1. FWIW I just tried my new Bass Max on my Kolstein. It sounds hugely better than the nasal, reedy mid- heavy sounding Planet Wing pickup I had on it before ( the stock pickup with this DB). Nice coverage from deep bass through to the upper registers, without that horrid finger noise or middiness I had before. I am really quite happy with this. I can only suggest Kev that your Bass Max is damaged or alternatively that it's just sods law and it simply is not compatible with your bass/string/bridge set up.
2. Beautiful Nick. My fave colour of the non-standard 'retro' schemes, just trumping fiesta red. Hope it plays as well as it looks mate
3. Hi Elena! Are you a bass player?
4. Still nothing as scary as hearing a shrill female voice yell "Clarky, where are you?"
5. A number of you know Malcolm Healey, the best repairer of DBs in SW London who also makes a rather nice DB or two. Just as an FYI, when I took in my bass to get the soundpost and bridge fixed, Malcolm said he is semi-retiring and closing the shop in Sutton down. He is going to concentrate on building DBs from his home in Boxhill, Surrey (near Reigate, just south of the M25) but will also need some repair work to help pay the bills. For those who want to use his services (or indeed order a new hand-built DB) his new details are as follows: Malcolm & Jane Healey Violins and Basses Boxhill House, Boxhill Road, Tadworth Surrey KT20 7PW 01737 844164 Google map: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=safari&q=Boxhill&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF-8&ei=p7ASUITyNPOb1AXYg4G4BQ&ved=0CEcQ_AUoAg
6. Well that all ended well. Drive to Malcolm Healey's was reasonably OK, bit of a monster drive back .... but Malcolm reset sound post, reassembled bridge (which is adjustable with a Full Circle) and set it up to play, all for the ludicrously reasonable price of £10
7. and my fave cover by Metallica, their version of Loverman by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4Tl18T38P4
8. The Misfits' tasteful Last Caress as interpreted by Metallica http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj-F9CUz_iA
9. I think it was indeed when I tried some higher tension flats (I have tended to use Chromes historically) that I noticed this problem, Jas. Somewhere in the recesses of BC's old posts I did put up an enquiry about solving the issue. Great news its been sorted and - even better - for free! Good one, Fender!
10. I have a Planet Wing piezo on my Kolstein and all the comments made in the OP about the BassMax could be applied to this. It sounds frankly rubbish in the home, amplified, on what is an extraordinarily beautiful sounding bass acoustically. I have just bought a BassMax to see if this improves things
11. Me again! James just bought some strings off me. All tickety boo, in order, etc etc. Happy to recommend James as a good guy to do biz with
12. The Killers of the more modern genre and Kings of Leon to name but two with frequent Hooky-esque lines
13. Even if you don't like Hooky or Joy Division/New Order, this bass riff is utterly brilliant at sorting out the intonation on a bass - I play it every time I get a new bass (which is lets face it quite often) to help me do the setup properly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVdheR0bUwI
14. If we are allowed to post our own stuff (Jake!) here is my old band's sleazy New Orleans style cover of Tom Waits' Yesterday is Here, which i am still fond of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI18ZZ7MCPs
15. and this. How is this not a memorable riff, even if in the high register? Its not funky but it hits the spot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGMDBppWBOo&feature=related
16. Try this. So powerful and a nice bass riff too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zo4JdTfDw0
17. Sorry to hear this Al, I know you were looking forward to giving the EUB a proper airing. TBH, he sounds a dick. There will be other bands - DB is 'hot' right now so keep your eyes peeled on Gumtree and Formingbands etc
18. For KevB as its the one I thought of too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqfqVDHNW6c
19. A smidgeon of bad luck with the DBs but - at the risk of sounding like some TV engangelist - I consider myself a lucky person - I fell into a great band and just celebrated 21 happy years of marriage. Try not to puke everyone Put in that context, a dent and a broken bridge ain't such a biggie!
20. [sup]T'was indeed a hell of a bang. On further reflection - and taking on board the sensible advice above - I am not going to attempt an amateur bodge job with a pointed, curvey piece of metal! If the traffic is tolerable on Friday afternoon I will head on down to Morden - more likely it will have to wait until late August[/sup]
21. In principle I'd be up for that but just googled and a curvey pointy thing costing £49 appeared. Eeek
22. Good job I didn't mention I work in a bank
23. Luckily I do
