1. Heaving scene here in Camden with 20+ venues putting on a variety of live original music Seven nights a week ranging from bands just starting out to established names + numerous open mics, jam nights etc. No idea about the covers / function scene though.
2.
First rule of business: find out what people want and give it to them
Unless your Apple... Then you just bring out whatever you like and legions of dedicated followers decide they can't live without it.
3. I hate adverts like this as they remind me of my inadequacies as a marketable person... No amount of bass playing ability is going to make me into the bassist this band wants. How good I am is utterly irrelevent as they are looking for someone with the right image for their band... and I doubt that image is a chubby bald guy in his 30s. and the thing is... in the context of popular music they are actually right as noone cares about bass anyway and the right look is far more likely to get them noticed... a label can supply them with songs if their faces fit, they cannot supply me with a new face... ho hum...
4.
I had to pleasure of playing through just one Sk8's old 1x12, without a tweeter, at a Moffat Bass Bash a few years ago and was hugely impressed. We were set up in an empty theatre, probably seats a little under 100, and with an Ibanez Promethean head it completely filled to room! The only reason you might want to change would be for new aesthetics... Is that's helping?... Sorry Mike Walsh does make amazing cabs though, and they look very cool too. Eude
I saw the new designs on his website... That definitely addresses the issue with the size of the enclosure and presumably the weight is a little less as well, although I'm not sure where a tweeter would go in that new 112? Its funny, I know almost nothing about cabs and keep reading here about things like Xmax etc and how important it is... If you look at the raw specs it would seem like these should come up short against the competition but my ears keep telling me different... It sounds to me like whatever calculations Mike has done with regards to matching the driver to this enclosure has turned out pretty well
5. Mrs C supports me in my musical endeavours and if she didn't we wouldn't be together... We are both adults with no children so if either of us are unhappy we can just leave, I'd much rather she left me than tried to make me into something I'm not. Having said that, if we had children I'd give up playing out in bands altogether as I would want to be doing my fair share of parenting duites. I'd never expect her to look after the kids all the time whilst I was out gigging. Obviously if music was my job there would be a compromise, but as I'm just playing for fun I'd have no issues packing it in if I had more serious responsibilities elsewhere.
6. I currently have a pair of Purple Chili 112s with the tweeter but have been thinking recently about swapping them out for a pair of berg CN112s as I was very impressed with the clarity at volume when I tried them out and thought they would be a good match for my Glockenklang, not that there is anything wrong with the PCs, just one of those grass is always greener things... However played a gig on saturday with no PA support and the PCs sounded huge. Deep room filling bass whilst still being tight and punchy. Proper seperation of notes without losing any power at the bottom end. They may not be the smallest 112s out there (the cabinets are actually pretty big) or the lightest (14kg) but I'm prepared to put up with the flaws for the sound and volume they managed on Saturday night... I'll be keeping them for the foreseable future.
7.
Not a lot of love for the Boss' then......?
It's not a bad unit... far from it, I've just discovered that I have very little use for effects... Judging by the general consensus, I'd give the zoom one a go.
8. I have a boss me50b however apart from a quick blast on the day it arrived I have never even plugged t in... That isnt really useful advice is it sorry.
9.
Rob, it's normal and not an abnormality. For an Mk I and Mk II, the typical electronics layout is the jack is closest to the strap pin. For an Mk III, the layout is a bit different since the body contours differently (it'll be the same for a 4, 5, or a 6 string Mk III), so the DI is closest to the strap pin.
Mystery solved... Thanks for that ☺
10. Most enjoyable gig last night at the constitution in Camden, great support bands, great sound and packed out.. Probably the best gig I've ever done, not the biggest but definitely the one I enjoyed the most.
11. Morning gents, Noticed a random abnormality that could only possibly be of any interest to those in this thread... There is a lovey fretless mk1 for sale on Andy baxters website and the DI / jack are the opposite way round to my mk3, ie. mine has the DI nearest the strap pin. Which way round is yours?
12. The thing is... I know i'm still going to go, despite all my moaning it is something to do for the afternoon. I'd much rather go to a BC bash to be honest, chance to try some interesting stuff in a relaxed environment.
13. most of the bands I've been in...
14. All my speaker and instrument cables are OBBM. I suspect unless I lose one (either due to theft or drunkeness) I will never need to buy another cable.
15. Nothing at the moment... worrying times... waiting patiently for my incoming basses but more than happy with my existing setup.
16. I've got to the point where I pretty much filter out what he says... I think my brain is developing a moron filter whereby it blocks the opinions of idiots automatically before I actually hear them.
17. all the cool instruments were taken...
18. I like both this and the Blue... Lovely looking and a little bit different.
19. October Rust by Type O Negative was the popular choice of the time when I was at college...
20.
I've just read this whole thread in an attempt to talk myself into coming , it hasn't worked , Ive also got a budget for a new bass I'm considering (after always saying I'd only buy second hand for years) Not being negative , just feeding back my impressions of the show from here are limited stands, with lots of people slapping everywhere
My only experience was last years show, I understand it has been better in previous years but it was a bit light on exhibitors... The slapping thing doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother others I'm more concerned about the lack of gear to check out.
21. They will never catch on those fender thingies...
22.
Yes, what IS that? The thinking seems to be that if you have a 5-string bass you're somehow going to play too many notes and what's worse, probably not shut up, stand at the back and play roots and fifths like I want you to so that my great guitar skilz can come to the fore, thanks very much please.
I've had this a few times... Fortunately I find it very easy to ignore other peoples opinions so it doesnt really bother me. Those that really cared about how many strings my bass has would have to kick me out of the band as I certainly wouldn't be letting anyone dictate what instrument I play... this hasn't happened yet. ...well not for the strings thing anyway. I was recently disposed of for being too jazz... whatever that means... I was also recently turned down for being 'too white' which is true to be honest as I would have looked pretty silly in that band and not really fitted thier image... they were damn good though with loads of room for interesting bass... shame...
23. No-one ever says anything to me during or after gigs... nor would I want them too... If anyone tries to engage me in conversation I usually just pretend I'm foreign and don't understand English...
24. Crotch Walnut...
25. I had a thumb NT6 for a brief period last year and when you took the strings off the bridge fell apart, just a matter of tightening everything up in the end but it was a little disconcerting... It was an exceptional instrument though...
