1.
IMO not only is that a great cover, but it's probably the best thing that Cockney Rebel ever released.
Yeah, that blows.
2.
My favourite Beatles cover
Sounds like the themesong from "Friends."
3. Who's a better bass player-- Ron Carter or Flea? What's a better flavor -- chocolate or sirloin steak? It's so silly. Bonham played much better music though.
4.
ooohhh i dont know, i like this...
I was appreciating what he was doing so why did I find myself fast forwarding every 15 seconds? It's strictly taste but I find VW technically dazzling yet utterly unengaging. As for worst Beatles cover -- no contest -- William Shatner's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,
5. Straightjackets song good. Looks like "Man or Astroman" OD'd on Devo! lol (Can't really hear the bass on that one).
6. Any bass would be fine -- as long as it's green. lol The bass tone on those records aren't especially iconic. I like surf music and always felt the bass could be stronger but the recording equipment at the time couldn't support it. Here's an example of bass heavy surf that got my attention. (For one reason or another). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNdxFnCdlxo
7. Actually for gigging, one bass is usually fine. But different basses do different things and also make you play differently. That's fun for me, so I want an assortment to go to those "other places."
8.
Jim Lea of Slade did a truly mean bass / violin solo in his day. Here's the one he did at Slade's last ever UK show in Liverpool in 1983
Holy cow, that's hilarious.
9.
WINNER!!
Seriously?
10.
Hm. I'd call it reasoned dislike rather than vehement hatred. Good reasons too. best, bert
Hey, pick anything -- any musician, any song, any film, any book -- and I can a reason to dislike it. It's easy. Someone can find a cure for cancer and someone else will have a problem with it. lol
11.
I played for a couple of years with a band that did a very heavy, hard rock cover of Insomnia by Faithless which was guaranteed to fill the dance floor! Be careful you don't allow yourself to get too gimmicky with making this your thing though. Saw a band in Norwich years ago who's entire set was made up of lightening fast shouty punk covers of pop songs. Hilarious as I found their version of My Heart Will Go On from Titanic, it did get a bit tired after about 15 minutes! As it happens my band recently played a gig where the support was booked by the venue. The guitarist from afore mentioned punk band was playing with them and this time was playing nothing but lightening fast shouty punk covers of Elvis songs!
Agreed. But that isn't really doing "arrangements, it's one gimmicky idea done over and over. Hell, you can do reggae versions of Sinatra songs or bossa nova versions of punk songs and it wouldn't even take any rehearsing. How about calypso renditions of country songs? It may be funny for about 16 measures but that's about it. it's hardly clever.
12. Don't do it. I can't believe you can even find headless tuning strings anymore.
13. Another pretty cool one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaKRYdGoNZI
14. Two completely revamped versions of Nirvana song that work (for me, perhaps not others) and for different reasons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oKVWHaMef4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6IJGRm54D4
15. I'm of the belief that if you're going to do an original arrangement, do a completely different take. Use the composition as the vehicle and take it to a new place. But if it's meant to be cover that people want to hear, then give them an accurate reproduction of the version they know. A "neither here nor there" representation never really works since it just sounds like a bad cover. Having said that, I posted a couple of videos I found on Youtube where guys were doing (what I thought was) interesting, unusual takes on a couple of standard songs and the responses from the BassChat crowd was vehement hatred. So, be forewarned.
16. Repulsive, ruined, a mess, really bad, inappropriate, awful, struggles to keep time, not overly inventive. Got it. I still like it. Amazing how people can hear things differently.
17. I'm not sure what the guitarist not being willing to learn the songs correctly has to do with the audition, but I suspect the outcome either way can't be good. And when someone plays badly, it doesn't just make that person look bad. The whole band looks bad. People may not know where the mess-ups are coming from, but believe me, they can tell that it doesn't sound right.
18. Open strings take you out of the "position" that works throughout the neck. I'd recommend practicing all the scales using open notes. Also, simple walking bass lines in the keys of F, Bb, and C so a 3rd will be an open string.
19. Two classic songs arranged in a totally bizarre manner. The first is an odd time signature version of "Eight days a week" with some slick bass. The second is a bossa nova version of "The Trooper" which is both clever and funny. It's completely insane but I believe shows a lot of skill and creativity. In both cases, it's one guy playing all the parts. Whattaya think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwaZI8cwvnc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJkYGNiBkso
20. Not the original but some may find this helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0By15Styjw
21. Nominal difference, though the Mexi sounds a little more shallow to me. I'd like to hear a Squier CV in there. I think it'd beat the Mexi.
22.
Some nice playing, vocals really ruined it for me though!
Same here.
23. Perusing YouTube again and came across these two vids. Good stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmExtL-UOKM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXx-he7DI_Y
24. Sounds like standard pentatonic licks. Probably several licks stuck together and pro tooled. I have to say, I never got what was so great about Price. There are thousands of multi instrumentalists. He's best at guitar and it's mostly ripped off Hendrix . Don't love his songs or his singing. But he sure knows how to sell it.
25. Nice. But sounds like thousand of other jams played in the 70's/80's.
