Roni Size -- "Reprazent" on Jools Holland '97
cLepto-bass replied to Rosh's topic in General Discussion
I watch this performance almost every week. Such a great show. -
I'd have to say Flea simply because of his work on the first Mars Volta album. Chilli's bore me as does Mark King.
whats the point in posting if its negative? its only my opinion and i know this is yours, but i wonder if you could entertain us with your bass playing like Marcus Miller can.i doubt it....sorry im having a bad day..
The reason for my remark is the same as your postive one; You felt the need to share your view with everyone so I thought since this was a forum that caters for bass players, I would add my reply. Sorry if it offends. For the record, no I cant play like Mr Miller and in all fairness, neither would I want to. Its a style thing. That smooth American RnB sound doesnt excite me like it does others.

I was just wondering if anyone could clue me in as to what the going rate for pristine condition Fender MM is today. I am making enquiries on behalve of a mate so have limited info on the bass but I know that it is in great cosmetic and playing condition. Thanks in advance.
Not wishing to derail this thread - but out of interest, which bass players are you talking about, would like to check them out ?
Tom Jenkinson is a personal favorite. Very different to the silky smooth skills of Mr. Miller. You'll need to search Squarepusher.
Each to their own. I did find the statement that he was an OK bass player highly amusing. Makes one wonder what you have to do to be a good bass player But like I said, each to their own.
I suppose its just a stylisitc thing. At the end of the day, its all subjective and the bass players that I really rate get little to no mention on these sites. Its no big deal, its jut that MM isnt my thing.

Back up for sale due to time wasting buyer. I recently bought this bass on a whim having never even touched a Warwick before and sadly I must admit to myself that even though is sounds brilliant, its not the one for me. Anyway, as for this bass. It really is a belter. I really wish I could get on with the playing position of this awesome bass but all those years of Fender bass playing have made it hard to play anything else. It sounds fantastic, capable of some truely tight and punchy bass tones as well as a more well rounded fundemental bass sound. The condition is brilliant, havent managed to find a mark on it yet and I have been sure to keep good care of the wood with regular waxing. Super fast neck and a low string height make it a doddle to move up and down the neck and strings. It is currently strung up with TI's flats but dont let that put you off because they sound great with plenty of top end. Serial number indicates this bass was made in April 2003 which makes this model 100% German! It has a Swamp Ash body with natural oil finish along with Ovangkol neck and chrome hardware. 9v active pre amp gives control of bass and treble along with the option of passive mode should that be your thing. Included in the sale is a Warwick Rockbass gig bag and I will through in the tin of wax since I wont be needing it anymore. All relevant info can be found on the Warwick Website. My apologies for the photo's, lighting in my flat was terrible but will get some better ones up just as soon as I can. Please dont hesitate if you have any questions. Thanks EDIT: Now up for cash sale, looking for £450 + p&p.
YOU ARE JEALOUS OF HIS FREEDOMS!
I am not quite sure what that is supposed to mean but there is nothing to his playing that I am jealous of. All I am saying is that his music (note: not bass playing) leaves me wanting more from him and the band. It bores the life out of me.

This album, like much of his stuff is over-rated. I dont doubt he is an OK bass player but his music leaves me feeling cold and bored.
SNIP... Get someone to look over the details for you who has no interest in bass or bass gear - as they will see things a lot clearer for you.
I couldnt agree with this more. I dont have a horror story to back this up but in my experience you should definately get an outside opinion on all the details. To be fair, there is probably nothing to worry about. A close friend of mine has some sort of deal with Warwick (lucky git) and as far as I know he has never had an issue. All he is asked to do is update them a few times a year with band details, gigs/releases ect but other than that, he is laughing.
What sort of personal requirements are you looking for? If you are looking for a non Fender jazz, there is bound to be an off the shelf custom jazz from an established "custom shop" that will meet your needs.
A few details to play with: 5 String Jazz shape (tuned E-C) Natural Oil Ash body Maple undotted neck Decent 9v pre amp Unsure on pickups yet but likely to be Jazz variation (maybe Delano) I am aware of sites such as Warmoth etc but I have no idea on how to construct such an item. I know this request seems like one of those 'splitting hair moments' but it is a real ambition to have the Jazz I really want.

Wow! Thanks for all the advice people, much appreciated. What I am about to say might upset or annoy some people but here goes. - What are the chances of having a bass built that follows the outline of a traditional Jazz Bass perhaps even with same headstock but including various personal requirements? Of course one could buy a Fender but they dont do an option for what I have in mind and even if they did I feel Fender's build quality is debatable. I understand that this is an odd request. Any further info would be great. Thanks again.
