Did any one you know influence your music??
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
James plays the Rhodes like a demon on that album - free your mind is an excellent track. Have you ever heard the set that they played at Glastonbury in 1997? Loads of In The Hand stuff but with a killer trumpet player. Also features Dolly James on vocals who I was luck enough to record with also a few years back! Mark
I bought the vinyl of in the the hand when it came out its lovely sunday afternoon relaxing funky soul, the instrumental track journey is my favourite but the vinyl came with a free acid jazz 12 inch of a song called free your mind which is excellent, the album was the best they did i wish they had stuck to that format with less hammond.
-

I agree that In The Hand is the best JTQ album by far - they never seem to have recaptured that song writing again on subsequent albums. Apparently the newest one out is supposed to be very good but I have not heard it yet. Not heard of Vibraphonic I will check them out. Incognito are playing at O2 Indigo soon so I was thinking of checking them out - last time I saw them was the Everyday tour in 1997 I think!!! What stuff were you playing in the F&F? I think Ipso Facto are playing The Strand on August 14th and I am trying to get Zang Tang a few gigs in Cheltenham too. We played at The Norwood as part of the fringe of Cheltenham Jazz Festival and it was packed out I can honesty say that it was the busiest and best pub gig that I gave ever played. It was awesome! Yes I did get the GB Rumour and it is fantastic - few pics below for you and more in the GB Porn Thread! Mark
Hey Mark...Yeah have seen you play, as you know in the Railway and loved it..so yes there is funk in chelt for sure.....You hit the nail on the head..JTQ's In the hand of the Inevitable is just supreme..the best they did IMO... Mark do you know Vibraphonic? Also went to see Incognito a couple of weeks ago in London at the Camdem Centre..Francis Hilton was playing an Atelier Z...Was fantastic... I played in the erm...Frog and Fiddle last thursday...You playing anywhere in chelt again soon bro? PS.. did you get the GB you were after??
-

Hey - we are not all indie rockers round here you know!! I am sure you have seen one of my bands play live Bubinga and hope you would agree that there is some funk in Cheltenham? Having said that when I started out with the bass it was the rock thing that got me going and all of that came from my brother - I can still remember the first time I put on the vinyl records of AC/DC If you want blood... and Iron Maiden's Iron Maiden. They blew me away and I just wanted to be Steve Harris for a few years!!! Interestingly enough Facebook had a thing the other week which was "5 albums which changed your life" and that was really hard to do but in the end it sort of illustrated my musical development starting out with Iron Maiden's first album then moving on to Metallica's Kill'Em All where Cliff Burton really made an impact and then moving on to Jamiroquai's EOPE and JTQ's In The Hand Of The Inevitable and I think there was something from Queen in there too in the middle. I soon decided that 5 albums was not enough but it was fun anyway! Mark
For me it was my sister...We both came from NewZealand in 1980 and we were both brought up with stuff like, EWF, Anita Baker, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Crown Heights Affair. This was my breakfast muic on the radio.. etc through the 80's......until .. We used to listen to the Robbie Vincent Radio 1 show?? in the very early 90's, I think it was called the big beat show?? It was when Soul to Soul first came about, and others like Adeva's,... awsome "Respect" cover was playing..Mantronics, Omar, Brand New Heavies were about...And a Hip Hop act called Hijack, i was a big hip hop fan and still am...Mos Def, Gang Starr, Freddie the Fox, Paris, are awsome.. My sister won tickets to see Anita Baker in Birmingham for two...Thats when i saw Nathan East for the first time...Loved his playing, allways have done...Thats when i knew i loved soul music, have always listened to Anita to this day...Without wanting to sound cheesy, my and my Sister always get on better with Anita playing.... Anyway my sister was the spark that set me off ...why isnt this music more popular around my side of the country?? its all Indie or Rock,...has knowone heard of Donny Hathaway round ere??? Its very hard and rare!! to meet any musician round ere....that love's funk and soul...Makes you want to write your own stuff... Whats your progression to your love of music now.. PS..anyone heard.. Brand New Heavies.. "Rhyme Heavy Experience" the best funky hip hop ive heard!!!!
