LH500 -> Super Twelve vs MB sa450 -> Bergantino ae410 comparison...
Who said anything about fair? It is a real comparison of two different rigs playing the same piece of music in the same environment recorded from the same position, albeit the rigs were next to each other. I like your logic, not that I'm saying you're right or wrong though, its just exactly the way my mind works too!
He he!! Yes, I like your style! Doesn't have to be fair! Good game, good game! - I love the overall tone of both of the rigs actually - they cut through with the added dirt. What are you using for your drive? -

Actually - I haven't read the text properly at all! - One amp with one cab and another amp with another. Hmmm... not really a fair comparison given the tonal differences in the amplifier's character. The MB has an active EQ circuit that boosts bass around 40hz - the LH500 is all passive and can not add that kind of bass girth to the tone. Hmm, given that - I reckon that the MarkBass head is tone two and the LH500 is tone One. -

OH!! That's my fault for reading the text and not the title!
"OK a couple of weeks ago now Alex was kind enough to lend his Super Twelve, Big One and Avalon U5 and power amp to some friends of mine who are looking to get a first decent gigging bass rig together. "
So I assumed by reading the above that you had a Big One and a Super Twelve! lol's! -

Ahhhh!! I'm game! Firstly, it's going to be quite difficult to tell given the positioning of the recording device and the resonance of the room I can hear which is muddying the sound a bit - but actually, PLEASE don't take that as a criticism - it's a plus point for your comparison - because that's pretty much what it's gonna sound like in a gig environment anyway to a listener isn't it? Makes it all a bit more fun! Ok, to my ears, track two sounds a little 'plummier'. The bottom end blooms in the low bass and the middle seems a tad less agressive - although REALLY hard to tell with distortion involved. Sound one is a little bass shy in comparison and found that the odd bit of articulation cut through. - Now - if this were listening to some sims of a speaker cabinet using this information, I would say that the 12's were the first track and the 15 of the Big ONe was Track two. Given Alex's attention to detail and design - it has been a difficult comparison. -
A a system admin at work (amongst many other roles ) I can entirely see where you are coming from here. If one person can have multiple accounts, then why can't everyone? Chaos would result. Schizophrenia as well possibly. And this is before any real account abuse or lying occurs.
That's a plus one here too. In a previous employment I was a domain admin (yes, amongst many others too) and the rules for account ownership were tight exactly for the reasons (and many more) above. There is no need for a second account anyway. In most people's eyes it makes a user look dishonest and gives the wrong impression to begin with.

A really useful post David! Thanks! - I like the TubeSim effect. I can see that being useful for taming an aggressive bass tone and sit it in the mix without having to resort to faffing with EQ for ages!

So there I was working out some Google Searches for a new web resource and I happened across this little chestnut! '!!!The Signature Bass Club!!!'
There's even more choice in wooden headless basses than I imagined. If the singlecut doesn't make a huge difference to tone I would imagine that most of the other designs would be lighter, which is a good thing for the back.
I don't think you'd notice the slight weight difference of the extra bit of wood on the upper horn to make any difference. Most basses have quite a slim upper horn anyway. I actually think that the singlecut is more comfortable than an upper horn. It's something you have to try out to understand! That flat back just sits against the body a bit nicer!

I actually quite fancy trying one, having found myself smitten with my HyDrive big rig!

