1. Bought some strings this week to re-string my Stingray 5 and stupidly bought a taperwound low B when my bass is set up for standard strings! This string has been put on and then taken back off 5 mins later when I realised my mistake. Would like to get something close to what I paid for it as it is practically brand new.
 2. I would personally stick with the 3 band on the fretless - more usable there and easier too! I am going to go with the East pre-amp in my Classic 5 and may look at the Nordstrand p/up if I feel that I still need something else adding afterwards. It's funny how different the tone is from the '77 Stingray and the 2011. They are like chalk and cheese.
Yeah currently only my Fretless has an MM4.2 in it, but I used to have one in the first Stingray I had. Personally I find the tone a little bit clearer and defined, and I found it eliminated the "Dead G string" problem that Stingrays seem to suffer from where you can't hear it as opposed to the other strings. What I was thinking of doing is taking the 4.2 out of my Fretless and putting it in my new 89 Fretted, and then buy the MM4.4 for all the coil switching options, and put that in my Fretless with a 2band EQ, but I'm thinking it might be a lot less hassle to just leave it as a 3EQ - I think the mid control might be more of an asset on the Fretless. 3. Nice board - what is the signal chain/pedal list? What connectors are you using , it looks unfeasibly tidy to me!
The latest incarnation: Don't think there's room for any more!
4.
I bet you will love it. You're on! I also ordered one a couple of days ago... I'll race you! 5. Yes.
Did you go for the 3-band version?
6. Going to go for the East MM pre-amp after talking to John (top man), hoping to get this in the next 7-10 days. If still not satisfied I may look to change the p/up to a Nordstrand as also suggested but think one step at a time is most sensible.
Another +1 for the East kit - honestly, it can change everything about the sound of your bass in a really positive way, or it can just add a tickle of whatever you fancy. My East pre is the single best thing I bought last year - superb.
7. Hey Higgie, does only one of your Stingray's have a Nordy p/up in it? If so what is the difference in tone like from that compared to the stock Stingray p/ups?
 8. Sign of the times I think! I'd be interested in the DI - send me a PM with what you want for it!
The recession is clearly hitting hard! I was going to sell a boxed, instructioned and PSU'd Deep Impact but judging by people's lack of interest in cool pedals it'd be best to hang on to it! Hey ho - things will improve! 9. Ha ha - I did exactly that too and on Elixir's Strings Direct were cheaper than Stringbusters who I normally use.
When I priced up my order for the same thing from Strings Direct with the 10% discount and then Stringbusters (my usual, too) with no discount, Stringbusters still came out substantially cheaper. 10. Needed some new Elixir's for my 5 string so this worked perfectly - thanks for the heads up much appreciated!
 11. If it sounds like the outboard pre then I would be well up for that!
I've heard a few guys on TB recommend the Sadowsky pre as being similar sounding to the Musicman one before. Can't say for sure, but it may be worth a shot. 12. Do they do one for a Stingray then?
sadowsky on board preamp sort you out then? you already know you like the sound.

sadowsky on board preamp sort you out then? you already know you like the sound.
13. Because I only like to use the pre-amp for boosting the sound for slap sections where you need a little more bottom end. I only keep it on all the time with the passive jazz as it needs it all the time. Like an earlier post I really like to try and control the sound from the bass rather than playing with the EQ on the amp which I tend to keep flat anyway.
why turn it off then?
14. Can you fit these into a 2 band Stingray?
I have the Seymour Duncan one (in two basses), and it is ok but I much prefer the John East MMSR one (of which I have one and I'm about to get another) The MMSR bass/treble sounds a lot like a 2EQ preamp, but I felt it was a bit "tighter" somehow. Not as boomy and not as trebly. In addition, the midsweep module is what really sets this preamp apart. Being able to sweep and select what midfrequencies to boos or cut comes really handy. Most of the times you don't need a big boost/cut, but it is very helpful, and with the sweep control it is a breeze to find just where to apply the boost/cut you want. I really like it. It seems to be on teh expensive side, but well worth it in my opinion.
15. It just sounds a little lacking sometimes! I use a Sadowsky pre-amp and when you turn that off and go back to the bass only it sounds rather weedy!!
I think Beedster meant pre not pup. What's lacking with the stock pre that can't be sorted with a bit of shaping at the amp end? I'm sure the East adds something but the stock pre suits my SR5 pretty well IMO ...
16. Correct me if I am wrong but on the East site they only seem to sell the pre-amp but no PUP??
My East Stingray PUP blew the stock MM version out of the water, a way better piece of kit
17. Thanks - will check it out. Does it give you a lot more depth to the tone from the bass now?
i put a seymour duncan musicman pre in my sabre and really like it. might be worth a look.
18. I know that East make a highly recommended replacement pre-amp for jazz basses and they appear to have something similar for a Stingray on their site but does anyone know if this offers a much better sound than the stock pre-amp that they ship with or anyone else who makes a really ballsy pre-amp for a Stingray?
 19. Snap!! A real bargain looking at what mine cost me!!
Really sad to see one of these go at such a low price. Would be worth buying as an investment alone! If I had the cash I'd snap it up at this price - And I've already got one!
20. As mentioned before take it to Eltham, you won't be disappointed.
 21. Are you sure about that? If it is a '73 then surely the finger rest would be below the G string given the earlier info on the link that was put in the thread earlier?
Yes, it's me who is buying it! thanks Tony! I am a very lucky man. Oh, and it is a 1973 Jazz bass not 1974. Pots also indicate 1973 serial no' 502*** indicates 1973. http://home.provide....der.html#serial
22. Is this still for sale?
 23. Nice work - must be bang on the changeover. Even the thumb rest on the later 74's is in the wrong place as I need to be plucking near the bridge for them funky tones!!
Looks like that was right around the time they moved it. I think It was down below so that you could rest your fingers on it and play with your thumb, which was what Leo F originally envisiged electric bass players doing. http://www.fender.co...php?f=9&t=45043
24. + 1 to that. Never understood what use a thumb rest was down there!!
Don't have a clue Gunsfreddy2003 - that's where it was when I got the bass some 32 years back. There aren't any extra holes so I don't think it's been moved and it's in a useful place where it is. 25. I have a '74 jazz but the thumb rest is underneath the G-string - when did they change the positioning?
