1. Thanks about the info on the 15s - I will search for the Barefaced and BFM threads. Must be a myth I had heard about the response times - I don't remember where I heard it! I heard a bass player this last weekend playing through a 1x15" (or was it a 1x12"?) and a lovely 4 string Spector with Bartolinis in it and sounded incredibly clear (middley, even) so my misconceptions were very definitely cleaned up. Some of the preamps secondhand will run both clean and overdrive channels (Ampeg SVP Pro I think? And the Ampeg SVP-BSP which uses transistors for the overdrive channel). I have a SWR Interstellar Overdrive and that lets you blend the clean and overdrive sounds, so although you can't run each separately you can get a very versatile sound out of it.
2. Yes, the two limits are thermal limits for a speaker and the mechanical limits, where the speaker hits the end stops. That is why all practice room bass cabinets are wrecked because fools go in and turn all the EQ to max. Ideally decent cabs will have crossovers in them to stop high signals even going to the tweeters, but perhaps I am expecting too much! I did ask Bergantino where the crossover was in a HD210 but they didn't say.
3. Sold a Hiscox case to Alan, very friendly guy. Hope you manage to survive between your two Marshall guitarists. Wear plugs!
4. Sold a Comfort Strapp strap to Andy, easy transaction. Thanks!
5. Bought a Bergantino cab from Mark. He was very friendly and met up on time, and put up with driving round Tewkesbury looking for a decent place to park and exchange. Great!
6. http://www.eminence.com/2010/11/providing-the-proper-amount-of-headroom/ According to that informative link, the rule in pro audio is to provide at least twice as much amplifier power as the speaker's continuous power rating. Amplifier clipping is what blows speakers apparently! This is complete news to me because I always thought you should UNDERPOWER the amp to avoid overdriving the cabinets but in truth it is better to use a more powerful amp, just not turn it up full.
7. I think Pat Badger from Extreme used to biamp too (as did Entwistle) but Sheehan does it where he sends the raspy midrange (no bass) overdrive signal to a 1x15" and the low deep no treble signal to a 4x10". This is opposite to how most people would think to do it, where they'd send the deep bass signal to the 15" and rasp to the 4x10", but his explanation on a Hartke video is that the single 15" driver will have no phase problems as it is a single point source for the sound compared to the 4x10" where the distortion through there would not be truly in phase, so not as cutting/biting. It sort of makes sense but I wonder how fast that 15" can move for reproducing high-end distortion. I wonder if he has changed his sound over the years because if you listen to early Mr Big compared to the recent Niacin album, there is much less fizz on his recent sound, typically.
8. Hello This is from a practice in our three-piece, recorded with 3 drum mics and DI'd guitar and bass. Reverb was added afterwards (and panning, compression, univibe on guitar etc.) in Logic. I recorded it and played on it, then mixed it afterwards so it's not a professional job by any means. The waveform was added to the video a something to watch, as you can't just upload music to YouTube... Enjoy! Warts and all mistakes left in, including bass section at the end. On the same YouTube channel is some other recordings from practices, including two Satriani songs (Crush of Love and Surfing with the Alien) but forgive the mistakes on them as they were the very first time we had ever played them. Comments and criticism more than welcome, as always. Thanks Rich
9. Bump. I can deliver as far as Birmingham if necessary.
10. Thanks, very informative. Did it manage to transfer all the nuances of playing, not just low notes? I wonder about the price of the other "kinetic transfer" platforms available (http://porteranddavies.co.uk/KTPOverviewPage.html) ? That page specifically mentions transferring dynamics and harmonics - did the Tecamp one manage that?
11. Did you find that it transmitted down to the floor? What size board did you use? I am tempted to save up for one for practicing at home without driving my wife insane with repetitive phrases. And also to avoid distressing the cats with slap pops.
