1. peanuts and monkeys! i guess it depends on your personal preference - i've played cheaper basses and these days alot of budget basses are of a reasonable quality but to me at least there is a difference - I've had high end basses and admittedly all of mine these days are kinda 'midrange' but as you get to be a more experienced player you know more what you want from an instrument and for most (funds permitting) that means spending a bit. Its the same with many things - a few years ago I thought i'd take up mountain biking as a hobby and to start with bought myself a cheapo Raliegh from Halfords, but after a while I upgraded to a much nicer, more specialist bike. Same thing really. I am a bit of a brand snob though whether its basses or bikes or whatever! I also think that in certain professional situations you'll not be taken as seriously if you turn up with cheap and cheerful gear, regardless of what you can do with it. Having said that after giving my beaten up old MIM Jazz a set up etc recently my other basses haven't been touched! peace c
2.
DiMarzio Model J. G.
ah yep! they're the ones - i looked on dimarzio site the other day but clearly didn't have my eyeballs switched on! c
3. Just lately I've been getting back into Jazz Bass mode and using my trusty old MIM relic for most things. I have noticed however that, particularly in a full band scenario, the E string comes out a lot louder than the other strings. I've done what i can with the pickups by lowering them on the E side and also raised the action of the E string a little but its still noticable. Any thoughts on this? I'm guessing pole pieces on stock Jazz pups aren't adjustable in anyway - I do remember some replacement pups you used to be able to get that had allen key type adjustable pole pieces but can't seem to find anything about them - dimarzios/duncans were they? not that i have any money for new pups at the mo really :-( peace c
4. ...you're quite excited about the first rehearsal for a new project with existing band members, you put in alot of time learning the songs to get them right and then everyone else has only kinda half learnt the stuff!! aaaargh! i think its because being widdly, widdly guitarists they assumed this particular material would be easy and just skimmed over it rather than knuckling down and learning it properly. bah. lousy amateurs!! c
5. for some reason i'm watching MTV Dance Classics (!) but they just played this: forgot about this song really, but nice groovy little bassline i thought (and nice bint singing..!) how bored am i? oh well!! c
6. just back from the Colchester clinic - pretty good to see/hear him up close, though as others have said sound wasn't all that, especially from the hydrive combo he used for a bit - seemed to be breaking up a little?! Always prefered his old Kubickis over the Urge basses but did like the gold sparkly paint!! as an aside, was my first visit to the bass merchant - lots of nice stuff in there - think i may need a Spector now! D'oh! Will have to pay another visit when i've got some funds!!! peace c
7.
Not being nasty, but i would rather see JPJ with players who were good as him, this man really could have obtained better musicians.
i'd agree on Josh Homme, but Grohl is a very good rock drummer. This project has been rumoured for some time now though so guess time will tell if its for real or not. peace c
8. i plan to get along to the Colchester one - they've also got Marco Mendoza and TM Stevens coming up - i did email em for more info but as seems to be par for the course these days, no reply!!! peace c
9. i always quite liked these and the unusual headstock etc. Seem to remember Neil Murray used them quite alot at one stage.... peace c
10.
Hes a very interesting character.. Tis great when he wheres the goat horn hat..Does he/has he exclusively played Carl Thompson basses always??
with Sausage at least he used 70s Fender Jazz basses and on his 5 gallons of diesel DVD hes giving it some on a Rickenbacker of all things...and people reckon you can't slap 'em! pah!!! sometimes a bit of upright too and don't forget that weird whamola one string thing!!! but in the main its CT basses c
11. ANYTHING by Percy Jones +1 on Rubber Shirt and this guy is pretty good: peace c
12.
Limp Bizkit... great musicians, awful band. All the instrumentalists are fantastic, but it's ruined with stupid, juvenile vocals and imagery. Props to Sam though, very good player.
agreed. c
13. youtube seems weird for what copyrighted stuff it decides to take down. For instance I had a video of me playing along with Maiden's Phantom of the Opera on there which got pulled 'by the copyright owner'. Fair enough of course, BUT how come theres still hundreds of other peoples videos of exactly the same thing on there untouched? And also some of my other videos are of my band playing Maiden songs which again have remained untouched! Not sure about myspace - one thing that annoyed me recently was that a local covers band had the original versions of some songs on there (ie: the actual artist recorded album tracks) but were passing them off as their versions!! bit naughty that i thought!! not wanting to really get involved with the whole Faithless issue but on a side note, I frequent alot of art related forums and quite often you get real amateurs on there posting their work which is, no matter which way you look at it, absolutely terrible, but still you get the cliquey forum members saying 'wow! thats great' and stuff, when clearly it isn't! that kinda makes a mockery of the whole constructive criticism thing if they just say any old rubbish is good just to be polite. and for what its worth he's my feeble attempt from a couple of years back! peace c
14. i think theres someone here on BC affiliated with The Bass Merchant who could tell us more but anyhoo, just picked up a local free gig guide mag and it seems they're hosting some cool bass workshops at their Colchester store in the near future.... Stu Hamm - 12th August TM Stevens/Marco Mendoza - 24th Sept (plus evening gig) don't know anymore than that, but sounds good to me!!! I'll be there! peace c
15. yeah i remember him from some old magazine. I think he was from round here (Norwich) and played with another local muso Colin Pincott (session guitarist and member of Mammoth) and I saw them live together at some music show in London yonks ago. not that thats much help! c
16. if its tapping with a Mr Big tone you want then you need a Yamaha Attitude bass!! c
17. Marillion - Script for a Jesters Tear - I used to listen to this loads when it was first out, recently ripped it for me ipod and forget how good it is - pretty dark really - the web, chelsea monday, forgotten sons etc (aside from the slightly cheesy 'garden party'), some quality lyrics from Mr Dick and some fine bass work from Trewavas. Excellent album artwork too (at least back in the day on a big old 12" vinyl sleeve!! Class. peace c
18.
Interesting that. Cause I always thought that the guy they paraded at the O2 to announce the gig wasn't Jacko. He looked too big, solid, vital, energetic and most of all had too deep a voice. (and his hands were too builder like too!)
i'd agree that sometimes a stand in jacko was used. I noticed this ages ago before he died - when you see some footage/pictures of him he does have big hands like bunches of bananas and other times he has much more slender hands as you would expect given his general stature. although some of the drugs etc could cause bloating maybe? who knows!!? peace c
19. bah. thought that was my party trick!! peace c
20. damn it! ALWAYS when i've got no money!! aaaargh! c
