February Composition Challenge - GET RECORDING!
alittlebitrobot replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
Ok, I'm submitting. After never really getting into any flow with last months comp, I wondered if there was more to life than Kraftwerk and sci-fi soundtracks. I decided there isn't. Nevertheless, I thought I should approach this one more loosey-goosey and instead of my usual thing of writing on the bass and then transferring to MIDI, I kept this almost all on the bass (this is BASSchat after all). The other reason is to get the CLANG of steel on steel that the inspiration picture put in my head. Not overly happy with it by any stretch but I'm really busy with work this month so I have to leave it where it is. Anyway, enough waffles, here's the noise: https://soundcloud.c...trobot/clangour -
Having stared at the picture for a short while , I see a big smiley face with light bulb nose on the front of the boiler
Yep saw that too. I saw the photo earlier and I've been telling myself not to use a beat that sounds like the wheels on a track. The problem is, I don't think I can keep that promise. -
Yay! Congrats Ben! I warn you all though, I'm entering in February...and I play to lose!
This forum ain't big enough for two old, tin robots from the future.. that February loss is MINE. Oh, and yes, congratulations Old_Ben You had my vote.

January Composition Challenge - GET RECORDING!
alittlebitrobot replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
Right. I pretty much meant everything I said about my effort this month. To put it nicely, I struggled. And now, the time has run out so, rather than totally abandoning it, I've uploaded it because I'll never get anywhere if I just abandon everything that isn't working. I'm not sure in what way, but I need to approach next months competition a bit differently. Anyway, here it is https://soundcloud.com/alittlebitrobot/space-rabbits I did at least keep it brief for you -
Well we've got a ruddy good turnout for January already! Well done all If your work is still 'in progress' (like mine...) then you have until midnight on Saturday to knock it into shape. Or just say hell with it, and post it up anyway! "Art is never finished, only abandoned", and all that.
Mine'll be abandoned all right. Although, I think the correct term is "fly-tipping" -
I like unlistenably cacophonous...
In that case, I might just go for the "shortest entry" award. -

current status: unlistenably cacophonous. I mean, I want it to be dirty but I have no idea how you all make your tracks sound so legit. -
-
That neck's got a trussrod wheel. I'd probably buy it for the neck and reshape the headstock.
-
wow, so much clickity-clangy fret noise on both those videos. Still, I'd love to try one, because it might be more to do with active electronics and EQ.

Things are getting silly cheap..
Some folks have a gift for poetry, it would seem. Is there really nothing else to be gleaned from this picture..?
Well, initially I wondered if it was a political comment on seemingly-oppositional political figures all being controlled by an unseen puppet master but, for that to work, the two puppets should be different. Then I read the post in the other forum and realised that this artist is just making a visual joke about the woman in the original photo making two V signs, like a 'photobomb rabbit-ear' thing. So, it's actually much shallower than I originally suspected and basically is, now, a woman with her hand up a pair of rabbits arses. As such, I think whatever tune I put together will probably be more of a reaction to the aesthetic style rather than any meaning the image might be trying to convey. I'm expecting some dirty, noisy silliness from me and most of the other entries Anybody who can put together something that is both listenable and apposite could run away with it -
Thanks Dad, your so inspirational. I just don't think a song about a woman with her hand up a rabbit's arse is something I've conceived before :-p
eh, TWO rabbits arses, actually. -

Delays in receiving items shipped from Thoman
alittlebitrobot replied to afterimage's topic in General Discussion
I've had two awful experiences with DHL, one really spectacular one, so when I order from Thomann I ask them if they can use a different courier and they've obliged every time. It's probably still DHL from Thomann to the airport, but then somebody else takes over when it gets to Ireland. -
It's like a Dan Armstrong body with a Fender neck. ...but, then, Fender fretboards go all the way to the end of the neck, as Rumple pointed out.

New Ibanez Fanned fret basses. Nice and cheap!
alittlebitrobot replied to dave_bass5's topic in Bass Guitars
Oh, interesting! ...but WHY wasn't that finish available for my sr506? Lovely. edit: Although, I must add, the B on my 34" bass is a-ok so I'm not too pushed about this fanfrettery. -
It's not a bass but its still extreme!
You need to get hands on with a prestige quality Ibanez to appreciate the difference in quality to their less expensive models.
Yeah, I'd love to. Once I got over the honeymoon period with my sr506, I have to admit it's a very good bass for the money (€600 wasn't going to get me another six string anywhere that quality) but I can easily imagine how it could be improved. I'd love to try their Veasley or Gary Willis bass.
I think it looks gorgeous and if the SR prestige basses are anything to go by I imagine it will play and sound fantastic. Saying that (when taking exchange rate into account) these are roughly the same price as as ACG custom (starting price of one at least).
Funny, that's exactly the luthier that popped into my head when I thought about what I'd do if I had this much money to spend on a bass.
Looks great, I do agree though, like Warwick it's hard to justify that sort of price for a production line built instrument. It's funny I've not had GAS for a 5 string Ibanez since I was about 17, but I'm lusting after an ATK 805e at the moment
Yeah, the production line/ "handbuilt" distinction doesn't bother me too much but, if the money and quality are equivalent, then I'd definitely choose to support an independent luthier over a big factory. I love the look of the ATKs too. There's been a couple in the classifieds here and, only for I'm saving money for tools to make a bass, I'd definitely have one by now.

Any thoughts on this? I think it's lovely-looking but I'm also posting it because I think it's interesting to see all this blurring of brand-name perception. I know Ibanez are seen as good-for-the-price kind of basses, and now there's this high-price, higher-spec apparition. The same used to be said about Squier. Fenders cheap, kind of crappy budget option. Now, not only to people love Squiers, but standards appear to slipping in American-made Fenders to the extent that many people prefer Squiers. (I don't play either Squier or Fender. Please don't lynch me if you disagree. I'm just passing on what I've gleamed from Basschat and Talkbass) Anyway, I think it's interesting. Would you pay this much for a Soundgear? I have an SR506 and I like it a lot, but if I had this kind of money to spend on a bass, I wouldn't go for a Soundgear.
