1. Dave bought a preamp off me, all good, like the time before ... and the time before etc etc
2. This is a time-limited "feeler" - if there's no real interest in the next few days I will remove the FS ad in the interest of fairness to the potential seller of the KK Baby Bass I am interested in (ie, so he can advertise his BB for sale here and elsewhere). Like I say, its no biggie either way but please get in touch soon if you are interested. I will set a deadline of Sunday evening here. In between times, here is what a Latin player can do with a Baby Bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ4GP4HwWBo
3.
Nice bass - by all accounts that must have been a pretty smelly gig then Clarky?
What do you mean? I had a bath that month
4.
More photos of this bass (pre-upgrades) in action at the Greenford Carnival in 2012. http://s1128.photobu...ford%20Carnival I liked this bass so much that, when I sold it back to Clarky, I went out and ordered a KK BabyBass to replace it.
thanks Jack! I have been offered a KK Vintage in the same dark sunburst colour scheme as your KK but can't afford to buy it if my Ampeg doesn't sell first, which is why this is a feeler to gauge interest If there's no interest, its no sweat as I do like my Ampeg (just wish the neck was a bit thicker)
5. Just found a pic of my bass here in my old flickr account: http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ This shows it with the old metal bridge, before I swapped it over to the maple bridge
6. This is a feeler to gauge interest in my Ampeg 1960s Baby Bass. It has all the original parts including the metal bridge (these often go missing) and cool old velvet-lined hard case (which is a bit whiffy and could do with an airing - see below!). Additionally I had a custom padded gig bag made (by KK Baby Bass) and swapped the bridge for a maple bridge with added Shadow SH950 wing pickup (the metal bridge is safe in the case). As a result of my additions (which mirror what Azola did with their BB Reissues in the 1990s), this gives the choice of the slightly dark and relatively quiet original diaphragm pickup or a more double bass-y piezo pickup sound (with stronger treble and mids). Barring a few very minor surface scrapes and some small abrasions on the back of the neck (which is very skinny front to back, like a Jazz bass rather than a thick old double bass) it is in quite amazing condition. I would be after £2,000 collected (not keen on posting). Thats what it changed hands for between Mr_Bassman and i and then between Happy Jack and I - although I have since spent around £250 on the gigbag, pickup and new bridge One small caveat here - Baby basses from the 60s are encased in a kind of hard plastic called UVEX which over time let's out some kind of harmless odour. It means they have a slightly odd smell (think cheese!), especially if kept locked away in the hard case for any length of time (50-ish years in the case means the latter needs either a serious dose of Febreze or being kept in garage, as I do!). Thought it best mentioned! I have sold and bought this back before, so why sell? Well Mrs C won't let me keep it in the sitting room due to the unusual odour (she's more of a Jo Malone candle kind of girl) and the ultra skinny neck is not that comfortable for my damaged left hand. I am considering getting a KK replica with chunkier neck, but only if there is genuine interest in this beauty. Don't have a pic of mine to hand right now but here's a couple of vids of me playing the bass:
7. My bass was weighed with digital luggage sales by the way, so it's very accurate In the first half of the 70s Jazz basses were usually under 10 pounds, in my experience, whereas in the second half of the 70s they often run to several pounds more (usually 10-11 pounds and occasionally a shoulder wrenching 12+!) If you check your PMs, womblelife, I have sent you the serial number
8. The case has gone so it would come in a Protection Racket semi hard gig bag, as seen in the last photo on this thread. According to James (see p1 of this thread) it is all original although I have replaced the scratchplate (it comes with the original of course as well). From discussing with Fender aficionados, it was one of the last before they changed to 3 bolt necks nd the bullet truss rod. As for the neck, it plays very nicely with low (but not ultra low) action (c3mm at 12 th fret)
9.
Extremely sexy instrument.
Why thank you. My wife said that when we first met (actually that's a lie)
This is exactly what I'm after. I've been saving for a nice 70s jazz but still have a little way to go, if I get any bites on the Sandberg JM4 and Fender mim 50s precision I have for sale soon then I'll be in a position to take this off you.
