Herbie Flowers replica Jazz bass £1100 collected (SALE PENDING)
What a fantastic bass! I had a Fender Custom Shop '60, but couldn't get on with it. How does Wes's creation stack up against the CS basses?
Thats hard to say. It has better pickups than Fender CS, lots of old Fender hardware and is very particular in style (nylon tapewounds etc), as its trying to emulate Herbie's iconic bass. In many respects, though, its very similar to a Fender CS, eg, the neck, being from a 62RI (but slightly re-worked), feels just like a Fender CS relic. -
As the original FS thread was a bit messy and included two basses, I am kicking off a fresh one. For sale here is my Herbie Flowers replica Jazz made by BC's talented luthier Wes Steed. Its a wonderful bass with black nylon tapewound strings on for a real DB vibe and is a great copy of the iconic 1959 bass used on Walk on the Wild Side and Space Oddity (missing only the original's fuzz switch). Its not one for slapping or fast finger funk, unless you swap the strings over. I paid £1400 for the bass as it had £800 of original early '60s Fender parts (listed below). Given the state of the market I will now accept £1100. Specs: 61 Tuners + 62 bushings and screws 62 bridge + screws All screws from 60/61 including the neck plate screws String tree 61 with screw 59 thumbrest with screws Fullerton 83 RI jazz stack knobs and early bell plate Hand wired repro harness Suhr Vintage spec handwound pickup Neck from a 62RI Fender Jazz but re-profiled by Wes Wearing Herbie-correct Rotosound Tru Bass strings Note: headstock has a Fender decal which has partly scraped away (this does make it look authentic and could easily be replaced for a fiver). Comes in soft gig bag only (no hard case) Weighs 8.77 pounds Picture below is one of Wes' from his build thread http://basschat.co.uk/topic/117779-herbie-flowers-jazz-bass-replica/page__hl__herbie__fromsearch__1 and was taken before he applied the headstock decal DSCN2065.jpg I don't have a bass-sized box and I don't want to put Mrs C through waiting in all day for Interparcel pickup so this is meet-up/collected only in London

Just spotted this on eBay. I sold this to French BC'er Lafrite around the start of this year. Its light, with a slim neck profile and helpful side marker lines on the striped ebony board. If interested, I reckon it may pay to drop him a PM through BC. Here is a reminder of the specs from an earlier post (note strings changed per post immediately before this one but could easily be switched back to Herbie-correct Tru Bass strings if you so desired):
I paid £1400 for the bass as it has £800 of original early '60s Fender parts (listed below). I would like as close as possible to what I paid although I will accept a small discount as the Fender decal (which was applied to the top of the headstock) has partly scraped away (although this does make it look authentic and it could easily be replaced for a fiver). In-line with the original bass which inspired it, it is wearing chunky black nylon Rotosound TruBass strings on which make it play more like a DB and which have a rich, thick thumping type sound with virtually no treble - as per Walk on the Wild Side, Space Oddity etc (on which the original was played). Its not one for slapping or fast finger funk, unless you swap the strings over. Specs: 61 Tuners + 62 bushings and screws 62 bridge + screws All screws from 60/61 including the neck plate screws String tree 61 with screw 59 thumbrest with screws Fullerton 83 RI jazz stack knobs and early bell plate Hand wired repro harness Suhr Vintage spec handwound pickup Neck from a 62RI Fender Jazz but re-profiled by Wes Weighs 8.77 pounds Picture below is one of Wes' from his build thread and was taken before he applied the headstock decal I don't have a bass-sized box and I don't want to put Mrs C through waiting in all day for Interparcel pickup so this is meet-up/collected only in London
Due to a moment of weakness I have spent some of the proceeds of my recent selling activity. Thus the Herbie bass is still available at £1200 ono (try me). it's now wearing Status black nylon 45-105 strings so it plays more 'normally' than with the thick Tru Bass strings on while retaining the DB type vibe and the look of the original bass. Collected from London only as no hard case.

Reminder of last Rattlin Bone gig of 2011. Cabaret noir, voodoo swamp blues and a burlesque artiste. What more could you want on a Saturday evening. Think we will be onstage about 11pm for about 45 minutes and are likely to do a selection of our regular songs plus a couple of new ones, including our latest single, 'Who Do You Love' http://rattlinbone.com/2011/who-do-you-love-2/

Many congrats Laurence. Well worth the protracted wait

Barefaced Big One (15" + 6"; weighing 40-odd pounds) would also fit the bill, I would suggest. I happen to have one I want to move on (albeit one BC'er has first dibs and I am waiting on confirmation from him) Here's a pic of mine (grill a bit scratched up but could be replaced fo £25)
Good drummer - used to love this kind of stuff a few years ago now!
Yep, the drummer was incredible - we broke up when he left as we couldn't find another drummer that could play his lines! This song (with full death metal 'cookie monster' vocals) has just about one of the hardest-to-maintain drum lines I can imagine http://www.4shared.com/audio/IibZj3SX/01_Death_Mask.html

Nice. Reminds me a lot of early Bad Company .... which is good

This is the title instrumental from Nyx' 2007 album 'Torn from Chaos'. You'll recognise the Metallica influences here. You'll also see its light years from what I do now* http://search.4share...Torn+From+Chaos * played on Warwick Thumb 5 BO for the sake of bass nerdistry

Acoustic Image amp - any good for electric bass?
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thanks all. I am thinking a Dave Hall DHA DI EQ with phantom power (£84 http://www.davehallamps.co.uk/page42.html) as a preamp might be just the ticket. Hmmmm -
Thx 51m0n! RB has been described as sounding "like Tom Waits has gone to hell and started a voodoo band"

I have an AI Clarus+ which produces the clearest, most faithful representation of upright bass of any amp I've tried (my opinion). I put it through an AI cab or - for more volume - a Wizzy 12. I've never considered using it for electric bass as I have always assumed it to be DB-specific (the features are clearly DB tailored, eg, phase switch, notch filter, mic input). However, this means I have two rigs, one of which is not being used (my electric rig, based around an Aguilar TH500). This is clearly a bit superfluous if the AI works well in an electric setting. Thus, I just wondered if any of you doublers have tried an AI for electric gigs and how it measures up? Thanks!

Thank you chaps, much appreciated. Sorry if I didn't reply earlier. Have tried with no success to get this on national radio so far (Robert Elms etc) but we made it on to Spanish Radio 3!
I don't see any of the 'controversial' threads any more because I'm banned from Off Topic, and honestly it's improved the forum for me massively. And it means I spend less of my time time arguing the toss about nothing with knobheads and more time playing bass. Bi-winning.
If I could be banned from OT would probably improve my experience too. OK, off to find an OT thread and call someone a tosser

I now post very infrequently (other than in FS/Feedback columns, there's a surprise!) as I have found the atmosphere has changed. Yes I know a thread says that every year but I am now in my fourth year of membership and I genuinely believe that to be the case. The tipping point for me was arguing with a troll past midnight on a Friday night and suddenly realising that this is plain ridiculous. Also, to be fair, I was spending way to much time here and not enough time actually playing bass or interacting with my family. I will say, though, that the double bass forum is full of friendly helpful people and has never, to my mind, crossed any lines. Wonder what that says?

Pierre bought a very nice fretless from me. Faultless, friendly transaction Enjoy the bass, Pierre!!!
