1. Just managed to sell mine on the 'bay for a pretty good price - at long last! Mark
No interest in getting a Thumb shaped Christmas pressie?
2. Yes spot on it is Macassa ebony!
I think you are worrying - that fingerboard looks like a perfect match to me. Macassa ebony right?
3. Well yes - only because it looks nice!! You may recall that I went through the dilemma of trying to decide between a maple fingerboard and a dark wood fingerboard - I only ever wanted blistered maple as I love wood with figuring/burr in it. The cocobola fingerboard in the magazine has to be the most highly figured dark wood fingerboard I have ever seen!! Do you think that it would be a bad idea? Mark
Cocobola? Really?
4. Very, very nice indeed. A nice xmas present?!!! Mark
Picked her up this evening and..........WOW , another masterpiece from Mr. Goodfellow. First impressions, incredibly well balanced and comfortable to hold, stunning to look at , lots of detail to take in, first class workmanship (as if it would be any less than perfect) and an incredible array of tones to call upon. and here with my Rumour, James.
5. Thanks for the kind words - yes the bookmatching is fantastic isn't it! I finally sold my Warwick Thumb on the 'bay on Sunday so I am pretty much gagging for the Rumour now - the fingerboard is my only worry and I am hoping to speak to Bernie about this today. If any of you have seen the 5 string shoot out in this month's BGM you may have noticed the cocobolo fingerboard on the Wood & Tronics bass? That would be my ideal!!! Not sure if Bernie can get that and even if he could what that would push the price up to! It would be good if I could make the trip over to get the bass before I go back to work on Jan 5th though - fingers crossed! Nice shots of the GB in the video - never heard of the band but the bass looks nice! MJB
What an interesting piece of timber for the body. The bookmatched markings at the rear of the body are quite pretty if I do say so myself. The figure is going to pop like mad when that body is polyed and polished up. The before and after when my Rumour was done was unbelievable! Don't worry - this one is going to be ready pretty quickly... I saw James' before it's shape was cut and finished... and literally just a couple of weeks later it's ready! It's close!! It looks like it's been another good year for walnut GBs!
6. Just received the following pics from Bernie. Was hoping that it would be ready between xmas and new year but that seems unlikely now!! I am looking at other fingerboards as I think this one looks a little plain! The facings on the body look lovely when they are "wetted down" believe me. As soon as I have a better idea of completion date I will let you all know. Cheers Mark
James - don't forget to add your latest addition on Tuesday! Oh and I'm expecting Mark's too!
7. As soon as I get mine I will post pictures I promise! A mate of mine is a pro photographer and I am going to ask him to do the honours as soon as I get the Rumour down here. If you follow the link below you can see the pics he took of my Warwick to help me sell it. www.mattbrodie.com/thumbbass Mark
James - don't forget to add your latest addition on Tuesday! Oh and I'm expecting Mark's too!
8. You're a bad man James - that looks awesome!!! Last time I spoke to Bernie he was hoping to get my Rumour 4 finished by Xmas for me to pick up so if you see a 4 string with black american walnut facings back and front then that is mine!!! I hassled Bernie for some pics a week or two ago and they couldn't send them as their ISP was down or something - I guess this must be fixed now?? Let us all know how she plays when you pick her up on Tuesday and some final finished photos would be great too. Bet you are like a small excited child again? - Roll on Tuesday eh! Mark
Well, its almost done, hopefully will pick her up on Tuesday (a nice early xmas present (to myself)! ) Bernie was kind enough to send me some pics to tide me over the weekend. He has stressed that they are not great photo's due to the lighting, and is even more beautiful in person. i've decided to go without LED's (for now) . oh, and a bit of t shirt porn too, Come on Tuesday!!! James.
9. Nice one - will update the ad on the 'bay now. Did you sell yours this weekend? Mark
Just a heads-up as it could matter to a potential buyer (and 'might' help you achieve a higher price) but your eBay ad needs a quick amendment... the neck is wenge (and bubinga) not ovankol; ovankol is the wood of choice for the recent range not these old basses.
10. Thanks for the kind comments on the Thumb. Funnily enough this one actually came from The Bass Centre when they were in Wapping! I remember going down to London to buy this bass and could not believe how many Warwick's they had in stock - it was like heaven. I chose mine because it was the best looking that day and played like a dream. Only seems like yesterday but it was a fair old while ago now. Hope someone buys her soon and gives her a good home. Mark
That is a lovely bass. I've never owned a Thumb for various reasons (most of the ones I've played have been bloody heavy and have neck-dived for a start) but if I ever get the chance to rectify that I'd love one just like yours, which is about as nice a Thumb as I've ever seen. The older ones are really, really nice. I remember them first coming into the Bass Centre in Wapping all those centuries ago; could not get my head round them at the time. "Where's the finish?" was one of my first comments, I believe... . FWIW I've had 2 Dolphins, a '91 and a '96 and the first blew the second out of the water.