-
Hi Russ, Excellent reading - just where do you get this stuff from? Mark
GB fans. Got a little treat for you here. It's the first review of the 4 and 5 string Rumours at the start of what we now know as GB. I'm sure it'll tickle your fancy I haven't seen these reviews for some time and they are certainly not on the net anywhere (to my knowledge) so I scanned it and made it available for everybody. Enjoy.
I could be interested in this - can you post some pics? Mark
For Sale is my Akai Headrush delay/looper pedal. Awesome pedal with both a great delay sound as well great fun to be had with the looping aspect of it too. The pedal is mechanicaly sound and works as good as new but unfortunatley has picked up a couple of knocks, and has not got the original box or instruction's. However, I am more then happy to print off a copy of the instructions and send it in a suitable box. As a result, i'll be looking for £65+p&p for it, I think this is still a great price all things considering because at the end of the day the pedal is truely inspiring and is in full working order. Any questions, dont hesitate. I can add photo's if anyone is to show any interest. Cheers. EDIT: I just realised that I could be a swayed into a trade for something. Not too sure what i'm looking for because i seem to be downsizing my pedals but if you have anything on offer let me know and I shall consider all.
GB Rumour/Spitfire every time! You might have to find a bit more cash if you want all of the toys on it though! My advice would be to buy British every time though. Mark

See they don't all end up in Lichfield!!!
No cigar this time around for the Cheltenham Spitfire. I thought it was best to resist...
Russ, Well I tend to only use the slap switch for tunes that I slap all the way through and then go the whole hog with the MultiComp to for the full on Mark King experience. For fingerstyle stuff I tend to have the bridge pickup favoured and with just a smidge of bass and treble boost. The mid stays flat most of the time for me. I will add though that you only need a tiny amount of boost to get a killer sound. I depped for a band the other week and there were a few reggae tracks in their set so really went for it and wound the neck pick up to full cut the treble and full boost on the bass knob and played the songs with my hand above the neck pickup. The drummer loved it and said that it made his balls shake which was a first! Mark
Gunsfreddy - just out of interest, what are your fave pot positions (and switch position)? PS I want a G Spot on my 4 string. I'm missing it.
-
On the tone front - I mentioned in a previous post that I no longer use any EQ on my amp I just set it all flat and cut and boost what I need from the bass - makes life a lot easier I can tell you. Not sure if everyone approaches it that way but my Aguilar head is such a clean honest sound that it works great.
You shouldn't have much problems with tone with your Rumour then. If you can't get your sound out of that preamp and pickups combination, you are pretty much stuffed! Alembic - Gosh still heavy despite being chambered? What is that thing made out of? Lead?! BTW, how did you find out about the Rumour?

Have you checked in the case recently...? So what's that pic then? Your GB and your "beater" bass for the dangerous gigs??
-
Oh yes! Since I have had my Rumour I seem to be having all the EQ on my amp set flat and then I just dial in the tone that I need from the bass. I played at Cheltenham Jazz Festival over the weekend and used a G K amp at one gig and did exactly the same with that amp. Is that the way that you tend to approach EQ with your GB's? A miracle!!!
...and if by magic... it turns up in my signature.
Yes I think you are right - it seems to be whatever Bernie builds goes to Staffordshire (eventually) apart from mine of course!
Very strange... but as they say, "What happens in Brighton, stays in Brighton..." ...oh hang on, that's not right is it... or is it... "What's built in Brighton ends up in the Midlands..."...?
Strange things go on in Brighton you know!
The powers of the mystical tree eh?!
That is just too weird!!!
Just incase anybody is confused about the tree... (Not photoshopped - honest!)
