire. The sections that will actually help me improve.
