Has he come clean about which bass it is yet?
I think Barrie's with it rather than it being here as I believe he is over in the States and picking up whilst there although I could be wrong!! PS Its your fault I have just bought a P bass Not sure it will be any match for your AC however. Flankers Alleva is absolutely stunning in the flesh - very classy!! Steve
2.
Steve I played this bass last week. I thought it had a nice fat sound! Im sure you'll like it. Hope you're well, Steve
Thanks Steve - I like the colour :-)
3. To Birmingham Richard. I will give you first option if I ever sell it :-)
4.
I'm toying with a second setup that I can use in the house for noodling and having portability for those smaller gigs and practices. I'm not looking for a practice amp but a setup that can keep up with quieter bands. Think coffeeshop gigs, acoustic gigs and gigs where I would be going out through the PA and the speaker is there for monitoring. After hearing some of those Class D amps, I'm not convinced I like them enough as what I already have, but do appreciate the portability and lightweight nature of them so they will do as a second amp. Ampwise I'm sorted, I'm probably leaning to a Genz Benz Shuttle but am looking for a decent 1x12 that I can leave in the car for those last minute calls etc! Any suggestions? I know I can take a 2x10 (that I already have) but I want something uber portable and something which is going to provide me a decent amount of volume... hence the 1x12 thought...
Bergantino.
5.
Even Mr Shuker seemed to wet himself at the excitement!
Haha classic. Well Spotted :-) Nice bass btw - congrats!! Steve
6. I just read that and thought it was very useful so thanks Alun!
7.
Following on from my previous analogy: You meet the partner of your dreams and stay with them from teens to old age. You are happy as Larry and never look at anyone else. Others settle with their partner but look at others. However, they don't have the guts to stray. Then there are those that can't help but look and can't remain faithful. They want to sh@g as many other people as possible. Some of these will only go for really attractive people, while some will go for anything that moves. The sexual techniques they employ are the same, but they might find that some of the partners are more adventurous, and therefore more enjoyable. After playing the field, most of these people usually end up back with their partners. And so to basses: you meet the love of your life and stay faithful: it feels comfortable and you feel no need to use anything else. You love your favourite bass but you feel the urge to look at others. I wonder how that would play and sound? You forget about your regular bass, play the field, and you try anything you can get your hands on, cheap or expensive, just to see if the experience is different. It usually is initially, but you soon tire of it and long for your favourite bass again. You end up going back to your long term one. We've all done it.
+1 And generally the more you pay for a hooker.......
8.
You're not very good at interpreting subtle hints you lot The answer is yes
Fantastic!! and congratulations - I think you will love it Steve
9. Did anyone on here buy Tommix's LG5? He said it's heading across the pond to the UK!! Looks like a real beauty as well. Steve
10. You may get more by selling it through vintage and rare or similar who have a shop in Bath which isn't far from you. Although it isn't original the neck alone could be worth a lot of money so I would consider having its value appraised. Although V&R take commission from any sale they have contacts and customers etc who are willing to pay more than the average punter on here. A refin would approximately half the value in collectors eyes as a general principle. Steve
11. Thats a great review Pete - Must get to see you soon!!! Steve
12.
Well no Birdy, because an out board preamp will just do what my amp does. thats all a preamp does... i will just have more confusing amp EQ.. It will be done by a pro i know, so will be very neat..
Fair enough but in the eyes of a 'collector' very neat is not a good as unspoilt As you say it is one of a 100 so it will be collectable - I used to own the bass so know how good it sounds as is!!!
13. I don't know if I would do it personally. That bass is/will be pretty collectable and broken solder joints will possibly devalue it in the future. Could you not get the sound out of an outboard preamp perhaps? That would be my preferred solution but I understand if you go down the route you are planning. Steve
14. All the best Al - I am sure you will nail it!!
15. Just wondering.... What did you type into google or youtube to find this?!!?!
16.
It's looking good - the paint is beginning to discolour in that nitro way. The camera doesn't really catch the true colour as the flash was needed because it had long since gone dark! But yeah, it defo looks cool. The fingerboard is nice too - again, as has been stated, I don't know whether it is worth the premium but it did feel very nice to play on. We didn't test the two ACs side by side but from what I remember, this one does sound significantly different - as has been stated, this white one is a lot darker in tone... but having said that, it would slap out nice with a bit of top on the pre. I want one. It was interesting plugging in the GBs after the AC. Like chalk and cheese!
Without derailing the thread your three GB's were all noticeably different in look, tone and feel !
17.
An absolutely beautiful bass and some great shots - I was very tempted by an oly white LG4 on TB around a month ago and now think I should have gone for it (oly and tort has a beguiling effect!) Is it a nitro finish on this bass - it appears to be (but of course, it's not easy to tell)? I've been extremely impressed with Alleva so far - I'm probably getting towards the end of the honeymoon period but really still finding more in the bass. I've not had a chance to compare my Alleva with others, but I'd say it has a dark sound - very full in the lower mids but bright and crisp in the upper mids and highs. Lower mids are much more present than with a '76 Jazz (maple board with a very heavy ash body). I'd concur on the pre - it's very usable and relatively subtle - that said, I use the bass in passive most of the time. It has such a great tone that I just tend to roll off the neck pick up a little and run flat through a db750 (strings are new so I may play around a little more as the brightness diminishes)
Yes Loz the finish on this one is nitro and its starting to age wonderfully. I agree with your comments on the tone above and can only imagine how great yours sounds through a DB750. I run mine through an EBS preamp and love the sounds that are available. Of course I now really want a 4 string version which will be difficult to source and fund :-) I am over the honeymoon period with my green one and I still love it loads. I bought and sold so many basses that it's great to have finally found one or two that suit me. I loved my Sadowskies and Celinders but these AC's just work better for what I want to sound like.
18.
Very nice Steve, you finding much difference in tone between the two?
I think Russ has nailed it in his post really, subtle differences more than anything. I gigged with the white one on saturday and the drummer commented that he could hear the bass a lot better which is encouraging. To put it in context I sold a 65 Jazz and with the money bought the Green bass and don't regret it for a second. These LG5 basses are pre CBS fenders with a B string!!! Steve
19. Here are a few pics courtesy of Russ's camera.
20. The new one I have acquired has the Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and it is definately a darker sounding bass than the one with the Indian Rosewood board although I agree that $1500 is probably wayyyy to much. The only problem now is I want a 4 string Jazz and Flankers P Bass. GAS where will it end. Steve
21. I have another one :-) Pics to follow when EBS has worked his camera magic later!! Steve
22. Nice! Can we see a pic of the headstock? Thanks Steve
23. At last I am happy with what I have which is an Alleva Coppolo LG5 into an EBS classic preamp into a Berg IP112 stack. It's a nice feeling to be Gasless and I don't think it gets any better for what I am doing!!
