1. Apologies if this has been asked before, but I was wondering what peoples thoughts were sound effects units / pedals I'm after something as close as poss to a double bass sound, for my bass guitar Pre-empting those who say "If you want something that sounds like a DB - get a DB" I do play double bass too..... I'm just after achieving something pretty close, with a bass guitar too Some people have mentioned the Zoom B3 effects, as being pretty good Just wondering what anyone else has found? Generally speaking, I don't really "do" too many effects I seem to go through phases of using one pedal, I move on to another, and they usually gather dust But I've heard folk talk quite highly of the Zoom, saying it's got some useful effects, and is reasonably priced for what you get.... Cheers all Marc
2.
So this little number came today...
Looks great! I'm rather envious.....
3. Just wanted to say another + for Markbass cabs I've got a 210 combo, and it cuts through nicely I used to have a Markbass 15 as well, which I sold That was a nice cab (sold due to needing space, and having another cab I didn't want to sell too) Markbass gear certainly is comparatively lightweight I know - cos I'm getting too old to shift heavy stuff around
4. PS. A big part of my own "mid life crisis" was buying basses I really wanted when I was younger, but couldn't afford Mind you, I now have far too many! lol And in reality, I still can't afford them - but I have realised that life is just too short not to have some of what you really want That translates to: Go & treat yourself to a lovely, lovely bass that you really "need" ! EDIT: +1 to BassBods comment also
5.
Roadworns have a smaller radius fretboard & use skinnier frets don't they? These changes probably mean the angles your fingers & wrist are bending at are slightly different to what you're used to so it might just be your muscles straining....
My Roadworn has the same size frets as my USA The necks are really similar, in terms of width, depth and radius too If anything, my USA Jazz is very slightly (only very slightly mind you) narrower at the nut end - not really anything much in it mind Certainly no neck dive on my roadworn.... Like I say, it's the most comfortable bass I've yet played Part of that, I'm sure, is the fact that it is "roadworn" in appearance too By that, I mean I'm not overly precious about it, or having forty fits when a drummer is setting up right next to it I hope you can sort your problem But whatever you feel about the bass, it's not worth suffering tendonitis Good luck Marc
6. Other things can affect cramp in your hand Is it possible that you've only happened to notice it after playing your Roadworn? Have you maybe been clicking away at a computer mouse a lot during the day? How does the neck finish feel, in comparison to your Japan-made neck? Is it more shiny, less shiny? I wonder whether the finish is more worn on your other bass..... I have too many basses atm, including a lovely US Jazz I recently bought on here But I'd hate to think of parting with my roadworn....... eughhhhh
7. Hi Froggy, I used to play bass as a young man Then stopped in my mid-twenties, and didn't take it up again for over 20 years! So it was literally like starting again, and I was a bit older than you are now So it's not insurmountable..... Can't believe it was that long.... Or that I had ever given up, but life being what it is, other things got in the way.... You've made a good start, by having a tutor ... now work out something a bit cooler lol Just play along with some CD's / MP3's (or 78's! lol) and have fun working out more songs It can feel like a real sense of achievement, when you work out a song you really like Anyhow, welcome to the wonderful world of bass The trick is, to just have fun Good luck, and enjoy the journey Marc EDIT: Still having a mid-life crisis, in Cardiff.... Mind you, the "crisis" might have something to do with my local football team
8. Hi, I've got a Roadworn Jazz and it's my fave / most comfortable bass to play It's a Mex built (I think they all are?) and a few years old I got it second-hand from this fab forum It plays beautifully, and I find the neck is just superb Can't say I have any issues with it at all I can play it for ages & ages I can't think what would cause your problem Does the neck have a bit of "drag" compared to your Japan Jazzes? My left hand usually glides along, I must say And the neck seems slimmer than some US Jazzes I've played Hope you can get some helpful feedback, and a solution Let us know how you get on Best Marc
9. Just echoing what the others have said too Daf I didn't actually partake of the trial myself - I just went ahead & bought some silver slaps from what others had recommended But it was a great idea Cheers for setting it up in the first place and thanks for your help & advice too best Marc
10.
Here's my cheapo hybrid that does the job nicely. The colour is horrid and I don't like the upper bout shape but it's all I have I'm saving for a Duke Peacemaker
Some lovely basses on here Actually TPJ Your "cheapo hybrid" looks fine It's a rather nice, fetching red and something a bit different IMO
11.
Thanks for the suggestion Clarky, I was contemplating bodgineering a low tech knockoff of this expensive soundpost setting tool so that I'm not up $hit creek without a paddle if it happens again and I need to be able to rescue the situation myself - it's sod's law that if it happens it will be on the way to a gig or somesuch. http://geminimusical...post-setter.asp Lack of sleep probably means it isn't a good idea to attempt anything right now either driving or fabricating.
