1. Chris Kelly in SE London (BC name chrkelly) - pro DB'er and very nice guy (although I've not had lessons with him) or I can personally vouch for lessons from jakesbass who is based in Surrey (maybe a bit too far for him but doesn't hurt to PM)
2. Bump! £100 for a quality PA monitor with all the paraphernalia .... Or a very good head-height DB speaker
3. Hmmm, not persuaded by the Aguilar for upright bass - not clear enough (great for electric but that's a different kettle of fish). Think I am going to hang on to the AI rig for the time being and put this FS thread on ice. Plus I managed to sell a couple of other items yesterday, which was helpful. So this is withdrawn. Maybe I should base my rig around this, per Beedster's post above, and flog the Aguilar instead? Not sure about that, so will stick with what I have for now.
4. I know how highly you rate these cabs Lozz Hope all is well, mate
5.
I miss this bass. Hope it goes to a good home!
It will be kept in the BassChat family, Wes! See post one above yours
6.
Are you going to be using this with Rattlin' Bone?
Yep, the plan is to use this when I can't bring a DB along and on non-UK gigs (we hope to do another Portugal tour). Plus we are working on an acoustic quartet spin-off of Rattlin Bone members and this bass will be perfect for that.
Is the neck and fingerboard slightly DB like the Takamine or is it more guitarish?
Its quite like a fretless Precision neck, I would say. It doesn't have the heavy radius of the Takamine
7.
Not a bass I'm familiar with at all, I'll go look for some piccies - assuming I can filter out the inevitable ice cream results.
Here's Magnum porn thread (no moustaches) http://basschat.co.uk/topic/157254-ovation-magnum/page__p__1398903__hl__magnum%20fretless__fromsearch__1#entry1398903
8.
Is the Bruce Johnson Bass the one that was in the Gallery?
Yep, but I bought it privately from Dave Swift after I saw it advertised on his website
9. Thanks Chris! Anyone interested in the Clarus+? Two channels, one for mic (or other instrument), one for piezo/mag p/u. Way more powerful/headroom than earlier AI heads as well at 800W (at 4 ohms)
10. Nice one, glad to have hooked you and Steve up

Joe bought my Barefaced cab. Very nice guy, all tickety-boo! Recommended
12. Its VERY double bass-ish - quite rich and thuddy sounding, not much treble, and the D/G strings really don't ring out, especially as you travel up towards the dusty end. I practiced the whole Rattlin Bone set last night and it really sounds the part. If I wanted a modern hi-fi sounding fretless, then this really isn't it, in fact its miles away. But it is just great as a retro, low end instrument.
13. Beautiful bass in wonderful condition for over 30 years old! Wish I could say the same ...
14. Antigua looks great with a black s/p
15.
Good call!
Hi John! yep, the Aguilar TH500 head through the Wizzy sounds superb with my Precision (very old school) and there's a guy on TB who I've discovered recommends the TH500 for upright bass. So I'm going to give that a try And Keith ... I feel sure there will be more trades at some point! If I ever get flush again, I keep casting envious eyes on your fretless 5er Wal!
16. Did you ever try Kolstein Heritage strings? Steels but very smooth and lower tension than other steels I have tried, and a bit higher tension than Silver Slaps. Sort of like the DB equivalent of TI Flats
17. I can only confirm part of your question which is that they are definitely noticeably higher tension than Silver Slaps. I didn't get on with the tension and took them, off my bass immediately (and flogged them)
18. Will do! When I was last up on biz in Edinburgh I saw a Western Swing band, Stretch Dawrson and the Mending Hearts, who were pretty good (very good DB player). I bet you've played with them, given the genre similarity
19.
Ok, so I'm as bad as Clarky....and Beedster
Not that bad, mate Thats a rather sexy looking beast - reminds me a bit of a Magnum fretless but less angular. Very tasty
20. lol! Quite cool but, at $6,500 upwards it doesn't have my name on, thankfully!!!!! I will stick with my cheap rubber skull (£10) wedged on top of the scroll of my Ampeg
21. Cool! I'll watch out for that - the Mrs loves Come Dine With Me so I think it will be on our Sky+ even if I'm out I do like a nice bit of gypsy jazz from time to time (Bireli Lagrene my favourite)
22. Given I am gigging a feedback-free Ampeg Baby Bass (and so don't need all the functionality that a high end acoustic amp has) and that I have two rigs (electric/acoustic) which is somewhat superfluous, I have had a re-think on what I need gear-wise. I intend to go back to having just one rig for both acoustic and electric. This will also save me a fair amount of money .... which is nice. So I have the following pristine condition rig up for grabs: - a 2011 Acoustic Image Clarus+ (twin channel; 800W @4 ohms; RRP £995) http://www.gollihurm...LARUS_PLUS.html WIth gig bag - a 2011 Contra EXSIII 4 ohm extension cab (RRP 450) http://www.gollihurm...ER_CABINET.html With slip cover The Contra cab covers small gigs and is as faithful at reproducing a DB as the Clarus. For bigger gigs (or large bands) it probably doesn't carry enough weight and you will need a bigger cab (like my Wizzy 12, which was for sale here originally but I have decided to keep) So this is a complete gigging package for the double bass player and its in fantastic condition. In the first instance, I would rather sell the two as a whole package, picked up from West London. I am going to put the combined price at roughly a third off list, so £1100. This is a bargain as the gear is in mint condition (the cab in particular has never left my house). If I have to break it up, which I would prefer not to do, it would be £800 for Clarus+ and £350 for Contra - excluding postage.
23. Just acquired a fretless Bruce Johnson (Ampeg AUB-2 replica) and it looks rather hot (and quite voodoo!) next to my Ampeg Baby Bass IMHO Here's more on Bruce Johnson's basses, if interested: http://www.xstrange.com/aeb2main.html
24.
So it has the original action too? Crikey
Based on what I hear of Herbie's bass, the action on mine is a big improvement! I would describe it as medium. Was really trying to make the point that its a bass you dig in, with the big thick Tru Bass strings, rather than a super-fast/slick 'modern' Jazz
