  1. is it the one from ebay for 135 squids BIN? I was waiting for my payday.... :[ very good basses, especially with those pickups. Jazz on steroids. I would coat the fingerboard with something hard and rock roundwounds on it
  2. if you like the sound, I wouldn't change the pickups. You can add the outboard preamp, or even a pedal like Boss Bass EQ for example, to gain some volume. What model is it? The pickups should be the same as in German Warwicks, although the soapbars from the cheapest Rockbass Streamers weren't used in Warwicks too often... If they are the P and/or J pickups, silver logo indicates the passive "Dynamic Correction" pickups. Gold logo is on the active pickups.
  3. ok, that looks seriously promising price-wise
  4. haven't seen a word about it, they advice to ask "your local dealer" about prices and availability. My local dealers usually learn from me about existence and prices of most basses :/
  5. thanks :/ GAS attack. I only wanted the fretless (only knew about it), now I want all of them. The Elite and the signature one will be expensive though (I guess). The LTD Frank Bello is something like 800 quid, and it's also based on the same PJ format.
  6. I'm wondering if there are any Basschatters having any valuable experience with, or owning these basses? They seem rather nice for about the Squier CV price bracket, a PJ config that I like, 21 frets, choice of rosewood and maple fretboards etc. How's the build/assembly quality? Finish is disputable of course... Apparently, there's also an unlined fretless coming this year, and THAT is seriously interesting at this price. As long as they actually are good instruments, which is what I'm asking about. Anyone?
  7. "technical ability" means nothing more than being able to play exactly what's needed/appropriate for the song. Is Stanley Clarke a better bassist than Peter Hook? Possibly. Would he be a better bassist for Joy Division then?

    SOLD.

I'm actually trying to find some spare bit of budget now - always wanted one in this colour! Payday seems so far away, and I overstretched my budget around xmas too much... I've got a BB415 in Raspberry Red now, my favourite bass ever tone-wise. And that's saying something, have owned american fenders and german warwicks before. I want a 4-string now, with the same sound. And this funky colour

    SOLD.

If you still have it in, say, 3 weeks' time, I'm taking it.
  10. Nobody knows really except for the band. They refer to the bassist as Mr X. There is a word that he wasn't a very pleasant person to deal with. Stuart was in Paris at the time, having some sort of relationship emergency with his then-girlfriend Milla Jovovich. Another well known Jamiroquai song from the Zender-era that was recorded by another bassist was "When You Gonna Learn" from the first album. It was recorded before Stu joined the band, and it was Andrew Levy of The Brand New Heavies on the bass.
  11. another vote for Yamaha. There is someone here trying to sell his BB605 for many months now, I think it was £170 or 200 with a Hiscox case. Beautiful bass with a very interesting preamp. I've had one of them (still in my avatar), one of the best basses I used.
  12. I'm pretty sure it was some sort of all-valve Trace in the "Travelling Without Moving" period. Like, V8 or something like this. On the first album the sounds were much more sterile, don't know what it might have been. There's a Hartke combo and cabs in the "Space Cowboy" video, but then that version was recorded later, he didn't play on the album version of the song.
  13. oh no, I've only got a 4x10 and enjoy playing in London sometimes. On top of that, I'm a Pole. I'm not worthy.
  14. Spent some time with Paul Turner this weekend in Hook End. He might show up, if they come back to the country on time with Jamiroquai (they plan to return on Friday night, before the show). It there's any delay, he won't come. If he does though, there may be a very special one-off product announced in a very unexpected booth...
  15. Shiiiit! Can't afford it now, just bought shitloads of photo gear... But I'm buying it for myself for Christmas if it's still around. Which I wish you it isn't, good luck with the sale!
  16. GMR have always been an entirely Polish business, only recently they've moved their international division to Denmark Street. When I first heard of them they were also the exclusive distributor of Warwick basses in Poland, and at that time all hardware and pickups/electronics in GMR basses was Warwick/MEC (I've owned one of those). Older instruments had all kinds and brands of hardware in them (I've owned one of those too, with Schaller hardware and EMG pickups). Newer ones, after GMR ceased distributing Warwicks, used the whole variety again. I don't know what GMR use as "standard" now, but any non-standard hardware shouldn't be worrying, especially in an instrument made for the Polish market. As for Solartron - I've been a user on Polish bassists' forums years ago and remember his username, very highly regarded person there. There is a slight chance that I may be mistaking him with someone else, but iirc he's a designer and maker of very high-spec and really innovative electronics. Not dissimilar to what John East is doing here, only with an even less commercial and more tailor-made profile. Something in my head associates him with the Zakrzewski basses (vide Janek Gwizdała's new fretless), but don't quote me on that. Someone grab it, awesome bargain. edit: Merlin pickups are also very very good, I know the maker personally, he was a co-founder of the band Vader (for all you metal fans) and has been making pickups for decades. I know people who swapped their Seymour Duncan and Fender CS pickups for these and are very happy.

yeah, they have a very different kind of charm, I loved my BB605 though (which unfortunately I realized after selling) and will have another one in future.
  18. modified as in having been modified - I can't remember the exact name, Active Deluxe Jazz? They come in white with matching headstock, black ditto, sunburst without matching headstock. Shiny black ebonol fretboard, no markers. No pickguard. Popular pimping platform. The bass in the video looks to me more like that Squier than like anything Fender is making.

  20. if MAG has the same "shape" button as ABM, it has to be pressed in for a flat-ish response, depressed position gives a big low boost and scoops out all the mids.

4StringFortress - ask Sean here what bridge he used for his orange 415 - he was quite satisfied with the results. Personally, I'm thinking about an inexpensive bridge in style of Hipshot A-style that Thomann have in stock. Other option is (and I may go for it eventually) the 5string Babicz bridge, which has a thick and heavy backplate and an easy-release string anchoring - this last thing is particularly important to me. Definitely think about getting a string retainer (such as a Hipshot) for the B string at the headstock, to increase the angle on the nut and improving tension. The bridge swap will only improve things if the string anchor point is further back (from the saddle) and/or lower (closer to the body surface) than the original one. Personally, I want to get my 415 refinished in some funky colour (like Burgundy Mist or maybe Surf Green or something), and I'm thinking about routing a precise pool for the bridge in order to get the string anchoring lower, particularly if I was getting a Babicz, whose saddles still have full contact with the baseplate, even if set high. That would provide the sufficient angle and tension, almost like string-thru-body, but with easily swappable stringage