In which case I wish you the best of luck with those sales
10. I have bought a couple of sets of strings from Rabbie and all were 3/4
11.
pm'd Frank
looks like the strings are heading your way Mods please close this thread
12. I had an Ehrlund on my old Kolstein and we play pretty loud (drums, guitar, mandolin, two vox). It coped just fine except in the Hootananny in Brixton (where there are big dub reggae subs under the vibrating wooden stage!). That said I always had a BassMax in the wing slot just in case, as I was not sure I trusted the Ehrlund
13. I have had some unhappy times with Danny Thompson strings. 1. I got a prototype set that had a manufacturing issue which led to an aborted sale by me (I didn't notice the issue as I found them too high tension and took them off my bass very quickly - they are like Spiro Mediums but 'stiffer' to my mind) 2. I refunded the buyer and contacted the Bass Centre. They sent me replacements for three strings and I paid for a fourth to get a full new set. 3. Still too high tension for my bass, I took them off almost immediately again and sold them to new BCer elfinio (aka Frank). 4. He subsequently found the D had a winding issue and I am in process of refunding him too I am totally fed up and don't want these bl**dy strings. If anyone wants a set of E/A/G (you can get a new D from BassCentre for £30-odd I think) please PM Frank (address here http://basschat.co.uk/user/31419-elfinio/ )
14. Any amp will work with the right preamp in front. also you can go straight to PA with a preamp. A used PlatPro would be ideal if you can get one for comfortably under £100. So your signal chain would be DB>piezo pickup>preamp>PA Or DB>piezo pickup>preamp>amp/combo with PA feed from preamp or amp/combo
15. I had a Mike Lull where the action was incredibly low and I found that it showed up every single flaw in my technique (as the frets are so close to the strings you get all sorts of unwanted sounds if you don't dampen or strike cleanly). I like my action low but wafer thin mint low was a step too far
16. J-tone do good basic, cheap n cheerful copies of a Bass Max for about £30 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/J-tone-Big-double-Bass-Pick-up-/200613316399 A brand name piezo like a Shadow or Bass Max usually runs to about £100 new or £60 used on BassChat
17. Any piezo wing pickup (Shadow, Bass Max etc) just squeezes into the side slots in the bridge. So it can be quickly added in or removed. If the wing slots are too wide, a simple shim (paper, cardboard etc) is all that's needed to wedge in the pickup
18. The newest Headway is pretty amazing, if pricey. This is what I use. It has a high pass filter (albeit a fixed one) and while my fdeck has much more control of the low frequencies it lacks that all-important XLR out http://www.headwaymusicaudio.com/product/edb-2/
19.
How much cash you offerin' boy?
Touche
20.
First in the queue, OK?
Honest, guv, not selling this one! You know where I am Jack if you wanted to trade my 1880s DB for your (my old) 3/4 Zeller plus a large wadge of cash
21. Yep, its my third Busetto. The first I sold to Bassace so that i could get the removable necked version. I then sold the latter to help raise some money (expensive summer, three "significant" family birthdays etc) to Scottish pro bass player Roy Percy who seems very happy with the bass after some slight modifications. I still hankered after a Busetto though and - having thought I'd sold my 1975 Jazz - placed an order with Barrie K. Learned my lesson and this one is a keeper. Just need to sell that Jazz though!
22. Bump with reminder of final price drop ^^^^ PS, 3 more views will take it to 10,000. Someone must want this beauty
23.
i enjoyed that a lot!
Thanks Luke! Here we are live, in case interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0noHL4khCeM To add another band to the list, jimijimmi's rock band Casino look very good based on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJOuhbvivJk
24. £2000 final offer, or I will have to put this aside and look for a sale at a better time of year
25. Hi Roger, it has the stock Planet Wing pickup which - despite my previous misgivings - actually sounds very good through my Phil Jones Briefcase combo. OHM: yes I am naughty, I spent the proceeds of my 1975 Jazz sale on this (and a bit more) after a sale had been agreed, only for the other guy to back out at the last minute