11. Now that would make for an interesting TV program!
Damn does that mean yours is older than mine, by 38 basses? They probably used to know eachother. We should ring Cilla.
12. Well I'm definitely closer! A2676 91
Aw. Well mine's A2714 91. Anybody got a Jan '91 or a Feb '90?
13. I will find the serial number and post a bit later just to see how close they were all built!
I've got one too, I'll never sell it. We should compare serials and see how closely related they are.
14. You speak a very true word my friend. They are a classic bass and everyone should own or have owned one at least in their bass playing career. It does just seem to be a real shame that the 2nd hand value of them at the moment is on the floor. If I did not need to pay the bill for the GB then there is no way that I would let it go for under a grand - it is nothing short of criminal. Mark
I have a 91 NT Thumb and they are truly superb basses. Great neck, no neck dive, growly tone, active & passive, quality construction and beautiful to boot. Not at all expensive for what it is imo. Bump
15. Coming along nicely - Bernie was going to send me some in the middle of the build type pics but he is having a few problems with the computer again!! Should be ready to pick up between xmas and new year! Mark
 16. Well if it wasn't for that bloody Bernie Goodfellow I would not have to be selling it!!!! Mark
Id kill for this bass.....seriously, who and where? Good luck with the sale.
17. Having to sell to fund my new GB Rumour bass which is going to be ready in a matter of weeks! I will be very sorry to see her go as she has been a trusty and reliable bass for a long, long time. There are some signs of wear on the bass but nothing out of the ordinary for a guitar that is 17 years old. There is some "thumb rash" above the bridge pick up and a couple of scratches around the jack socket and cut away to the neck. However I repeat that these are minor and cannot be seen unless you look really, really close! The bass has been polished regularly with Warwick polish and was set up earlier this year so plays like a dream. This is certainly the most reliable bass that I have owned and no wonder that they are the choice of so many pro's! Please note that as I am funding a new bass I am not open to any trades for this one. I understand that about the £800 mark is what this is worth which is a little hard to swallow given that I paid nearly £2k for her. If you want see more pics then please follow the link below: Thumb Bass pic gallery Cheers Mark
 18. Definitely without - let the beauty of the wood shine through!!
With or without? ...and I reckon a tort guard is in order...?
19. Here Here!
very nice and understated, BTW it was good to see the GB Rumour beat the rest by a country mile in the latest BGMag 5 string shoot out, as if there was any doubt anyway!
20. That is going to be an amazing bass - and very unique. I am waiting for some pics from Bernie as we speak for my Rumour which is well on it's way and should be ready for Xmas. I have some pics like your of the wood that I chose for the facings etc and am hoping for others from Bernie which show the middle stages before the guitar is finished. I know what you mean about being excited I can hardly wait either. The best thing about GB Basses is not only that they look fantastic but they play and sound awesome too! Cheers Mark
Right, went down to see Bernie this morning, and took a few snaps of the bass so far, i'm very very very very very very very very very very very very excited!!:D:D Here's what it looked like last time, i'd been quite specific as to what i wanted , and i think Bernie has excelled!! And here is the progress, its still rough sawn, but i think its gonna be stunning!! the thru neck is almost there, Bernie has used Ebony for the splices, as well as the fret board , a lovely jet black, this is a first for a GB !! to give you an idea with knobs and hardware, JUst look at this wood, its outrageous! only a matter of weeks now, i'm gonna get led's , not decided on colour yet, and i'm going to try some single coil p/ups, which can be changed if i don't get on with them. James.
21. Guys, it is Bernie Goodfellow BTW! Mark
Hi Paul, Get in touch with Bernie Goodman of GB Cuitars. He is the UK distributor and official servcice company for EBS. When I had problems with my HD350 I phoned Bernie, sent it to him, he repaired it and returned it. The only thing it cost me was the courier to him. Bernie is first class, and so very helpful. His number is 01273 220055. ade
22. Definitely is a snakewood board. I played this bass back in the Spring when Mark decided to put it up for sale in the shop. This is the bass that made me decide that a GB bass was for me! The only reason that I decided not to buy it was that I wanted to go the whole hog and choose my own woods etc. I think that £1,750 is a fair price as it is roughly £2,500 for a new Spitfire in the same spec.
The GB shots of that bass. Snakewood fingerboard by the looks of things... talking really exotic wood on that particular spitifire then...
23. OK Let me know if that changes at all. Thanks Mark
thanks mark but if i can i would rather a straight rig trade many thanks ian
24. Did offer a trade for my Aguilar AG500SC but at that time you said that you wanted a straight sale. Any interest in this head now? Mark
anyway back to the add very nice gear any takers
