1. See they don't all end up in Lichfield!!!
No cigar this time around for the Cheltenham Spitfire. I thought it was best to resist...
2. Russ, Well I tend to only use the slap switch for tunes that I slap all the way through and then go the whole hog with the MultiComp to for the full on Mark King experience. For fingerstyle stuff I tend to have the bridge pickup favoured and with just a smidge of bass and treble boost. The mid stays flat most of the time for me. I will add though that you only need a tiny amount of boost to get a killer sound. I depped for a band the other week and there were a few reggae tracks in their set so really went for it and wound the neck pick up to full cut the treble and full boost on the bass knob and played the songs with my hand above the neck pickup. The drummer loved it and said that it made his balls shake which was a first! Mark
Gunsfreddy - just out of interest, what are your fave pot positions (and switch position)? PS I want a G Spot on my 4 string. I'm missing it.
3. On the tone front - I mentioned in a previous post that I no longer use any EQ on my amp I just set it all flat and cut and boost what I need from the bass - makes life a lot easier I can tell you. Not sure if everyone approaches it that way but my Aguilar head is such a clean honest sound that it works great.
You shouldn't have much problems with tone with your Rumour then. If you can't get your sound out of that preamp and pickups combination, you are pretty much stuffed! Alembic - Gosh still heavy despite being chambered? What is that thing made out of? Lead?! BTW, how did you find out about the Rumour?
4.
Have you checked in the case recently...? So what's that pic then? Your GB and your "beater" bass for the dangerous gigs??
5. Oh yes! Since I have had my Rumour I seem to be having all the EQ on my amp set flat and then I just dial in the tone that I need from the bass. I played at Cheltenham Jazz Festival over the weekend and used a G K amp at one gig and did exactly the same with that amp. Is that the way that you tend to approach EQ with your GB's?
Like the trees in Brighton!
6. A miracle!!!
...and if by magic... it turns up in my signature.
7. Yes I think you are right - it seems to be whatever Bernie builds goes to Staffordshire (eventually) apart from mine of course!
Very strange... but as they say, "What happens in Brighton, stays in Brighton..." ...oh hang on, that's not right is it... or is it... "What's built in Brighton ends up in the Midlands..."...?
8. Strange things go on in Brighton you know!
The powers of the mystical tree eh?!
9. That is just too weird!!!
Just incase anybody is confused about the tree... (Not photoshopped - honest!)
10. Ah the good old one in one out rule - mind you when you start talking about GB's I can understand that a little! I should imagine your household insurance bill is quite scary judging by the list of GB's that you have or will have shortly! What's wrong with gold knobs!!!!!! It certainly is a sweet looking bass alright - I could see the sense in going for a single coil option to offer a different tonal palette but hey if you like the humbuckers just have more of 'em. TBF with the sounds that you can get from them I don't know why anyone would need to look at anything else. I still piss myself laughing every time I flick the "slap" switch down and press the MultiComp on - Mark King sound in two easy moves, I just wish I could then play like him. I think that eventually I may get rid of the KSD 5 and order a Spitfire 5 as I do like the feel of them and could go for the maple board that I lamented over for so long when having the Rumour built. The KSD feels so heavy and toneless after playing the Rumour. Might just have to wait for this bloody recession to bugger off first though.
I bought it off somebody who is having a Spitfire built at the moment - I think he is made to live by that one in one out rule... I had a few mods done to it - new bridge, new tuning pegs and back to the finishers for a repolish etc... so it looks brand new - not a mark on it (no dings or anything)! Just waiting for new knobs (Hipshot O-rings). All that gold is too bling - I want to break it up with a little gold and black. Interestingly enough, I played it when Bernie had it and he was putting single coils into it. I loved it then and wanted it! Strage how things work out eh?! Played with the single coils for a while but then had Bernie put the original humbuckers back in - as good as the single coils were, I prefer having the versatility of the humbuckers. The wood? It's double stained quilted maple. It's quite a nice example - especially with the rear facing... and it plays like a demon... a proper little funk machine!
11. Come on in and join the GB club - you know it makes sense!!
Why oh why do I look at this thread, when all it does is mess with my head?
12. Now I am confused!! Is that a new one for you or an older one that you have just bought? Wood looks fantastic though - what is that?
Pants lighting - done under lightbulb... but you get the idea.
13. Yeah it's pretty busy isn't it? Can you let us know a bit more about your Rumour4 - I am very intrigued indeed! I was gigging with the Rumour the other night and realised that as it plays so fast I was actually getting ahead of the song whilst playing quite a fast thumb/slap section. I think Bernie should put a "Watch Your Speed" warning on each bass as they really do make you play faster because they are so smooth and quick in the neck - fantastic!!!
I've always liked that Spitfire - there's some crazy wood action going on there. Still got to take some photos of the Rumour4 and put them on here... when I have 5 mins...! For the sake of the thread, I'll post the pics from the auction here so they aren't lost when the auction ends and long forgotten about.
14. Ah this is where it all started for me! This is the bass owned by Mark Howells who runs Aroundabout Sound in Cheltenham and is the first GB that I ever played and after playing this bass I was hooked on the sound and feel but rather than buy his I decided to get Bernie to build one just for me!!!! It is a fantastic bass and plays very well indeed. It is a good price but in my mind the thuya wood was just to reminiscent of leopard skin print! Still each to their own and at £1,300 it would be a steal. Good luck anyone who goes for it you won't be disappointed. Mark
Pretty spectacular wood on this one... and bound neck to boot. 15. Invariably this is always the case with the Bay!!