Ah the good old one in one out rule - mind you when you start talking about GB's I can understand that a little! I should imagine your household insurance bill is quite scary judging by the list of GB's that you have or will have shortly! What's wrong with gold knobs!!!!!! It certainly is a sweet looking bass alright - I could see the sense in going for a single coil option to offer a different tonal palette but hey if you like the humbuckers just have more of 'em. TBF with the sounds that you can get from them I don't know why anyone would need to look at anything else. I still piss myself laughing every time I flick the "slap" switch down and press the MultiComp on - Mark King sound in two easy moves, I just wish I could then play like him. I think that eventually I may get rid of the KSD 5 and order a Spitfire 5 as I do like the feel of them and could go for the maple board that I lamented over for so long when having the Rumour built. The KSD feels so heavy and toneless after playing the Rumour. Might just have to wait for this bloody recession to bugger off first though.
I bought it off somebody who is having a Spitfire built at the moment - I think he is made to live by that one in one out rule... I had a few mods done to it - new bridge, new tuning pegs and back to the finishers for a repolish etc... so it looks brand new - not a mark on it (no dings or anything)! Just waiting for new knobs (Hipshot O-rings). All that gold is too bling - I want to break it up with a little gold and black. Interestingly enough, I played it when Bernie had it and he was putting single coils into it. I loved it then and wanted it! Strage how things work out eh?! Played with the single coils for a while but then had Bernie put the original humbuckers back in - as good as the single coils were, I prefer having the versatility of the humbuckers. The wood? It's double stained quilted maple. It's quite a nice example - especially with the rear facing... and it plays like a demon... a proper little funk machine!
Come on in and join the GB club - you know it makes sense!!
Why oh why do I look at this thread, when all it does is mess with my head?
-
Now I am confused!! Is that a new one for you or an older one that you have just bought? Wood looks fantastic though - what is that?
Pants lighting - done under lightbulb... but you get the idea.
-
Yeah it's pretty busy isn't it? Can you let us know a bit more about your Rumour4 - I am very intrigued indeed! I was gigging with the Rumour the other night and realised that as it plays so fast I was actually getting ahead of the song whilst playing quite a fast thumb/slap section. I think Bernie should put a "Watch Your Speed" warning on each bass as they really do make you play faster because they are so smooth and quick in the neck - fantastic!!!
I've always liked that Spitfire - there's some crazy wood action going on there. Still got to take some photos of the Rumour4 and put them on here... when I have 5 mins...! For the sake of the thread, I'll post the pics from the auction here so they aren't lost when the auction ends and long forgotten about.
Ah this is where it all started for me! This is the bass owned by Mark Howells who runs Aroundabout Sound in Cheltenham and is the first GB that I ever played and after playing this bass I was hooked on the sound and feel but rather than buy his I decided to get Bernie to build one just for me!!!! It is a fantastic bass and plays very well indeed. It is a good price but in my mind the thuya wood was just to reminiscent of leopard skin print! Still each to their own and at £1,300 it would be a steal. Good luck anyone who goes for it you won't be disappointed. Advice needed from Aguilar AG500SC users
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
I thought that being able to mix the amount of dry/wet signal using the effects loop would have been helpful for envelope filters and fuzz etc? Mind you have heard the awesome tones that you get so not going to doubt you! Have you ever used the loop on the Aggie? Mark
I use this head and I run everything straight into the front end. Sounds great to me. It's usually only modulation/delay that goes in the effects loop anyway, envelope filters should be kept up front IMO.
-
Need some help here guys! I use an Aguilar AG500SC amp head and have been using the effects loop function since I bought it a while ago. However I seem to be in a dilemma as to whether I should use this function or just go direct to the pedals and out to the amp for the best results? As I understand it the Send and Return dials allow you to mix the amount of dry signal you hear through your cabs which in essence sounds like a good idea but I am wondering if this means that you lose some of the depth of the effect? I seem to be struggling to get my EBS Bass IQ to give me the amount of effect that I need in a gig scenario and I wondered if I might find it easier if I did not use the effect loop at all. Would be interested to hear how other users of this amp head find this feature and which way you approach this? Other amp users can also chip in if they want to on the subject of effect loops as I am sure that the principles are the same across the board! Cheers Mark
