1.
I suppose it depends how often the average punter wants to go and see a Thin Lizzy tribute band. It would appear the venues think no more than 4 or 5 times a year ;-)
Obviously our growing band of followers don't fall into this category...thankfully
2.
And that's exactly why your other gigs have been cancelled. Why pay to see one Not!Thin Lizzy when you can see another for free?
I get this if it was a few days apart but two months?
3.
Seems a bit cheeky to me seeing as they're a cover band as well.
Exactly this. There is no affiliation with Thin Lizzy as far as I'm aware - Black Star Riders continue to tour with the occasional official Thin Lizzy gigs for good measure. We are taking it as a HUGE compliment as we already know of punters who have elected to come and watch us for free in/around derby in lieu of forking out nearly £20 to watch Limehouse play locally the next night.
4. As a guitarist turned bass player I've always played with a pick and I've never even thought about any of the above re grip, pressure etc...it's just how I play
5. TBH The pub is a tiny little venue with the band playing next to the entrance/exit and everyone walking through your space...but it's the principle of the thing.
6. As some of you may know, I play in a Thin Lizzy cover band (definitely not a tribute act unless Phil Lynott had a goatee!) and one of our guitarists contacted me yesterday to inform me that The Fishpond, Matlock Bath has cancelled two gigs this year - 16th April and 10th December - at the request of Limehouse Lizzy who are playing the same venue on 25th June. We play the pub on a free entry basis whilst Limehouse play the much larger ballroom as a ticketed event. I could perhaps understand if the dates within a month although I'd still be a bit ticked off, but I more than a little angry about this as their date isn't until 25th June. The same thing happened last year, and we were also prevented from playing at The Flowerpot, Derby with a similar exclusivity reason. Has anyone else come across anything similar? My mates have said to take it as a compliment/flattery!!!! I may have a few jokes at their expense at future gigs about this one. As Simon put it - "Performing another artist's work whilst protecting it for their own financial and ego gain"? Seems that way to me too.
7.
I can see I'll have to do a note-for-note demonstration! Neil
I was hoping you'd step in and end this once and for all! Thank you!
8. I really should go back to using my IEMs - I started to find that the lack of time to miceverytign up for monitoring only (pub band, vocal only PA) prevented getting a really good mix but usually the backing vocal mics put enough guitars in my mix to work from. I use a stereo unit with a 'blend' adding as much bass as I want to a vocal only feed from the desk. It's a bit odd being so isolated from everything in a pub but you get used to it. I have a couple of AKG PP416 mics that I keep threatening to use as ambients and feed them into my monitor mix. Perhaps I will give it a try at the next suitable gig.
9. We played a gig in what can only be described as a micro-venue - maybe 15ft wide and 60ft long...that was it! Tiny rural venue and tbh I feared the worst but I was pleasantly surprised as some of the locals had seen us at another venue and pestered the landlord to get us in there. We also had the added authenticity of a sax player for "Dancing in the Moonlight" which was exceptionally well received. I had a bit of a howler lyric wise...I'm blaming a bad fall and bang on the bounce snow boarding recently. (In reality it's too little time re-acquanting myself with the material after a few weeks away!) All in all a top night and I'm looking forward to the return later in the year.
10. I had a Diamond Omen IV for a while - lovely thing but didn't really have a use for it once I joined the Lizzy tribute so parted with it. I think it's know been renamed the Damien?
11. My listening is almost exclusively done whilst on my daily rail commute so it's either iTunes or Spotify for me - it's more of a way to kill time enjoyably for 120 mins each day rather than to indulge in some sonic out of body experience!
12.
I have, a fender rumble 500 with a TE 1 x 15 underneath it, but some bassists on here reckon you shouldn't mix speaker sizes, I say use your ears
Not had a bad comment on my sound yet - the rest of the guys in the band think it's spot on too!
13.
I too have a love of 15" speakers, I know I know that there's plenty on here that say you can shift just as much air with 2 x 10" but a 15 just sounds gutsier to me
Why choose between them? Have both!!!!!
14. Think Lizzy return to the live stage after a short break and are playing at Dixie's Arms, School Road, Bagthorpe, Nottingham NG15 5HF It all kicks off around 9:00pm so get yourself there for some great renditions of your Lizzy faves. It's a small venue so get there early - it'll be standing room only!
15. I managed to blag a couple of semi-flight trunks - 18" x 10" x 10" or so - perfect for the band's power, speaker, instrument and mic cables. My own speaker and power cables go into the front pocket of my MiBass bag.
16. Hot on the heels of a great gig at nearby Long Eaton last week the Think Lizzy gig machine rolls into Chequers Inn, Main Street, Breaston, Derby, DE72 3DX on Saturday 6th Feb playing your favorite Lizzy tracks from 9:15...ish!
17. Not at all - I'm probably not as fussy/precious about it as other 'better condition' used basses I've owned, even though I bought the relic'd one new tbh! New dints/dings/dents will sit comfortably with the 'old' ones!
18. I have Black Stone Cherry plus Shinedown and Halestorm Friday, followed by The Cadillac Three on Sunday with a Think Lizzy gig shoehorned in between!
19. Think Lizzy will be back out doing what we do best on Sat 30th January at The Bell Inn, Tamworth Road, Long Eaton, Notts, NG10 3GR. It all kicks off around 9:15 so if a night of Phillo's finest tunes appeals then get yourselves along.
20. For me it would have to be Def Leppard's Hysteria
21. I dinged a brand new Les Paul on a table corner at a gig the first week I owned it! I'm not careless with my possessions but these things do happen. My Patrick Eggle guitar has a strap rub mark through the lacquer and stain to the bare wood which I think looks cool. My Limelight is already relic'd but I'm not fussed if extra mark/dings appear - as is already the case. Similarly my Tokai is 30 years old and has a great collection of scars. I've always thought that Fenders look good when they're a little roughed up, but Gibsons look better when pristine!
22. Last gig was an odd one: the band were definitely rusty but it seemed we could do no wrong despite our best efforts! I forgot lyrics, drummer had a 'mare on a new track, endings messed up. None of it mattered as every track was enthusiastically applauded by the good-sized crowd. I swear the average punter hears the original recording in their heads!
23. Happy new year all! Well after a short break to allow for festivities we're back blasting out Phillo's best tunes at one of our favourite venues - The Crown Inn at Heanor, Derbyshire, DE75 7AH. A late bar and a 9:30pm start for this one.
24. we had one major blow up in June/July 2014 - I left, my replacement left them in the brown stuff in September 2014 with imminent gigs so I got invited back as a short term stand in and the four of us have never had a cross word between us since! We all chip in carrying and setting up gear, give each other enough stage and sonic space. It helps that we're all a bit older (I'm the youngest at 49) and there truly are no prima donnas in the band.
25. Well - our first "lemon" of a gig. TBH We'd played the venue before and I wasn't convinced about a return - my fears proved to be valid! First set went down reasonably well but the 2nd set turned out to be a paid rehearsal. Hey ho...such is life!