Oh well it's gone too high for me now.
16. I thought that being able to mix the amount of dry/wet signal using the effects loop would have been helpful for envelope filters and fuzz etc? Mind you have heard the awesome tones that you get so not going to doubt you! Have you ever used the loop on the Aggie? Mark
I use this head and I run everything straight into the front end. Sounds great to me. It's usually only modulation/delay that goes in the effects loop anyway, envelope filters should be kept up front IMO.
17. Need some help here guys! I use an Aguilar AG500SC amp head and have been using the effects loop function since I bought it a while ago. However I seem to be in a dilemma as to whether I should use this function or just go direct to the pedals and out to the amp for the best results? As I understand it the Send and Return dials allow you to mix the amount of dry signal you hear through your cabs which in essence sounds like a good idea but I am wondering if this means that you lose some of the depth of the effect? I seem to be struggling to get my EBS Bass IQ to give me the amount of effect that I need in a gig scenario and I wondered if I might find it easier if I did not use the effect loop at all. Would be interested to hear how other users of this amp head find this feature and which way you approach this? Other amp users can also chip in if they want to on the subject of effect loops as I am sure that the principles are the same across the board! Cheers Mark
 18. Hi, I ran exactly that model of pre-amp for over 10 years and do have to say that it was fantastic - never missed a beat once and used to deliver a really nice tone too. There are some good options on the pre-amp if you like bi-amping etc and also the tube or solid state blend which always offered a nice contrast in sounds. I sold mine on e-bay a couple of years ago to a guy in Australia and I think he paid about £250 for it in the end. I am sure that when I bought mine from the Bass Centre it was nearly a grand! If you can get it under £150 it has to be worth it and for that money there is no way that you would be disappointed it was a great amp in it's day! Cheers Mark
I'm interested in this trace pre but i can't find anything about it on the TE site. Does anyone else have one or know alittle about them? How much might one go for? Trace Elliot GP12 SMX Bass pre-amp
19. We must be like exact opposites as I started out with Q-Tron after reading that it was the exact same innards as the Mu-Tron III but just could not get the sound that I was looking for out of it and opted for the Bass IQ which has been a lot better. However I do tend to think that no matter what I do to the Bass IQ it ain't gonna sound like the Agent 00 Funk!! Might just have to bite the bullet and see what the Mark II has to offer. By all accounts the Mark I was not that special.
Personally I didn't get on with the EBS IQ. Couldn't get it to quack enough for my taste and no amount of trim pot tweaking seemed to help. I ditched it for a Q-Tron. I've heard quite a few samples of the Agent 00 Funk and it sounds awesome. Dunno about the sensitivity of the knobs though.
20. There seems to be some real differences between the sound from Neo speakers in general. I tried the EBS stuff and just could not get on with it at all and I know others who have found the same and use the EBS Pro Line cabs which do use traditional speakers instead. Having said that I did end up buying an Epifani UL210 and have to say that I love the sound from it - so much for something that weighs so little! My agenda was to replace my old cabs which weighed a ton with something that was much lighter and had a great sound. If you can find that from Neo cabs then of course they have to be a better option.
Hi all, I wonder what is U're opinion on this matter... NEO Vs. Classic Are neo cabs just practical (small, light, loud...), or do they have also a versatil tone...etc. Is it a matter of taste regarding the classic cabs...or is just the price (again, Neo cabs have better prices, when it comes to more W... ) Cheers! F.
21. This sound! http://www.chunksystems.com/sounds/superfreak.mp3
Which Agent 00 Funk sound? Start with front pots where I said and tweak from there. YOu will find the greatest change in the response of the IQ by boosting your GBs mid pot... Its more what you put into the pedal than the pedal yourself... and with the amount of boost on your GB, you can coax more out than any other bass.
22. Cool - going to try this out later today. Bernie told me it was best not to f*** around with them!! Can it get near to the Agent 00 Funk sound? Where do you have the control knobs on the front set at for a similar sound? Mark
The trim pots are the secret to this pedal!! Start with the left pot at 3 oclock, the right pot at 9 oclock and the switch in the fully up position. Then with the back of the pedal off, alter the trim pots to taste. You'll find a sweet spot where the pedal suddenly starts quacking like mad.
23. Thanks Russ, The demo sounds on the Chunk Systems website sound fantastic but that is for the Mark II which I think has an extra Squelch control! To be fair I cannot get anything similar to this from my Bass IQ. Perhaps I am not setting up the dials correctly? Have you adjusted the internal trim pots on yours? I know a lot of people have done this but it never really appealed to me. Would just like to get this kind of sound but without the expense of buying yet another pedal!!! Cheers
Yes I had one (Mark I) - it's now with a guitarist I know. It seems to work even better on guitar. Changed it for the IQ. The IQ just seems to be easier to tweak to get the sounds. I found with the Agent 00 Funk, you could get some great sounds but the slightest movement of the knobs would mess things up completely! Its a big box also... and you'll be hard pushed to beat the IQ for bass.
24. Looking at trying a new envelope filter on my board and so far the Chunk Systems Agent 00 Funk sounds the best by far on the net and probably the only one that I would consider replacing my EBS Bass IQ for. Has anyone bought one of these or demo'd one? Some feedback on the Mark I would also be welcome. Cheers guys Mark
 25. Would anyone say that the Elixir or Rotosound Nexus strings are bright enough for the MM sound when fresh on?
I would say no, I personally feel they have a "week-on" sound and don't have that zingy MM sound. Perhaps not for you then.