The LH500 is a single power amp head and the output connections are in parallel. No extra output can be gained with the Y cables described above. The LH1000 has two 500W power amplifiers in and can be bridged. (1000W RMS into 4 Ohms)
No, the better option is to buy cheap battery tester/reasonable multimeter (look on it as an investment), leave the battery connected, plug a lead in, and then check the battery voltage. The voltage on an unloaded battery will be higher than a loaded one, sometimes by a large margin (depends on the current draw of the circuit).
Actually, I just had a thought - if there is no lead plugged in when you take a reading from the battery terminals - then that will be an unloaded circuit as the ring and shield terminals won't be 'closed' or 'shorted' to complete the circuit. So I guess to get a loaded circuit, you'll need to have a lead or dummy plug inserted as well! Just a though, info' really.
I've seen these advertised too in Bass Player and wondered, but it does seem a tad expensive. I'm sure there's a perfectly good scientific reason as to why not, but why can you not achieve a similar result by putting the probes of a battery tester or multimeter to the tip and sleeve of a lead plugged into the jack socket?
Hmmm, i'm having trouble understanding *how* this device can make a true reading based on the picture. Firstly, I see a *mono* 1/4" jack plug in the picture. This means that the probe is trying to take a reading from the tip and sleeve connections from the bass output. There SHOULD NOT be a DC current available at this point. It's a bit like trying to take a battery reading for your car via the speaker output of the car's stereo. It just aint gonna happen. The correct way to derive a current reading from around 90% of active bass circuits would be to take a STEREO jack plug and use the RING and SLEEVE terminals, NOT the tip. (The tip should be audio only) Inserting a reading at this point will put a meter in series with the active circuit and thus taking a current (not voltage) reading. Now this is where I have my second point of issue - There is NO WAY, based on a current reading alone that this device can form an accurate reading of the 'amount of time left till your battery expires, mate'. Does it know if I am using rechargeable batteries? Does it know what the capacity of my batteries are? Can it tell that '9V' Rechargeable batteries only charge to about 8.4v nope.. nope... nope... The better option is to buy one of those cheap battery testers from maplin, physically remove the battery from the active circuit and test it stand alone, certainly not whilst it is connected to another circuit. daft daft daft . com!

Rich, the news has shocked me and I can't believe it. I met our very own 'OldGit' just a few times and can wholeheartedly say his warmth and humour couldn't fail to win a stranger over. A real gent and a fine human being. I first met Simon and Rich whilst picking up our new basses. There was some fun jibes and banter that day; the memories and pictures will mean more to me now than ever. A tragic and very sad loss. Rest In Peace Simon, you will be warmly remembered. xxx Rich, if there's anything I can do - I'm sure I speak for all here, we're here for you mate.

Now that is not the kinda thing that happens to an awful bass player! You are cool as f*ck!!
Has anyone had much experience of headless singlecut basses? I know Sei make a model like this and I would imagine that the extra mass and rigidity would make up for the lack of mass that a headstock would bring, but I've never had a chance to try one.
I have both a headed singlecut bass and also a Headless double cut. Both made of exactly the same materials. They also have exactly the same electronics. Tonally, they share certain similar aspects, but they *do* sound different as instruments. Does the 'singlecut' part of the body offer much to the tone? Well - more of the body is directly connected to the neck of the singlecut, so probably a small amount of tone is transferred through the join. However, changing the pickups or electronics would make FAR more difference to the voice of an instrument than the small section of wood in the top corner of the body does. Not that you'd ever be able to tell - as two instruments of exactly the same spec will always sound different. I've had a pair of 6 string Tobias basses. The only difference was the colour - but both had an obviously different voice. I think if on was a singlecut, it'd make no difference whatsoever. Finally, it'd be wrong for me to leave the thread without mentioning my good friend, Mr Jon Shuker. Here's the 'Headless' gallery from his website enjoy! ;o) http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/hlgal.htm My Shuker basses:
His technique is poor in the left hand, and if any teacher taught you to play like he did, they would be doing you a massive disservice.
I think a lot of 'great' bass players have errr 'unique' playing styles that may not be the preferred technique as part of a tutor's regime. If that's the gauge to what an awful Vs good Bass Player is, then I concede that one lolz!
There are many players on here who are equally competent and capable as he his.
Yaaarp, I can play DT stuff. Hmmm.. am I awful?
Having seen him live with Dream Theatre I was completely unimpressed and bored. I'd gone to the gig as a freebie and went with real excitement about seeing this so called super group and super bassist. Just incredibly dull. It's like paint by numbers for progressive rock! Or paint by numbers for bassists!
Again, is that not just your view of the whole band - that's not Mr Myung being awful. I remain, as ever, light hearted.