Sorry to hear of your bad luck and frustrations Subsonic..... Actually, I was wondering what happened with basses imported from people like Geddo etc I wondered whether the soundposts must be fixed in position somehow, so they stayed in position while in transit..... This of course, effects the sound of the bass I guess most of the time there's not a problem, and the post doesn't move or fall.... Hope you get it sorted asap It's a lovely looking bass Thanks for the link to that tool as well Useful to know where you can get such things.... Or it might be a useful guide to making your own Cheers Marc
12. Hi there, I played a CV Jazz recently, and was impressed I own a CV Precision, and I love it The build quality is fantastic Recently tried an old School, vintage P, and a brand new USA P I must say, I found the neck on the vintage a bit too chunky for my liking The new USA P and my CV have little to choose between them, IMHO But I do slightly prefer my Squier CV P If you haven't got loads of basses, then that CV Jazz could be a good backup? That's the trouble with GAS - if you start looking at ads, or trying basses in shops .... it bites again! Really impressed with the latest Squier CV offerings I tried that Jazz in the same shop as a Mex Jazz (at rather more money) but the CV won hands down Good luck containing your pent-up GAS .... oh, go on, buy it
13.
I suppose I could find myself a more understanding wife who would forego a honeymoon for her new husbands happiness in buying yet another bass!
Let me know how you get on with that! lol Actually, Mrs S is very, very, very understanding ... but I'm even pushing that with all my basses & gear at the moment I want this bass, and yet I'm picking up another bass tonight Is there a cure for GAS? Help
14. Yes, please let us know which one There are a couple of options.... Nice to know something this cheap works well Cheers for the heads up Marc
15. I wish this bass was mine My life would then be complete, surely? It would cure my GAS, maybe?
16. Marc S

Traded

These are quality basses and for the money, they're superb value I used to own one, in my first spell of playing (a good few years back now) I heard from several people, that they were made in the same factory as Japan Fenders Of course, that could be wrong, but I heard it from several sources? Great instruments though, and underrated IMHO GLWTS Marc
17.
My eub always gets a good response from the audience but I don't do theatre or pit work.
An EUB may not look as cool as a DB to us but, funnily enough, when I've played live with an EUB, I seem to get more questions & comments from people in the audience.....
18.
I have played decent DBs and own a cr*p one, and have recently bought a NS Design NXT5....... Most comments at gigs so far have been of puzzlement and compliments - mainly as it is a bit of a novelty. You do get the odd nose turn up at it not being the real thing, but I find that is often from the type of people who are more about style than substance. For me, it is fantastic to play, sounds close enough to a DB for me to feel I'm almost one of the boys and is light and portable. It is sitting next to me in my office at work after I carried it in on the train this morning. It was in its "over the shoulder" bag and could sit on a seat with it without taking up half a carriage (I have a rehearsal in London tonight). I also find the great thing is being able to set it up in playing position and be able to walk off and leave it without worrying about it falling over or where to put it........
I wouldn't worry about the type who turn their noses up If you enjoy playing it, and it sounds close to a DB - then it does what you want it to, and it's nice to play... A good point, re the NS Design stand It's nice, not to have to carry an additional stand, and I find it's quite relaxing, to play an instrument that is supported for you Again, there are those who don't like this but I play both DB and EUB, and I do...... so there lol
19. Are you sure I can't tempt you to trade for my lovely red MM and some cash your way? Must be fed up of me saying this... but I want lol
20. If your gut feeling is DB, rather than EUB then go for it.... I've not tried one of those Geddo basses but everything I've heard about them has been good One thing though, EUB is more portable and convenient, for sure I sold my Stagg, and there were several weeks before I bought another EUB and I have to say, I didn't half miss having the convenience of an EUB.... In an ideal world - we'd all have room / money for both Mrs S is incredibly understanding - but don't tell her I said that Good luck, whichever bass you go for - and we can't wait to see pics now....
21. Thanks for sending those pics cana.dan Looks like a really nice bass I think I'm now sorted, re a Jazz so this MM is now a cash sale only, I'm afraid Ta for your interest / offer though GLWTS Marc
22. Yes, it's all about the journey Just try working a few simple songs out Make sure your bass is in tune, and try jamming along to a few CD's / MP3's But make them simple tunes to start with ... that way, you get to learn how to keep time and get thinking about where the notes are etc And just keep loving the bass, of course
23. Post weekend monday type bump! May change what I'm doing with this bass I've seen a limelight for sale I fancy locally So make me a sensible offer! C'mon somebody - this is getting silly £650 if gone quickly.......
24.
Anyone?
I recently played a Limelight P And although I usually prefer the slimmer-necked P basses these days I did like the neck on the P bass I tried - even though it was more like the older, chunkier P neck profile In terms of the finish / ageing of the neck, it looked great, and felt superb! The body was a tad over-reliced for my tastes, but that's just my taste / opinion and I must say, I was really taken with the feel and look of the bass .... Now I have GAS for a limelight! groan Let us know what you decide Marc PS. You could try asking some of the members who have posted on the Limelight threads, what their opinions are?
