It does seem the underlying trend that no-one cuts frequencies anymore. It's all about the bass after all... Even mixing at home I cut like crazy - start with a basic 80Hz cut on most ibnstruments and raise it to at least 150Hz. This is on instruments that are nothing to do with bass and it's often surprising what does contain bass, so I will cut guitars, synths, even cymbal samples. I'm with Truckstop - cutting is the key.

Up next, tuning reference should be 432Hz. etc.

Fender Telecaster Baritone - my current fave. Replaced stock pick-ups with Catswhisker ones, it came with Fernandes Sustainer pick-up already installed. Added Greasebucket mod to tone pot. Currently tuned B E A D F# B. Yamaha Drop-6 - odd one this. Currently tuned BBB bbb unison tuning - three low strings, three mid strings, for Glenn Branca-type stuff. Actually as a guitarist I noticed I was getting lower and lower in pitch and eventually just decided I should get a bass! Love my baritones though.

On the synth forums they always recommend definitely not using WD40 for pots and sliders and to use Caig DeOxit instead. Not easy to come by in the shops but Amazon and eBay have it.

[/quote] I've seen him live quite a few times as he curated a season at the Barbican which included Glass, LDavid Lang, Julia Wolfe (who dedicated here piece to the late Steve Martland who I didn't knopw had died a couple of days before), Tristan Perich, The Villagers and even Jarvis Cocker. He would open wih these Indian-type drones which I liked (sounds like that album might be similar), but I didn't really like this big choral piece he performed. I'll have to hear more before I'm convinced but I think Drones sounds like it's up my alley (I love drone music).

Hadn't heard of this album you mentioned though, which is odd as I like David Lang too who is on there, plus it's done by some Icebreaker guys who are a great modern ensemble (along with Bang On A Can from the USA, featuring Lang). Not easily come by even on Amazon, but a quick Google revealed a site where you can buy direct from them, which is what I've just done. Cheers

I had the money for a 4003 in 2012 so I bought one. Now that some muppet on the internet has enlightened I will whip myself accordingly. Of course unlike him I won't actually sell it to someone else as that would be hypocrisy of the highest order, I will hold a ritual bonfire with an effigy of John Hall on top.

Can't say I've ever been impressed with the sound at Roundhouse for any gig I've been to. I like the venue but maybe they need to hang some giant 'mushrooms' like that other round building that's acoustically challenged: Royal Albert Hall. Maybe round buildings just don't lend themselves to good sound. Also it never seems loud enough, and this is from someone who hates over loud gigs.

Sure it's interesting but I don't just accept stuff, I like to investigate and come to my own conclusions. Ask your tutor where he got that number from, because if it's any of that stuff I linked to it is nonsense. You don't even have to use common sense if you are lacking in that, just do the maths (literally in this case). It doesn't add up. Picking a different centre frequency does make your music sound different, but it won't make it more harmonious with the universe or the water in your body. These people seem to conveniently forget that we use a compromised equal temperament system. So your start frequency gets divided in some nasty ways. You'd need some system based on pure fractions to maintain the 'purity' of that number (if there was such a thing). Additionally, using any kind of fretted system (excluding compensated frets) like guitars and bass you're using a further compromise of the already compromised equal tempered system.

432Hz is often cited as some mystic frequency. The proof ranges from the resonant frequency of the earth divided by the diameter or some such nonsense. Also some Buddist temple somewhere has 432 statues and the ratio of the pyramids is 432, the Moon figures in somewhere. All sorts of cobblers. I thought everyone had seen this nonsense by now. The problem is none of the so-called maths works.
