OK, so not *strictly* a 'brilliant' bass line - certainly in the pocket on the original version of the track - but when in the hands of a Bass MONSTER such as Mick Karn, this version makes it in to my top ten favourite songs ever I reckon! Oh - and Brian May on guitar is just.. just... well, I can't hear the sax version ever again! ha!
Terrific catchy bassline
YES!! Love this Bass line - especially the cover version by Gwen Stefani and her merry men. Really nice bass line to play too!
Just had a twiddle with my new TC Electronics Nova Dynamics through my rig and I'm very impressed. It looks a bit complicated but it isn't really - it's very smooth, very clean and transparent and extremely versatile. I decided not to go for the Markbass Compressore so I was kinda torn between this and buying my third Multicomp but in the end, I followed Mark at Bass Direct's advice and so far I'm glad I did. I think Dood's right, my initial impression is that it is better than the Multicomp but I'm going to have to wait two weeks to try it with the band because that's the real test innit.
Hey buddy! - I'm glad you grabbed one for a workin' over! - I do agree with you - on the face of it - the Nove *does* look complicated with it's lovely buttons, knobs and flashing lights, but in reality it's just one pedal doubled up - so you only really have to learn what half the controls are! A little bit of tweaking will be required - but I found that as soon as I found the bit in the manual about sorting the input level (cos my basses have a red hot output) I was able to tame things pretty quickly. I bet it will sound amazing through the Accugroove cab!! - I'd like to hear how you get on with the rig!

Well, my completely boring method was to have a keyring on the handle of one cases. That's as good as it got!
Dear Ros, I've just seen your post and would like to express my sincerest condolences to you personally for your sad loss and say thank you for taking the time to reply to all here. I think it's safe to say Simon will not be forgotten here on Basschat and as you've seen (and already know), he was a very well-respected and valued member of the bass community. I'll also look forward to news of whichever charity you decided to nominate in Si's memory. A tribute gig is a great idea, too! Best wishes to you and your family, Steve (Stingray5)
I would like to echo the same sentiment.
Great bit of kit this, I had one for a while, it had to go though, as i just didn't have enough headroom with the output of my warwick. Wish I still had it now I have a passive in my arsenal again! Good luck with the sale.
Really? not enough headroom? How do you mean? I'm intrigued!
If you're into James Brown it might be worth checking out the drum video about Jabo Starks and Clyde Stubblefield.... I'm pretty sure it's got Fred Thomas and Fred Wesley on it.. Here's a couple of clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdFK-nVys6s...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iM7ZAg7Xm0 Class!
I have been very lucky to have spent an evening with Jabbo and Clyde and also watched them live at a drum clinic. They were brilliantly entertaining and gave a real insight to the life of being the rhythm section for JB. At the end of the evening after sitting down and chatting about all things musical, I went to say my good-byes and shake both their hands - Instead, to my surprise I got a massive hug from Clyde!! They were both so humble and affable. I like to think some of that funk rubbed off on me! - Well, it certainly had a profound effect, that's for sure! Brilliant guys. I wish I had my camera there that day!
You were glowing about the TC C300 some time ago (I am not stalking you). How does the TC Electronic Nova Dynamics compare?
I reckon they are both brilliant!! The C300 obviously has a lot more on it; Everything that the Nova has and the inclusion of source specific programs etc, which makes it the best compressor I have ever used for extended range bass. The Nova Dynamics is obviously a cut down version, but still has two triple band compressors or two full range compressors, or two noisegates -or indeed any two 'blocks' together. Again, the addition of Parallel compression that you do not find on a lot of compressors, including the Multicomp makes it fantastic for bass if you want to even your signal out but still have control over your dynamics. I'd prefer the C300 for attention to detail, but the Nova is great because it's a pedal and you can sling it in a gig bag for studio compression anywhere. I'm a big fan of TC, they are bringing out some great quality products.

Yeah, I really love the sound of the spoon bouncing of the strings. Really good!

Bassists that sound like guitarists playing bass
Dood replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
I think some aspects of my playing are guitar orientated. I play chords, strum, finger pick 'acoustic guitar' type patterns, tap and play harmony parts for guitar solos. That on top of all the more Bass related techniques on my 6 & 7 string Basses. I make a point of mentioning that, as I have those extra strings there for that reason. So I can make use of other techniques. As with any technique or style - I choose to use it to enhance a song - not to waste time on some ego-boost mission. They are all legitimate techniques and should not just be limited to one instrument. Hell, if I thought it would sound good I'd have a cowbell strapped to my bass! he he! (ok.. I was jokin'... no more cowbell) -
There might be more to it than just feel. I think it's a shame though that these guys couldn't be up front and honest - that is always how I try and do business. Don't let it get you down though, up and at 'em with a new gig!
I agree. I'd really hope that if *I* wasn't 'performing' as expected, then someone would at least tell me! To be gutless and come up with a crap excuse like splitting up a band is beyond woeful! If your singer was *your* mate to start with and he's turned upon you in the same manner, then I would say he sucks as a friend too.
If the cabs were being driven by the same amp with the same EQ I could quite easily, but then you'd hope so wouldn't you?!
Hey Alex, nice to see ya on the board! Yeah, that's kinda what I was getting at in my comments above. I've owned a couple of MB heads and obviously the Hartke LH is my current rig, so I know the differences here in my front room - but it's alot more difficult with two unknown cabinets in an unknown room! But yeah, I like these real world tests! -

There are obviously millions of posts and threads supporting the MU, but do we have any ISM members and can anyone offer any real world comparisons as to why one would be a better choice than the other? I've about 20 'net pages open in front of me including various discussions, but would love to hear what the Bass Playing fraternity have to say on the subject. (Because I know I will get a down to earth and insightful reply!!) Dood. -
I sold my Boss ODB-3 to Jason recently. Great comms and a pleasure to do business with. Nice one!
