1. Dang. I can see me ending up with one of these.
2. Pet Sounds. Now, I love vocal harmonies, so this goes against convention for me. I'm not knocking the vocal harmonies (which are superb) but the music and overall sound of the band. I can't abide The Beach Boys' sound. It is lame and lightweight, and the music lacks balls. There is a castrati sound to the vocals which is just too much to bear. And a lot of people say they dislike The Beach Boys, but love God Only Knows....well sir, that's the Beach Boys song I hate the most. Lovely sentiment in the lyrics, but just a cloying, sickly tune to me. I mean no offence to fans - you'd hate a lot of stuff I like, no doubt. I justbhave a particular distaste for The Beach Boys' sound.
3. Dark Side of the Moon. Pink Floyd bore me rigid, apart from a couple of songs. Gilmour is an excellent guitarist, though.
4. Burn. Awesome. They have umpteen brilliant songs but Burn is especially superb.
5. They were working on a new track at the time. Awful puns aside, seriously hope both are okay and make a full and speedy recovery. David Garibaldi is one of the greatest pocket drummers of all time.
6. Okay the two I mentioned aren't particularly simple, but I find them addictive to play. Simple but addictive? Probably Jamiroquai's 'When You Gonna Learn?'or Fiona Apple's 'Criminal'.
7. Sir Duke and I Was Made To Love Her do it for me.
8.
Does it have to be a Fender? How about one of these? (Also available without the bridge pup..)
That.......is stunning.....
9.
Yep - He has a very light touch, which combined with heavy (55-110) Flatwounds, set with very low action is how he gets his signature 'clank'. It's why most guys trying to emulate him can't do it (or certainly can't do it for very long), they end up digging harder and tiring quickly, and they need to do the opposite. Of course it also depends on the individual setup etc, if your action's too high and you start tickling the strings, you ain't gonna clip the frets for the all-important clank! Also helps that he is able to put brand new flatwounds on for every gig...
That's good info, cheers. It's wee tidbits of knowledge like this that make BC a goldmine.
10. Andrew Gouche. Every time he plays. Otherworldly, IMO. Bobby Vega absolutely decks me as well. Re: Pino - love his playing but I can't stand the line on Wherever I Lay My Hat, and in that I walk alone because everybody else loves it!
11.
I seem to remember being told that 'arry has a ridiculously light touch and just tickles them.
It looks like almost a scratch/tickle type of attack! I did read that his rig is effing CRANKED and someone once made the mistake of soundchecking at Steve's regular amp settings, but used a normal attack and almost blew himself off the stage!
12.
I learned to play, playing along to Maiden. He is such an innovator and IMHO one of the best bass players in the world. Scott Ian from Anthrax said in an interview. "Heavy Metal is Steve Harris' right hand!" I managed to catch British Lion (SH's 'other' band) in Birmingham last year and was at the barrier, I just watched his technique all night. Mindbogglingly fast with two fingers I simply couldn't keep up! I use three fingers for my own take on the style and it works well for the music we play, and I throw in a gallop when I can. Somewhere In Time is a good album to jam to, there is a lot of bass synth on that too. But, the Powerslave album is the one to master for me. Listen closely to the title track, in the chorus there's a triplet but, it's a pull up over three strings, it sounds amazing. I can't get that Phantom of the Opera part either! Check out hyottoko1 on YouTube - this Japanese guy is a master of the 'Arry style.
I have! Watched a few vids at the weekend and was most impressed - it was watching him that helped me to learn Be Quick or Be Dead! He's goooood, and his mask is good too!
13. I understand Steve uses two fingers but for now at least, I'm using three. Far less hassle!
14. Okay, my mate is a guitarist but has landed a sweet gig playing bass in a function band. They only gig once or twice a month, but he's come to realise that he needs a compression pedal, and has asked me the following question: "Do I have to buy a bass-specific compressor, or will one for guitar do?" I answered (with admittedly extremely limited knowledge) that, as far as I'm led to believe, he MIGHT be okay with a guitar compressor IF the bass he is using is passive. I explained that it's not ideal as the bass has a far greater output than a guitar, and he ideally would have a bass compressor to handle this, but tbh I do not have the experience to say for sure. I reckoned an active bass would be too powerful for a guitar compressor to handle correctly. He countered that his bandmate advised him that compression is compression, and told him any compression pedal will do the job, even one for vocals. This doesn't make sense to me, but I'm too inexperienced to put forward a solid argument other than "common sense tells me that must be illogical". He also asked me if active basses "need" compression more than passives, or if they benefit more from compression. Can anyone set the record straight please?
15. I always knew - even back in my yout' - that 'arry was a highly-lauded bass player, but it's only really been in the last week or so that I decided to take a closer look at his work and learn some Iron Maiden songs. Bloody 'ell!! This is a workout! I started with Be Quick or Be Dead and Run To The Hills - the galloping triplet feel is a bugger to get right - easy to do sloppily, but getting it tight took some work. I can run the triplet gallop all day long on a held note, but when it starts shifting about in the gallop feel it requires some real effort to keep it even. However, some of his left-hand stuff is just as tricky - I've moved on to Phantom of the Opera, and good grief am I having to work hard! I love this guy's lines, very busy and exciting, so much fun to play. Any Maiden fans on BC able to share some tips for playing in the style of Steve Harris?
16.
When it's a diddy as opposed to a did on the top note, I tend to use thumb for the bom and middle then index for the diddy. Means I don't always have the attack on the bom that I'd like but it gives a comfortable hand position and makes the diddy easier.
I have tried that method, with success, but I felt like I was cheating! It does make the diddy easier, for sure!
17.
If you don't like the Clash that's fair enough, we all have our own tastes, but I wouldn't go on a thread about Funk and Dance slagging off that music because it's not my thing, as someone on here said "there's no bad music just music I like and music I don't"
Fair comment. Sorry.
18.
the same could be said of a lot of people, Paul Weller anybody? if you want to listen to people with good singing voices and no character stick to X factor
Are you trying to patronise me because I don't like The Clash? Why make it look as if the X Factor is the alternative? There are millions of artists out there, and it doesn't boil down to imperfect, but with character, vs autotune.
19. Wow! Thanks, I'll work on that. Great breakdown, thanks for sharing this!
20. One of the most overrated bands of all time IMO. Two or three good tunes, but Joe Strummer can't sing to save himself. Tuneless caterwauling.
21. Please do - I'd be really interested to see/hear this.