12. I thought there was only two types of speakon connectors - the black ones and the green ones. The black ones take ordinary speakon connectors (the ones that are the safest because you will never ever short the contacts out whilst removing them, so it is technically perfectly safe with non-tube amps to disconnect the speaker whilst it is in use!). The dark green ones also take Speakon connectors but have a larger slot in the middle for taking jacks. These are rarer connectors and I would prefer to never ever use jacks for connecting speakers, particularly if a clueless person puts in a guitar lead as a speaker cable (which would not be thick enough to act as a speaker cable). As for the connectors themselves, the official ones are Neutrik but you can get cheapo speakon cables from ebay etc. that DO not use official Neutrik connectors and may be of variable quality; I think Neutrik licence the use of them?? I have bought speaker cables on ebay that had rubbish quality speaker cable and non-Neutrik connectors and there are far flimsier than they should be.
13. Anyone know where you can get the George Clinton / Parliament set from? On the other thread mentioning Vintage Trouble there is a link to a big Vintage Trouble video but I was wondering where/if there is a downloadable George Clinton set?
14. Thanks discreet! I am in two minds about selling it but I need the space. A really really really great cab, bombproof and loud (with an appropriate amp). Someone buy it and experience instant joy!
15. I am selling my Warwick WCA 411 Pro cabinet that I bought many many years ago when production was still in Germany before the big expansion and these were made in China, so it is a German made cab. I bought two of these cabinets but discovered that I am really not the rock star I thought I would be (hahaha far from it) so this never gets used (other than for occasional practice). This has been used for about 4 gentle gigs and then used for home practice only in all the time I have had it. So, I am not using it and need to get rid of some of my gear. It is a 600W RMS amp with custom Eminence speakers. 8ohm so you can pair it with another cab and most amps will drive down to 4 ohms (so two 8ohm cabs in parallel will mean death by volume). It takes 800W peak. Has a HF horn (adjustable on the back). This has the speakon and XLR inputs on the back instead of the later jack connectors (which are far more dangerous than Speakons, as you can short jacks; you can't short speakons). These are mentally loud when driven by an appropriate amp. I used to use a Warwick Pro Tube IX which didn't drive this enough, but with a RH750 or Genz Benz STLMax9.2 these cabs really shine (that is, they are like instant death). I have only turned up to 4 on my STLMax9.2 with my other one of these before I got scared from the trouser flapping. I have the castors but they are not currently fitted. No dents, bashes or anything other than a mildly bent XLR push tab, the rest like new really! Carpet covered so easy to vacuum. I will miss this cab but it must go. I will be unable to post this as it is 39kg but I will be willing to drive a few junctions up or down from junction 6 on the M5 as I live just outside Worcester. 16. I am selling my Vox AD50VT guitar amp as I bought it secondhand the other year to try and improve my guitar playing but it turns out I am truly abysmal all round, so it has to go! It's a modelling amp but features a valve somewhere in the signal path (a real miniature push-pull power amp) so doesn't sound like the scratchy scratchy ouchy ouchy sounds that early Line6 and VAMP modellers did. I managed to get a decent sound out of the AC30 and US Higain settings, in particular. It's a 50W amp but has a variable control on the back so you can turn down the wattage and play at sensible levels. I do not have the manual but have a PDF (plus, it's pretty self explanatory). There are a few scuffs on the tolex here and there (some pictured) and it appears that the rear panel was removed at some point (not by me!) so there are a few screws missing, nothing you can't replace though. I am located just outside Worcester so am happy to drive up/down from junction 6 on the M5 to meet up and deliver locally, or you can pick up. 17. No band! Those guys on the folk stages have a vocalist with a laptop, and on the main stage we have a vocalist with a laptop.... EDIT: An angry vocalist with a laptop. And a million lights.
18. Congratulations! How do you manage to get such a deal?
19. Very interesting situation. There is some fuss being made over Swift's photo demands in contrast to this. She demands exclusive perpetual rights to her photos from concerts, so the photographers cannot earn. Which is very similar to the fuss she was making regarding not earning from Apple's trial period. Interesting situation though. I wonder if it'll significantky change the industry, given that it is a potential shortcut through middlemen? Unless I am mistaken? (I usually am). Edit: also, Apple CEO typically gets paid $1 a year, for tax purposes I think? Steve Jobs only earned a measly $1 a year.
